So...who knows Russian, and is willing to translate?

edited July 2014 in The Walking Dead

With the scene at the end of ep 4, there were some Russian lines I could guess at for context clues but the rest not so much. Like, the woman asking "Is that her?" and Arvo replying "Yeah, that's her." But when they found out about the baby, it looked to me like the Russians were arguing amongst themselves about what to do, and it looked like the group might've been forcing Arvo to stick up Clem and co. Does anyone know what they were saying exactly? For all you folks who speak Russian, any help would be appreciated. ;) Maybe the game files also might hold some clue?

Edit:
I put this in a comment below first, but: some highlights from the game files, courtesy of Dionn:

The one named "Vitali" says, "Buricko! Buricko! We can take them! I can kill any three of them with my bare hands, we don't even need the weapons! That's right, I mean you, eyepatch man, you're weak and I could tear out your throat with my teeth, who needs to use bullets for the likes of you? I'll kill you all and eat your entrails for breakfast!" yikeesss. But he also could say, "What the hell is going on?! This is too much! Buricko, back down!" and also, "Buricko STOP! You're going to get us ALL killed!!"

Buricko says, "So, this is how it's going to be, is it? That's fine! This is as good a day to die as any other! You don't scare me, you pathetic scavengers! Just bring it on! Bring it on! Bring it on!"

Maud says, "Just get the medicine back! this is crazy!"

It looks like Buricko wasn't backing down even after hearing about the baby, but the rest were?

  • this seemed an odd thing to do imho.... having no translation..

broke emersion for me....small gripe for an otherwise pretty solid episode.

  • How can that break immersion, the characters also can't understand them. It's one of the reasons why the last scene escaclated quickly.

  • Yeah, I'm curious too. Please, if anyone understands the Russian language, I'd appreciate it if you could translate for us. :)

How does that break immersion? If anything, it breaks immersion when everyone's speaking english. The variations in people add realism, really.

  • the tatooed guy commands them to put their weapons down(he says it 3 times)If clem tells they have a baby avro will try to stop his friends.the woman near avro asks if clemss group are the ones they are looking for.avro says yes. BTW They have the worst russian pronociation after arnold scharznegger in red heat.

  • Thank you! :D

  • I thought so. I don't even speak Russian and it sounded pretty shitty.

  • Thank you for that. I skimmed through it. Arvo seems okay, the woman(his sister?) too, especially if you mention the baby, but the other two guys...man, I would not mind if they were the ones who die in the shootout.

  • The first time Avro spoke I thought he was from spain. :D

  • Yeah true, because I'm sure you speak Russian and in real life, you wouldn't know what the hell anyone was saying. this adds to the immersion, because we don't know if they are talking about murdering us on the spot or helping us!

  • I don't think it broke the immersion because most English speakers don't speak Russian too. I think it added to it. I can understand why you found it distracting though. It's frustrating to not know what's being said. Personally, it made the scene a little more tense for me because I had no clue what these people with guns pointed at my friends and me were saying.

thats the pint of you not understanding it, its realistic, you do not need subs.

if i could understand russian i wouldn't of made a point against the subs not being implemented... idiot.

  • Actually i do because i have a hearing problem and so don't always hear what is being said when there is a lot of sound at once..

    so...

  • maybe state that in your original message???

  • Native russian speaker here. What they're yelling there is nothing of importance, really, you aren't missing out on anything.

TL;DR everybody panics and are telling each other to put the guns down.

(For what it's worth, Kenny sounded like the most bloodthirsty guy in there, LOL.)

Although some parts of it elude even me, because the loudest "Russian" in there was obviously an American VA who reeeeally struggled with the pronunciation (yet his very last line was in perfect English, go figure). Half of it was gibberish. Two others (Arvo and the girl) seemed like a real deal though, and props to Telltale for that.

Hope this clears things up for somebody.

If you had said it broke the immersion for me because I have a hearing problem then we wouldn't even be discussing this. You made it seem like it broke immersion because we had no subtitles for the Russians in game. But others are saying if there was subtitles for what they were saying, wouldn't it break immersion because Clem and no one can speak anything but English?

  • The tattooed guy keeps telling Arvo what to say to the group, and when you said you have a baby with the group they will ask it in russian "they have a child" or something like that. So, it isn't much from what i understood from it, but Arvo says the lines aswell. Like when he says Buricko says we will take everything, he told in russian that "tell them we will take everything" (mb not exactly like that but you get the point).

  • If you want the game to be as realistic as possible, remove the subtitles.

sigh... it's my opinion on it.. i have subs on and all i kept seeing was speaking russian popping up... it got annoying and distracting..

that's what i've been saying.... having no translation did break my emmersion in the episode,

then you came along and said you don't need them... dur dur herp de derp...

then i clarified with my reason for why i do need them...

and as for having 'clem and other not understanding it' this another one of those 'opinion' things i'm smart enough to know they wouldn't know, but i would like to know everything going on to make the correct/right choice in the situation...you know cos of my opinions...

you know make an informed decision about how to handle things ?
