Has anyone seen Mary and Max? God damn is that movie dark. It delves into themes such as depression, poverty, and even suicide! Oh yea, the things that make a kids film just great!

  • Why would he kill himself though?

Sounds like a type of suicide a writer would do...That or hanging.

  • The end of Toy Story 3 got kinda dark for a little bit. Speaking of Pixar movies, the opening to UP was also kind of depressing. I dunno if "darK" would be a good word to describe it, but it certainly wasn't cheery.

  • Yeah, definitely this.

Honestly, I think it's somewhat harmful just how shielded children are these days from negative emotions. Kids' movies in the 80's were incredibly well made and dealt with the whole range of emotions.

Best Dark Kids' Movie is definately, hands down, the Secret of NIMH

  • I know he was gay, and his lover had recently died (it wasn't after The Brave Little Toaster - he wrote that in 1980 and died in 2008). Plus he lost his house and was close to being evicted from his apartment. Btw, he died by shooting himself. (or so says Wikipedia)

Sounds like a type of suicide a writer would do...That or hanging.

  • Was that an impression of the Looney Toons character based off of Peter Lorre?

And if the songs aren't creepy enough, there's always this:

I remember thinking that movie was a little too dark to be a children's movie.

  • Coraline is full of wtfs and nopenopenopes

  • The Iron Giant. It's a animated movie that touches on dark topics like death and cold-war paranoia. Despite it's strong anti-war/gun message, it's very morally gray with no clear right and wrong. Plus it was sad as fuck. I went to see it at age 7 and I was a wreck afterward and the Cold War imagery flew right over my head.

  • Leave? But you just got here!

Seriously though, I saw that movie right before I went to college. Cried like a bitch...twice.

  • I must admit that Corpse Bride is a quite dark movie. It is centered about a woman who fell in love but was tricked and killed by her greedy over who only wanted to run away with the money of her family. Most events of the movie happen in the world of the dead.

But I can say without a doubt that Corpse Bride was one of the movies that made my childhood awesome. Even though I was only 5 when I saw it, I absolutely loved it and I used to watch this cartoon literally every day and I always cried at the end. This is where my big passion for stop-motion movies began.

But still, I wouldn't call it the darkest children movie. It doesn't have such horrible theme as the "9" does. The whole movie is in turbid, dusty colors. Nine ragdolls are trying to survive in the empty and destroyed world filled with awful machines. It's dark from the very top of it, the cartoonish picture, to the bottom, the fable of all this. As a little kid (I was 7 at the moment) I was wrecked by this movie, but I can consider it beautiful. Gloomy yet very bright. Simple yet very deep.

I certainly hope all of you will watch it.

  • Maybe it's because I grew up on Nightmare Before Christmas, and because I was well into my teens when it came out, (and was kind of gothy), but Corpse Bride was more endearing than anything else for me. It was a really cute love story with gothic aethestics, at least for me.

    I haven't had a change to see 9 though.

Translation: "Hey, God? Yeah, it's me, Frollo. So this gypsy girl whom I just met, tried to arrest, and whose people I've been persecuting for decades got me all hot and bothered but won't let me rape her. Please make her submit to me or burn in hell for all of eternity. kthanx. In the meantime, I'm just gonna burn down random houses in Paris and the people inside until I find her."

This was a G-rated Disney movie.

  • I think 9 was actually more intended for an older audience.

  • Coraline takes the cake as one of the most bizarre kids films that I've ever seen. Everything about it was bizarre right down to the story, atmosphere, animation, and characters. Okay, maybe not ALL the characters but quite a few of them.
