What year is the Walking Dead on?

So i havent read the comics so if the answers is there please tell me but since the comics were released in 2003 im gonna assume that is the year in the comics too. But my question is what year is on The Game and the T.V show cause if it is the same than the comics Clementine must be 19 by now if she is stil, alive .They grow so fast :(

  • Yes the game follows the comic book so when Lee met Clementine it was 2003 but 2 years has passed so its 2005 but if u do the math 2005-11= 1994 so clem by 2014 would be 20.
  • The comics started in 2003 so that's when the apocolypse started in the story. I believe it is now 3 years into it in the comics, making it 2006. The game follows the comic continuity and it is about 2 and 1/2 years in, making it 2005. The show is didferent. Since the show started in 2010, the apocolypse started in 2010 and I think it's two years in now, making it 2012. This is because Glenn mentions the video game portal, which came out in 2009.
  • The comic book just did a 2 year leap so its 2007-2008 now.

Me and Clem are the same age, I feel honored :)

edit: Wow the same sentence I reveal my age in I also write "me and Clem" instead of "Clem and I". I always knew I was an idiot but that was the fucking dumbest.

I like to think of The Walking Dead being a timeless story, like it happens when it happens, at any time in the future. (I know it's a fictional story obviously, but I think the writers may have intended for it to be for any time period.)

EDIT: I mean this in a respectful way, but can the person who thumbed me down prove me wrong?
  • That would explain some of the clothing (no offense to the characters) and the fact that some of the technology is quite old.

  • You mean theoretically if Clem were to be alive and real, born in 1994?

Robert Kirkman has been very ambiguous about when The Walking Dead takes place so there is no way of knowing what year TWD takes place in
  • edited May 2014
Wow I never knew it was set in 2003.My mind is officially blown.
  • Old fat TV's where still in use until 2004 in some countries even in some areas of US

  • I just look at it like present day 2014 (As I have stated in other threads)

Kirkman has said the year the events of the canon began is unclear ("Could be 2003, could be 2009, who knows?"), but as of Issue 127, it's roughly 3 and a half years in to the apocalypse. In the game, it's roughly 870 days in. In the TV show, it's not clear, since it follows a different timeline.

Your safest guess is the game and comics are set in the early 2000s, possibly even late 90s. The show is far more modern.

On The Walking Dead Wiki it's said that episode 3 ends up during day 854 since the outbreak started so...2 years and (probably) 4 months passed since the beginning of outbreak. I mean, at least in the game. :) In the comics timeline is longer. For what I know 4-6 years has passed in the comics but I'm not exactly sure because I just read Volume 16.
  • Thats Cool.

  • Like you said earlier we've probably 2005 in the game. :) In the comics it could be even year 2009-2010.

Haha thanks. I don't mind being thumbed down, I just wish if people are going to thumb down something that makes since, they explain why. Like for instance, if I put "Insert character name suxz!11!" I will expect to be thumbed down without a response, but I just don't see how someone could prove me right or wrong on this, but if someone could, I would be happy to respond to them. But oh well, I don't care if they do now ha.

    P.S. Nice drawing BTW

  • well since the game follows the comics this is how it goes

    the outbreak started in 2003

so season 1 takes place in 2003

season 2 takes place 2 years after season 1 so it is currently 2005
  • Word me too lol

I still have a TV like that!

The licence plate in All That Remains has a 2005 sticker on it i.imgur.com/p0hXSHf.jpg and it looks like it's been there a while, it's unclear what the exact year is but it looks like it could be from the year 2005 onwards.

Anyway comics are canon for Telltale Games so the outbreak started in the same time both in comics and in the game. They can't argue with that, no one can. Except of Kirkman but he didn't said anything about that. ;)

  • Maths in TWD?!?! Ahhh *explodes*.
  • Or it could be an easter egg just to tell us what year it currently is but the world may never know :D

This means that Clementine and I are also the same age if she was born in 1994 :) Wow... she has birthday in autumn and I have birthday in autumn. I'm scared now because I always wear a hat when I'm outside like Clementine. O_O *hiding in the corner* Did someone watching me right now?!

It could be some sort of easter egg or just a random year that the graphic designer decided to put on it.

The year that TWD game and comic takes place in is ambiguous, looking at things like the large TV in Clementine's house and the store in Macon and also things like mobile phones are never talked about it looks like it could take place from the early to mid 00's.

Or it could be an easter egg just to tell us what year it currently is but the world may never know :D

"The Walking Dead takes place in our world, as if this stuff had started happening in October 2003 and continued from there. Now, (Issue 38) in the book it's still only like... June 2004 at this point (If you're keeping track)." "[The Walking Dead] is set in modern times ... but the book started in 2003 and only a year has passed in the book. But that doesn't mean it's 2004 in the book ... maybe it 's 2009 ... who knows ... who really cares. I don't want to be specific."https://(answers)(.)yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130222114018AALM2BP remove the parentheses (I know this is Yahoo answers, but they use Kirkman himself as a source).
  • Out of interest, TWDG wiki page mentions that the outbreak started on a July 20th (according to one of the video tapes we see in S1E4)
  • Well... maybe, maybe not. It's just predictions because neither Kirkman nor Telltale never said anything about when the outbreak has started.
