Oh hey Nick I didn't see you there.

Anyone else wish Nick had more screen time? I got be honest at one point in the game I forgot he was even there until the camera zoomed out and I saw him sleeping haha.

  • Yeah. But he's still alive which is good enough for me!

lol same but that's what usually happens with determinant characters (meaning they're either alive or dead). Usually these characters don't get much more screen time. Alvin was gone pretty much the whole time until the end if he was still alive and we barely saw Nick unless we saw him in the background.
I do wish they'd get more screen time and more chances to do things (like Carley/Doug or Ben in S1) but it doesn't seem like it now.

Basically the only thing he did in this episode was agree with Rebecca's plan and yell at Kenny lol. Basically Ben's role in Ep5. Kenny even treated him like Ben

    And there was that funny

Clem: "at least beds are better than this floor"

    "..."

    Nick: "They're not."
  • I wish he'd had more of an impact as well. He's cool.
  • Yeah every time he said something I thought "oh right, Nicks here, hey Nick!" because it was that rare haha

  • He had way more screen time than Carlos or Sarita, I don't get whats the deal, just hope that he made it out of the horde alive and well and isn't just dead in ep4.
  • Alvin died in episode 2 for me but I have read about him on the forums. Yeah I agree I feel as though I didn't save him because I kept forgetting he was there haha. However it's good to know he is still there even if he isn't talking much.
  • Yeah, his lack of dialogue was pretty irritating.
  • To be fair he had a huge role in the episode 2. Still, I'm pretty bummed that all he really did in this episode was talk about Luke.

He's probably going to die in episode 4 so I'm hoping, what with the cast cut down again, we'll get a little bit more from him before he does. I hope he makes it out of the horde alive and isn't just shoved on a bus out of the game, that would be immensely disappointing.
  • Totally agree with this, Nick had some fairly great moments in this episode. His chat with Clem by the beds, his one line to Bonnie, arguing with Kenny again, fanboying over Luke's idea and then that epic line at the end where Luke tells Nick that if Clem can do this, so can he.

meanwhile Sarita did.. nothing, and everything she said was about Kenny in some way.

  • Part of me cheered every time he said something, because holy fuck it was rare.

I'm kinda bummed about this. He has potential, but being determinant, we all know he won't do a lot (he could do something to redeem himself in the eyes of some players, though. Kind of like what happens if you save Ben and he yells at Kenny). Him instantly agreeing with Luke was kind of funny though (and sad, in a way).

Oh, I have a question, does Luke comment on Nick not being there if you let him die?
  • I want to know that too.

No, it was my first save file, Nick pissed me off so I let him die and in ep3 its not brought up by Luke but its not a major issue.

  • Come to think of it, I don't recall Luke acknowledging Nick's disappearance. I could be wrong, but I really am struggling to remember a reference to Nick outside of Regi bringing him up.

  • There is an off screen time after Carver beats Kenny, at that point they probably told him.

  • That's kinda sad, considering how Nick spends the entirety of episode 3 either talking about how Luke will save them or taking his side when discussing the escape plan.

Kind of obvious there's a lack of balance in that friendship.

Well I'll play Devil's Advocate for fun. The reason I believe Nick was put on the back-burner was because TT Seemed to really want to develop Kenny, Carver, Sarah, Bonnie, and Troy. As well they also wanted to introduce the new characters. Not saying it's right though more than likely they didn't have a lot of the cabin group/400 days character time, because they wanted to develop other characters more.

Though I am grateful Nick didn't die. It will be very cool if he lives till episode 5 and even the season if you saved him or he saves someone else, that wiill survive the entire season.
  • Just like Prince Lawrance's appearance on TWAU Ep 3 =/
  • I agree. It's so sad, because Nick admires Luke more than anyone else and immediately takes his side while Luke is just... "Oh, yeah, that guy Nick. Hm. Moving on..."

The fact that he doesn't even mention Nick says a lot. Specially with them being friends since before the apocalypse. You'd expect he'd have some sort of reaction.

Yeah, I mean I get that its important to channel more resources into characters that are guaranteed a place in our stories though. The fact that they didn't just kill Nick off this episode fascinates me and makes me pretty proud, as that was what I predicted.
  • I have a feeling this may be an issue with acknowledging certain determinant outcomes. Notice how Nick doesn't get a reaction shot when Reggie brings up Pete. That made absolutely no sense. I'm guessing that's because Nick is dead at this point for some players. Either that or it was a time issue (and the less said about that the better).

  • As much as I hated Mass Effect 3, Bioware did a hell of a job with the determinant characters

Okay this is just nonsense. Luke was worried sick about Nick when he was missing in episode 2. First going out to look for him then after he can't find him, he begs Clem to take him to Nick and he rescues him. Now in episode 3 Luke was on foot for days without sleep, food or water to rescue the group and he doesn't even ask "where's Nick?" I find that hard to believe especially the look on Luke's face in episode 2 when he opened the shed and thought Nick was dead for a second. I feel like that's Telltale's fault for failing to recognize a determinant character's effect on characters. Come to think of it, no one mentions Nick in the episode, ever. So blame Telltale not Luke.

  • That actually bothered me a lot too? The fact the reactions were from Clementine and Rebecca and not Nick made no sense to me.

IMO the episode had a lot of plot holes (I expected George to be elaborated on, for example). This one makes for some unfortunate implications, though.

  • The only thing he says to Nick in episode 3 is when they're about to go through the herd and Nick expresses his hesitation and Luke says something like, "Are you kidding me? If Clementine can do it then so can you."

    So that was kinda. Hm.

  • Haha, take my like for that funny title.

Yeah, I was bummed that he didn't get more screen time. Like others have mentioned, I think this was so TTG could develop some of the other characters, especially the new ones. I also think it was a very easy way for them to say "Hey look! A determinant character stuck around for more than one episode!"

Alvin didn't have much screen time either, but his death scene was definitely memorable. I have a feeling they'll do the same with Nick, so they probably wanted to save it for another episode. Unfortunately, I don't see him playing a HUGE role in E4 (or E5 if he survives), but I'm sure his last scene will be a good one.

I'm curious, if Nick dies in E2, does Luke say anything about him in E3? Or I guess since he was following them, he probably heard or figured out that Nick had died?
  • I actually think that perhaps Nick was meant to die in this episode, but maybe Telltale noticed how he'd grown to be a pretty popular character, so they put him on the backburner for episode 3 and kept him alive to focus on other characters, and maybe they'll go back to him in episode 4? I'm hoping?
  • It unfortunately implies what I said above. That their friendship is unbalanced.

With that kind of logic then that must mean that Nick got over Pete's death in one day and even the mention of his name doesn't bother Nick one bit. That must mean that Nick never truly cared about Pete then. If anything, Nick has that "keep movin' on" attitude. So much for Nick not being "built like that." Also what happened to him being suicidal? I thought he was supposed to be a depressed, suicidal, not able to move on from his loved one's death. Now he's relatively cheerful, non-suicidal, and has already seemed to have moved on from the death of his loved ones as shown not being affected at the slightest by the group talking about Pete's death.

  • You know what else I noticed. When the group spent their first night in the Hardware store, everyone stayed up talking or devising plans but Nick was all like "K bye" and just went straight to the beds. Wat?

Sooooo we ARE pretty much accepting that characters with determinte deaths should just have little screen time? 'Kay, TTG your fans have spoken: they don't care about quality.
  • Eh, I wouldn't call him "cheery", that's pushing it, but his demeanor confused me. Telltale was damn lazy with continuity there. I was really annoyed that he didn't react to Reggie mentioning Pete.

I feel like there was a lack of communication between writers here.

  • Since Nick is one of my favorite characters (not only this season but overall - I really relate to him in some regards), it pained me that he had hardly any screentime this episode. Like... why bother to make a character determinant if they're not going to show up much either way?
  • That means that we can attribute Luke not noticing Nick not being there at all to a lack of communication between the writers.
