Season 2 just way too streamlined

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
Do anyone feel the same way that season 2 is a lot more linear and streamlined compared to season 1? Episode three was such a great opportunity for exploration and huge hub, but the chance just got wasted. As I much as I love the series, it's really disappointing.

Yeah I feel the same way. Carter's compound was pretty underwhelming to say the least. Not only did we barely get to explore the place, but it looked like a total of 5 guards and maybe 10 other people lived there. Where the fuck was everybody? It really didn't help matters that we barely got to interact with any of those people either.

....Despite the fact that there were tons of opportunities for hubs to be implemented, there was not even 1 substantial hub in the whole episode. But hey at least we got a bunch of dumb QTE's right?
  • QTE FTW lol

The lack of exploration or interaction really killed the immersion for me. Now it basically becomes bunch of interactive cutscenes, with no impacts of what I said and what I did.

  • I still love the game, but I feel like it's getting a bit -too- linear. This episode was rather extreme in that regard, more so than the first two of the season.
  • I agree

So true. Everyone hated JP, I think because this has walking dead in the title and everyone loved s1 they won't fuss about how liner and like Jp its become.
  • I can agree that it has become more linear. But I still enjoyed the episode a lot, due to the many great moments during the playthough.
  • I wasn't disappointed with the episode. It stiil could have been better though.I think we'll have more exploration in episode 4

Heavily agreed, Episode 3 especially takes the cake for this now. I only really recall two occasions you get to walk around. And that's just not right when it's supposed to be an adventure game.

Sadly I don't think Telltale will ever listen for our plead for hubs. Especially now being three episodes in. Season Two has been really, really enjoyable but I really do feel like I'm more watching than playing this time around. Especially after this episode, I felt like Kenny even had more dialogue than Clementine. Though, that might just be because he's a very loud man. Plus it was up to me what her dialogue was gonna be and I do occasionally stay silent. Felt like as Clementine, I wasn't able to get too involved in goin on's when everyone was talking by the fire. Why they would they go this far with lack of hubs though? I have no idea really, guess they just wanted to have more cinematic style for their games. But it hurts the enjoyment of actually feeling like you're playing a video game.
  • I very much enjoy season two but I do miss being able to walk around, looking at various stuff and things like we could with Lee. But the thing I really miss is being able to talk more with the characters. We're three episodes into the season now and I still don't feel that I really know the people Clem are with, which is a shame. I thought we would finally get the opportunity when we got to walk around the yard in episode 3, but not quite.

It's still a very enjoyable season and I'm definitely hooked on it, but I do miss those things from season 1.
  • Yeah, ever since the finale of season 1, Telltale's games changed very much. I miss the good old days like back in Sam and Max where you can anywhere you want, talk with anyone you want and you don't feel rushed at all, but now things have changed. What is Telltale's excuse of not having a hub here? This was the perfect chance to explore Carver's camp and talk with the 400 Days characters and maybe bond with them like Clem and Becca getting along depending on choices and etc. Considering that we have two more episodes left, I think we can kiss our chances of having hubs goodbye.

  • Agree. It's now more like TV series right now, but still I play this game for the story and I really like it.

I think it just had to do with No Time Left receiving heavy acclaim. Still don't think this is the right direction to go. But I really do agree, I think we have to accept the fact we're not really playing adventure games anymore. The 400 Days characters who didn't go with Tavia would've been a great moment to have a mini-hub where you can have some optional dialogue and if none of them were there, so be it.

I really hope they go back to the drawing board and take notes from all their previous games (like you said Sam & Max being a primary example) I don't even see them being that costly or time consuming to even do. Granted some of their previous games had occasionally the tricky puzzle but they could still do it the streamline way the first Season was.

  • What do you mean badly written? It had a great story just like the other two,but it didn't have many point'n click elements or exploration

  • It was definitely badly written specially carver
  • exactly. they made him crazy, a total psycho, instead of explorind his character and his motives, hearing his side of the story

  • Hey,no need to be a jerk.I'm no film director but that episode was great in my opinion. It wasn't the best, that's for sure. But the character development and story was something well written. The only thing it lacked was exploration and puzzle elements
  • They've stated shorter and more streamlined is their current design model.

I feel like S2 could have been more if these three issues were addressed.

I was surprised after all the build up how fast Carver was taken care of and I do feel like my choices had less impact, it's a bummer.
  • i agree to streamlined, to little options and free roaming...
