I'm not really offended by these urban jokes. Just irritated and annoyed by them.
About Clementine's ethnicity though, up until Lee cut her hair, I'd convinced myself that she was asian. Main because of her eyes and most obvious her skin colour. But I think facial features and hair styles are what determine ethnic backgrounds a lot more than skin colour. There are no asian girls that I know of that have naturally curly hair like Clementine's, let alone wide noses or even wide eyes (well maybe Japanese girls for the ladder).
And yet, when Lee gave Clementine a haircut, I was finally assured that I was wrong. Hell, for all I know, she COULD be mixed and I'm only saying this because both me and my sister are half-black and half-Chinese. I looked at some photos of her younger self and she actually does look like Clementine.
Her older design in Season Two looks more distinguishable as African-American than Asian, that I know for sure.

You're taking way too much offense to the "urban" thing. It's just a joke that was made one time in a video game, people think it's funny so they like to make more jokes about it here. Big deal. There is no harm being done here, you are creating conflict where there is none, and twisting a joke into something ill intended and malicious. Seriously, why the hell is everything racist or offensive nowadays, not everyone is obligated to an apology/explanation if their feelings are hurt, even if what's said was offensive.
It's called having a head canon. Some people think Clem is mixed, some don't. Build a bridge and get over it.
Same here. As a mixed person, I had the belief that perhaps one of Clem's parents was part-Asian due to me knowing a lot of Asians with naturally curly hair and her skin tone. For whatever reason, the developers chose to make the original Clementine a light-skinned black girl rather than a dark one.
As of now, her skin-tone in Season 2 makes it evident that she's not just white. She still seems racially ambiguous to me regardless of any confirmation that she's black, which I think is a deliberate choice on the developers in order to make her more 'appealing' to audiences. Compare her design to Michelle, the black teenage bandit in the opening scene of the Season.

I know that she's been confirmed outside of the game as "African-American", which leaves the room for her parents to have some mixed blood. Just pointing out from my perspective as a mixed person that her design still makes her look racially ambiguous, likely mixed, rather than unambiguously black. Not once is her actual race discussed in Season 2, and the only time you get to see her parents when alive is a split-second glimpse of a photograph in the first episode.
It's common in video-games to have protagonists who, even if they aren't white, are still designed to look vague enough so that they can be interpreted in multiple ways. It might be true that there are black girls with Clem's skin-tone, but the question I have is why she was designed that way rather than as a darker-skinned girl.
Imagine if she had the same skin tone as Mike or Christa. I wonder how fans would have reacted to her then.
They made her lightskin rather than darkskin so they she could have wider appeal. (Apppeal to white people) it's marketing pretty much. Just like with silent hill the main character is white or an "every-man" so people could connect with him easier.

head canon-Elements and interpretations of a fictional universe accepted by an individual fan, but not found within or supported by the official canon.
It doesn't matter if you say she's 100% black, or even if it's confirmed that she is, if people think she's mixed they can. It's not that big of a deal. Personally, even if the creators say she's 100% black, I'm not buying it.
Urban is just one word. Words only have as much power as you give them, I suggest you chill out and just enjoy the game.
Exactly! That's the issue I'm interested in: the idea that lighter skin is more mainstream. A lot of fans who haven't received confirmation otherwise have assumed that Clem's a white girl and have drawn fan-art portraying her as such, and that is partly due to the fact that Clem's a light-skinned girl and her race is never brought up.
It would be interesting in Season 3 if her design 'darkens' a little more - she'd still be a beautiful, light-skinned African-American girl, but it'd be harder for her to be mistaken as just "tanned."

Telltale confirmed that Clementine is the same race as Lee.

Unless I'm missing something in the article, the only confirmation I see regarding her race was that she was initially portrayed with racial features that would have excluded the possibility of her being Lee's daughter and then changed to have racial features that allowed her to potentially be Lee's daughter. But this doesn't necessarily mean that she is intended to be fully black as Lee is, only that she is intended to look like she is at least half-black.

I personally think they made her skin tone the way it was for 3 reasons:
Clementine's designs is inspired by the company's art director's daughter
The lighter skin for an African-American girl gives her a more unique look.
If they wanted to use Clementine to reach out to a more, for lack of a better word, "white" audience, they would've have just gone with the more logical decision and just make her white.
I just think Clementine has one of the coolest character designs in both games.

I'm saying that Lee is fully black because both of his parents are shown to be black. Clementine's dad is shown to be black but it's unclear whether her mom is black or mixed or some other race entirely. I'm not saying that Clem can't be fully black; I'm only saying that I don't think the article that Jen cited confirms that she is fully black (or I guess fully whatever you think Lee's race is if you don't think he's fully black).
Well IMO using the word "urban" is a LOT less offensive then saying black. For example Lee is the ultimate urban. Is less offensive than, Lee is the ultimate black guy. In fact I find it to be a lot more comedic for someone to say urban rather than black. Like it's an inside joke on the forums lol

So that means he's uneducated for saying what our government teaches us??? Yes, there shouldn't be "race" but don't blame him Duck_was his son for using it the way we were taught to. You're making a big deal out of nothing and this is why we can't talk about race on this forum because this happens. I don't mind being called black or african-american. Could be. Wouldn't surprise me. But it also wouldn't surprise me if she were half-black or some other race. You can't always tell just by looking at someone. I think you would agree with me on this.
She's definitely not another race. You have to look at her hair and facial features. No other race has hair like that. Also her nose is round and wide. Her lips are also very define.

Oh I know that. Its a reality in today's world, sadly.
shes not black, she has African ancestors sure but she herself is not black. she is clearly white.
Yep always has been.

okay.
I always thought clem was black just very very light skin
Clem is black. You can be lightskin and black you know? Look at her features. White people dont have noses and lips like that.
I don't see hate threads for the jokes regarding lighter skin-toned people.
This isn't a hate thread.
For anyone that might want to read this.

Her race isn't ambiguous they've said she's black.
Head cannon? Fandom term I'm guessing? Anyway she's not mixed has said this themselves.
And for the urban thing. The problem is people using a racist to describe other black characters.

race has to do with species so Clem is a part of the Human Race.
The right question is Clem's nationality.
