The Ukraine conflict

Putin & co. are at it again. Any non-US citizens who've been updated on this?

  • I only briefly heard about it in April. A few people said that we'd look back on April as the year WW3 began.

  • I doubt that will happen, but I think there's always the risk of full-out war. This ordeal has only strengthened the fact that Russia's current government is an openly hostile one, both to the West's interests and to the long-term interests of its own people

  • Ukraine called in air strikes just recently in response to armed insurgents and mercenary activity in the East. Donetsk 'on the verge of humanitarian catastrophe.'

  • I was kind of hoping that the human race had evolved past world wars. :(

I doubt it will come to a world war, but it's still quite possible that it will come to a war. If Moscow does invade Ukraine the West will face significant pressure to respond in some way.

Europe now committed to diversifying away from Russian gas amid widespread fear of Moscow using it as political weapon.

  • I think if a world war does occur in this day and age where we have nukes, then we are in deep shit. Remember, America and the Soviets nearly went to nuclear war, and everyone thought that they were fucked. I don't think they had nukes in WW2, but now that they do, another global war screams disaster.

  • They'd better. Right now Russia has the EU by its balls. All it takes to really hurt them is a little squeeze.

I hope all's going to be well with you guys from Ukraine.

  • No one takes Obama seriously. I'm sure Putin is trembling in his boots.

On this day Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia have signed the European Union Association Agreement — the first step on the path toward integration.

    Congratulations!

  • Wow.

  • Yeah, of course that's fake. Those terrorists must have been making tanks for themselves, they just stole the blueprints from Russians. It's a news fake.

On a serious note, those guys do have tanks. And those aren't the models currently used by our own armed forces, mostly by Russia.

  • If they're paramilitary maybe the tanks are Russian hand-me-downs. Still, you usually need specially trained crews to operate a tank.

  • Many of those terrorists are Chechnya wars (some rare types are reported to be the Afghan War veterans) veterans, and some are conscripts, who finished their service, I'd bet some of them are trained in tank and artillery usage.

The United States of America dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Now that we know the long term effects of nuclear radiation after that tragedy and nuclear disasters such as the Chernobyl meltdown though, I doubt that any of the world's most powerful nations will be quick to use nuclear weapons. Of course, even a war waged without nuclear weapons is a terrible tragedy, as the use of traditional weapons can lead to a great number of casualties as well. :(
