On a scale of 1-10 how good/bad was episode 4?

Honestly, this was the first episode of the franchise that I really disliked. I'd probably give it about a 6/10.

    The Good:

-Mike is an amazing character. Super helpful and funny. That scene with the raccoon was legendary. Bonnie's pretty cool too.

-Felt like I bonded a lot with Rebbecca in this one. Her suddenly becoming a walker during the ending argument was a real shock.

-Jane teaching Clem new survival tricks.

-There were kinda-sorta hubs in this one, plus a puzzle. Episode was also longer (took me about 2 hours).

    The Bad:

-I felt as if there was too much focus on Jane. She was pretty cool, however she has a pretty cold personality which doesn't make for fun conversation. So I personally found myself a bit bored with all of her scenes.

-Nick dying off screen. I actually did find this character really interesting during the first two episodes. Too bad he stopped being relevant after that.

-Sarah's death. Saving her was pointless. Even after my words of encouragement about how Carlos would want her to be safe and that she needs to start trying, she doesn't change at all. She just continued to sit around scared until she dies later in the episode. Was really hoping she would try at least a little after I saved her.

-I think they made both Luke and Kenny too unlikable in this episode. With the upcoming "pizza or ice cream" choice, I guess they just wanted to make it more difficult by having the characters be assholes/screw-ups in this one, but I think they overdid it. From what I've seen, many players don't want to be with either of these characters now.

I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but there's most of my quick thoughts on the episode. Haha, I wish I could have enjoyed the episode as much as the rest of you, but oh well. I'll just cross my fingers that the finale will be awesome.

  • 6/10 mainly because it was freaking short.

+Hubs are back - Woohoo, even though there were 2 where you just move forward...but still pretty good.

    +New locations - Yaaaay...more things to explore!

+The Pacing - it was decent, reminds me of episode 1, with the whole back and forth...

    Here we go...

-Choices DON'T matter any more. - because whatever you do,the outcome is the same.Sarita, Sarah, Nick ,everything...and the consequences are short termed...Kenny's pissed at you...then baby is born.Yay, forgiveness.Teach Sarah how to use a gun, doesn't even use it,Steal, don't steal, etc...

-Lying episode banner - No Eddie, no hatless Clementine,no smearing fresh human blood on her face to prove that Clem lost her innocence, nothing, was hoping for Clem to swear a lot at everybody(She only called Kenny an asshole though, not enough) in this episode, she's an 11 year old Telltale...you're turning her into a mature adult that has good ideas and solves problems rationally, that's bot how kids work.

-Nick's death - Has huge character development in EP2 and has something in common with the main character, killing their loved ones before they turn, has 4 lines in EP3,has 0 lines in EP4 and dies quickly offscreen even though Luke said Nick went to look for help minutes ago (Pete & Lee survived almost a day), also no pool of blood proving he lost a lot of it.Only reason to be seen zombified so Jane can make you kill Nick because "you're his friend"(Should've make Kenny shoot Duck then huh ,Jane?),also Nick's death how much Luke is an asshole...reacts poorly to his death, but Jane's departure makes him scream...wow..also Telltale listened to the fans wanting a hatless Nick...Thanks Telltale.

-Sarah's death - A S1 innocent Clementine, helps you with the cut in EP1,asks you if you wanna be her friend cuz she's surrounded by adults, asks you how to use a gun in EP2 (there was a notification bar for it as well, but it doesn't matter because she doesn't even use a gun),only character you talk to a lot in EP3, dies anyway in EP4.No Sarah for Clementine to teach her how to be a badass.

-Jane - clone of Molly, just more colder, "Looks like people can't let go of their past." > Talks a lot about her dead sister, feels (sorta) bad for leaving her sister behind because she forced her to do something, tells you to leave Sarah to die because she is gonna pull you down?!,apparently her sister Jamie pulled Jane down too...how exactly? Also asks Luke to have sex because she doesn't wanna deal with her "feelings"...Holy...most complicated character.

-Clementine's aim - Was really terrible at aiming in EP2 when the turbine was turned off, few days later she's all of a sudden good at shooting zombie heads...what?She couldn't shoot a zombie that was 5ft away from here when she was hiding behind a rock in EP2! This really pissed me off...

-Russians in America - Really, Telltale? Why not Nate's group or Eddie ,but Russians...

"I'd eat the shit out of that raccoon"

    6/10

  • Does every episode really have to end on a cliff hanger, though? Its getting kinda pretentious, IMO.

8.5/10 Pretty good episode as a whole. The ending was perfect tho.

  • Probably a 5.5/10.

  • Really? All the high ratings? The episode was a let down, it was just better than episode 3.

    7/10.

The following is a very basic review. I'd appreciate if anyone wishes to discuss it, add something to it or wants to counter any point made on it, whether good or bad.

    The good:

Jane. She gives surviving the apocalypse another angle that many don't consider because of their morality. She brings some harsh truths. Her development, although reminiscent of another character, was welcome, and I liked what she had going with Clementine. She arguably taught her a lot this episode, and feels more like a "friend" (I use that term lightly) than poor Sarah as a character ever did.

Rebecca's death. Although I still feel weird seeing her attitude towards me/Clementine change so suddenly in Ep2, she had a nice enough arc (as to what this season is concerned) that ended in a sad, mildly unexpected but I think ultimately satisfying way. In Harm's Way made me see her as a strong woman, and I appreciated what Amid The Ruins had to offer of her.

Mike and Bonnie. That scene with them... I think more of that was needed with the rest of our cast throughout the season. It was not the most important moment of the episode, and yet it felt so much more human than a lot of the drama going on around the group. Just look back on that scene for a bit.

A neat little applied puzzle. It is a positive for me, for what it's worth. Oh, and decent basic walking simulators (hubs).

Sarah's death in the RV/Sarah's interactions if saved.

EDIT: You can argue about the execution of various aspects of it all, but I think that the change of pace and the fact that this, as a penultimate episode, can stand as a story on its own is a good thing. It ends, of course, on a cliffhanger leading into No Going Back, but it ends up feeling more whole of an experience than say, In Sheep's Clothing did.

Here, the threat of the dead and the unpredictability of the apocalypse were very much present. I don't know if you've noticed, but Carver's arc took precedence over the walkers earlier on this season. It is not necessarily a bad thing or focus, I am just mentioning that it happened. I thought it was nice to remind us that although we escaped from the clutches of a madman, he had a point: Out here, we can become easy prey to the scourge of the old world.

Action and reaction. I have said that a way to develop the protagonist is through the feedback gained from the group, and how we respond to that. Well, we got it alright, too. People confront you and what you do. Not always in the best way, but hey, you got to start somewhere. I read there is a variation of a scene with Luke where you speak about Carver's murder, and your choice to stay. That is some kind of something.

There is still something off about Clementine... but I am not the best man to put into words what it is, and besides, I think it is a little too late to address it.

    The bad:

Jane. Her story is a little too much like Molly's and I find inconsistent to her character her little fling with Luke and to an extent her sparing of Arvo.

Nick's death. @DomeWing333 said that his arc probably ended back in A House Divided. I can see that, but his involvement from there on feels so much like an afterthought. It is insulting to see what used to be a character become a prop and then a walker. More than Nick's death it's the lack of anything from him after Ep2 what makes it taste so sour to me.

Sarah's death IF SAVED. It feels like the game is trying to prove its point.

Arvo's choice. Here we talk once more about inevitability in The Walking Dead. It ends up not mattering.

Luke and Kenny's conflict. It was on an acceptable level when Kenny confronts him after his royal fuck-up earlier, but felt kind of forced at the end of the episode. I guess you can put it all on the tension of everything that happened.

    Conflicted:

    Kenny. Just... Kenny.

    Closing thoughts:

I see this as a decent episode. It carries the weight of everything that's made Season Two a weaker installment in the series, and has flaws on its own, but I also liked some of what it did. I still say 8/10, with a "considering" at the end of the sentence.

  • 7.5, good but not great.

  • 3/10 for me,sorry Telltale,i rate the rest of this seasons episodes 9,10,and 9

  • It's not the changes to the characters that piss me off, but the way they came unexplained. We were led to think Jane was a very careful and smart person, only to have her invite Luke for some sexy time one episode later, risking their lives and pregnancy (well, maybe it was anal or whatever, but it was still reckless and that act by itself doesn't make sense coming from Jane). We have all seen Luke could screw up, but he was always TRYING to help the group in his own ways, like chasing the truck to Carver's. Ever since ep 4 he became simply an egoistical, annoying asshole.

All of a sudden every character gets an 180 to their attitude. As I said, it just felt forced.

Well that's your opinion and it's perfectly valid. Still, you have to understand that not everyone is going to lower his score to 1/10 for t

  • Well, I don't know. The more I think about the second death of Sarah the worse my rating gets.

  • 8.5/10 The only things I didn't like were Kenny's attitude, and the ending, other than that... I'm going to go as far to say this is the second BEST episode of the season! Third of both seasons! :D

  • 9/10

Nick's death was executed poorly though.
  • Agreed with pretty much all of this, including the overall score. There was a marked improvement in gameplay integration and better character dialogue than the previous episodes, but the mishandling of character deaths and especially the reactions to them dragged the episode down.

I will also add that although the choice with Arvo seems not to matter very much, it was still a pretty great morality choice. Especially because of the parallels between that scene and the beginning of the season with Michelle.

The following is a very basic review. I'd appreciate if anyone wishes to discuss it, add something to it or wants to counter any point made

  • 10/10

I feel like a 9 would be more fitting (I really only had problems with Nick and Sarah's deaths...) but I'll give it a 10 anyway. The writers did a pretty good job. :)

  • I actually had to pause for a long time and think about stealing the pills from Arvo. Especially because I was thinking of last season with the damn Stranger. I thought it was a pretty good choice in that you were really torn: Your group needs the medicine badly, but Arvo seems like a nice enough guy. I ended up stealing em and I regretted it. It is like the Stranger in that, yeah, it doesn't really matter: He'll still come after you anyway. But it's a tough choice regardless.

  • The nick and Sarah death doesn't completely ruin the episode, 8 out of 10.

  • Certainly, I agree with both you and @ForClementine, it was a good moral dilemma. It seems kind of silly to complain about something that Season One was also guilty of, but it is still there, so I might just point to it as well.

  • 9/10 Fantastic episode. Sarah's death was stupid though, and Nick's death was rushed and meaningless, but everything else about this episode was perfect! <3

    The worst season 2 rating.

    8/10.

  • It was good 8/10 for me.

  • 9.0. While many character's deaths were wasted and underwhelming, it's the first episode this season that made me feel genuinely scared of my actions and evoked a lot of emotion.

  • 9/10 for me. The best in the season so far.

  • 7/10

At least it was a little better than episode 3

  • 8.25/10

    I couldn't decide between 8/10 and 8.5/10 XD

  • I had the same problem earlier today. Settled for an 8, though.

  • This. Please, no more cliffhangers. Enough already. The first three episodes of season one, which were the best episodes of the entire series, had no cliffhanger and felt a lot more satisfying than anything that came after that.

  • After Ep.3, this one had to be on some sort of crutch. It did what it was supposed to, which was to focus on the delivery of the baby, and it did it well. While I do wish there was more reaction shots from Clem regarding a few key moments in the episode, overall it was a solid experience that delivers all kinds of feels. There are happier moments, as well as heart breaking moments; but most of all, it doesn't give the player an excuse to put the controller down. Unlike Ep.3, you do play the game for the majority of Ep.4's length, a definite improvement.

    8/10.

It was pretty balanced and had some cool interactions. Nick's death didn't have a "Sorry Pete, I failed" option though. Also the fact that it ends on yet another cliffhanger but, that aside it was good. Solid 8/10

  • Nope, I was about to give it a 4/10 but I figured that it wasn't THAT bad.

    xD You work for IGN?

  • 6/10 a lot of wasted character developement

  • I agree on the wasted character developement but that was even worse with the 400 days characters in episode 3, still the episode was pretty neat.
