Kenny's heroism

Kenny has always been known around here as a very flawed man. I've seen my fair share of people who love Kenny (myself included in that category) and the other category of people who hate Kenny. Most of the time when I heard people's reasons of not liking Kenny they're normally that he takes his word as gold and he does irrational things to protect people. Granted, I always found some of these true to some extent but flawed characters are oftentimes my favourite characters. Another prime example? Lee Everett. My favourite Walking Dead character. No matter how you play Lee in the first Season he will always have that flaw of the horrible thing he done in his past.

Anyway, this about Kenny. And I thought this would be a good time to say it... Kenny is a pretty damn good guy. Why? He took the wrap for Clementine in regards to the talkie and where did that lead him? With a permanently damaged eye. And how did Kenny take it? Like a boss.

Basically, I saw great character development in Kenny in this episode. Season-One Kenny would not have been this ok with losing an eye, he'd snap like hell. But I'll admit, I don't think he would take the wrap for the radio unless it was either Clem or Sarita who had it. And when he killed Carver, that was the only time where I didn't say "What the hell Kenny!?" For his action. Granted if I was given the choice I would not kill Carver. But there's no point in saying the obvious here, Carver was a horrible person. Whether he deserved what he got from this or not I'll leave it up to you.

Generally I was wondering if anyone sees Kenny in a new light now? Or, if you're someone who didn't like him before what do you think of him now? I felt like he finally had some proper heroism shown in some scenes. Even reminding me of Lee, sacrificing himself to make sure Clementine stays safe. And I think this is probably the first episode since the first episode in Season One that I sided with him. Bit weird too since he's one of my favourite TWD characters. Plus, I almost dropped a tear when he got up and Clem hugged him.

  • For some reason, Kenny reminded me a bit of Rick in this episode, one scene in particular.

Rick be biting necks = Kenny be smashing faces
  • i knew kenny was amazing before this episode but after this episode, the epicness and badassery of him has ascended to the next level and is almost as badass as what we would call the "Lee" level

Kenny hater since Hershel's Barn reporting in! I love Kenny now... I don't know, this feels weird. But he stood up for Clem and that's what matters to me now. So I'm a convert... baptized in the church of Kenny now.

That's exactly what I was thinking, you just basically summed up my entire post in one sentence though. xD

  • I always liked him, though I acknowledge that he's done some pretty horrible things. Season 1 showed us that Kenny can indeed be a hero, and while he's a bit of an asshole with his fair share of flaws Season 2 continues to show us that he's not a bad person. He lost his damn eye for a plan he didn't even want to go through with, but he isn't blaming anyone and he's taking it pretty well, considering what happened.

Hell, he even seems to have found some common ground with Luke and Nick. Maybe losing his eye will allow him to see things from a different point of view.
  • Kenny is my favourite character as of S02. He's unhinged from the trauma of his past and he butts heads with a lot of people, as he always did, but he is loyal and he protects Clementine as a surrogate father. He always looked out for his family in the first season, but Clementine is his family now and he'll do anything he can for her. I believe that. Hell, I trust him more than anybody else in the group and I want Clem to as well. Also, he's one tough son of a bitch.
But if I know Telltale, they're going to use this to tear my heart out and laugh as they make snow angels in our money.

In the church of Kenny the "Confirmed for Season 2" gif is pretty much the entire bible.

Yeah I had the feeling that even the strongest of Kenny-haters would have to at least go; "Oh.. okay, well that's something heavily redeems his character."

For some reason, I feel like the reason he was treating Nick the way he was is because he was just trying to redeem himself for treating Ben the way he did. And him and Luke's interactions remind a bit of Lee if you did a playthrough where you disagree with Kenny a lot. And just like season 1, I think Lee and Kenny will come out of this season good friends.

Oh, and I had to point this out from your post:

"Maybe losing his eye will allow him to see things from a different point of view"

    Literally. *budum tsss*

He seems different now. In a good way and a bad way. He has kind of taken a Lee role in taking care of Clem, but he maintains his anger, especially after the death of his family. However I am liking him way more then I did in Season One mostly because he hated my Lee's guts... I have to admit... I was on Lilly's side but when I saw Kenny alive I was SOOOO happy. It just felt so awesome I got chills. I guess we see him in a different viewpoint because Lee's not there and he tries to be like him to protect Clementine. So yeah I see him in a different light, and he is quite the hero now :).

  • This episode actually made me like Kenny a lot more.

  • I thought he and Nick were genuinely having a moment after the whole eye thing. It really did seem like Kenny's attitude changed for the better after that.

And as for that last sentence, that pun was completely intentional. I have no regrets.

  • It certainly affected my brain. I've had the urge to make eye puns ever since I finished the episode.

  • Actually I'm not sure. I see him in a different light definitely, but I don't know if I like him any more or less - it would be hard for me to like him much more though, since he's one of my favorites. Seeing as Kenny and I were bros in season 1, I tried my best to trust him this episode - even if it meant half the time I was screaming "Kenny, what the fuck!?" at the screen before sighing and reluctantly doing what he asked of me anyway. I figure I need to put my trust in /someone/ - and it was gonna be Luke, but now it looks like he's a goner. ):

I think... he's different now, for sure, and I see him as a guy capable of a lot more than he used to be. He's also maybe not the best for Clem - but he's all she's got now. I think if I could I might pick Luke over him, but it's too late for that now. And at least Kenny does seem to care about Clementine - he protected her, and I definitely won't forget that.
  • I never really liked Kenny to much. Dunno why, although I did gain some respect for him after risking his life to save Ben at the end of S1. That respect did fade a little in Episode 2, where the months between had obviously damaged him, and I didn't like the way he seemed to almost 'regret' his decision to save Ben.

This episode, however, made me respect him quite a bit more. He actually seems to have grown as a character, I felt almost safer around him and I was shocked when he took the blame for the radio. He is still an idiot in many ways, but for the first time I got the feeling that he was actually trying to do the right thing, not just for himself but everyone.

I always liked Kenny. Even when he did things i didn't agree with in Season 1. I knew he had his family's interest at heart and didn't hold it against him too much. I still trusted him and respected his opinions whether they were right or wrong. Yes, Kenny is a flawed man as you said, He certainly made mistakes but he overcame them and the other difficulties he faced and in the end redeemed himself with Ben, with Clem etc.

I think most people who thought he was selfish and hated you if you didn't agree with him in Season 1, are going to change their minds after this episode.

In Season 1 he did what he thought was right for his family. In Season 2 you the player are his family, Clementine and Sarita and to a lesser extent the rest of the group i guess. It is nice that we get to see now how Kenny thought and understand why he did the things he did in Season 1. We got this more personal relationship with him now, the same kind Lee had with Clementine in S1.
  • Guys this is The Walking Dead! Don't let the writers know you like Kenny! He'll get bit saving Clem, he'll get the fever and start calling her Duck, and it'll all be super sad.

You're right, we need to pretend we hate him in order to keep him alive. Back in the hate train!

  • My feelings about Kenny have roughly stayed the same: Mixed. Basically I like him, but he gets too hot-blooded for his own good sometimes. Also, to be honest, his racist microaggressions (first the urban thing, now the comment about Reggie's name) put me off a little. But I don't doubt that deep down he's a good guy and he wants to help and protect Clem as good as he can. And he's really gotten better at taking responsibility for his fuck-ups!
  • That scene where he got up as Luke was talking about leaving him behind… that was one of my favourite walking dead scenes of all time. He's just so beaten and I felt sorry for him when Luke talked about just abandoning him, but then he just gets up and I thought, "There's the Kenny I know!"

It really was a true testament to the survival of human spirit despite hardships.

I was a bit cautious of Kenny at the beginning of Season 2 because his persona had slightly changed and how his and Clem's relationship possibly dying off/changing without Lee there but episode 3 has totally altered that opinion for me. Though Kenny can be rash he showed that he'll really stick his neck out on the line for Clem, taking that beating for her is one of the most heroic things he's ever done in the game and I've really warmed up to his character like I did with Lee in season 1. He can be a twat at times but I'm really liking his episode 3 character development, I really liked how he got shit done and just finished Carver off without messing around too. After his actions from that episode he's definitely in my good books again and is one of my favourite characters. If I had to chose between him and Luke I'd really struggle.
  • I occasionally butted heads with Kenny in S1 but overall I did think he was a good man. I really think he's changed for the better in S2. Taking the blame for the radio? That's a page from Lee's book right there.

And not even being angry or upset about the loss of his eye is something that I never expected Kenny would be like. Was a great change of character compared to what he used to be, like you said he reminded me of what Lee would do.

  • One of the reasons why I love Kenny is because he's so multifaceted. The courage and determination he showed in this episode made me love him even more.
  • And a bit of Carl (Comic book Carl). That eyepatch.
