What is the story behind your name?

edited November 2014 in General Chat

I've recently become very interested in not just the meaning of a person's name, but the reasoning behind christening that person with a certain name, and how from the minute you're named, it is an enduring part of your identity and existence. So basically, for anyone who is comfortable sharing their name, I think it would be fun to share the stories behind your name( the meaning, origin, were you named after a relative, or your parent's favorite author, music artist etc.), do you like your name, and could ever imagine being called something else? Does that name truly resonate with who you are, or would you change your name if you could, and why?

I'll start. My name is Innya, which means "chaste", or "one who is innocent". I'm not sure if the meaning itself describes me perfectly, but I will admit I am innocent in aspects that my peers aren't. I was named after my Grandmother, because I apparently resemble her a great deal physically. That makes me quite happy, for she was a very strong woman from what I've been told, and I wish I could remember meeting her as a child. I've also been told that she always wanted to move to America, so I feel as though I'm fulfilling her dream by carrying on her name. Unfortunately she passed when I was 3, so I only have pictures to remember her by. I can't say I can imagine going by any other name, though plenty of people have butchered the pronunciation, I really like my name.:)

My name is Scott. Because my mum is Scottish. I don't really have an opinion on it, its just a sound that people use to refer to me.

My name is Benjamin, which means "son of the right hand". I'm not sure if that has any direct meaning to who I am as a person or not. As far as I know, I wasn't named after anyone. Originally I was going to be named Daniel, but my godfather convinced my parents otherwise at the last minute... for reasons I don't really know. I also can't think of anyone in my family tree that has shared the name. I might actually prefer my middle name (Alan) over my first name. I actually combined the two to come up with my username on here. I have kicked around the idea of changing my name, though I'm not sure that I would ever actually actively pursue doing so.

  • from the minute you're named, it is an enduring part of your identity and existence.

That's the problem. I hate my name. I think I may have some form of social anxiety because of it.

  • May I ask what your name is? What would you like to change it to?

That's pretty interesting. My Father had originally wanted to name me Manya, it's kinda weird to imagine that you could have been called something completely different had people not changed their minds at the last minute. So that's where you got the username, I was a little curious where you came up with that. I heard that there is a pretty long process that goes along with changing your name, even if I didn't like my name, idk if I would change it.

  • I'd rather not say. That's how uncomfortable I am with the name that was given to me. I don't have any names in mind at the moment, but when the time comes I'm sure I'll have thought of something.

  • My name is Gabriel which means "God is my strength." I don't know why my parents in particular chose to name me that, all I know is that my father originally wanted to name me Richard however my mother was against it. Very few of my friends call me John, which is my middle name. Usually though, I go by my alias Genesis. No reasons in particular. I just like the name.

  • Yeah, I kind of like the meaning, I only wish it wasn't such a common name lol (somehow forgot to even say what it was above, edited it in). I know a ton of Ben's. Your name is a little more unique, I have honestly never seen it before.

  • I have a common first name, which is the same as my father's name, my grandfather's name, my great-grandfather's name, etc. I don't know how far back it goes. When I was growing up, though, I was determined that if I had a son, I would never, ever, give him my name, because it was so annoying getting mail and calls asking for my name and not knowing whom they really wanted.

What's funny is, now that people have e-mail and cell phones and things, your name doesn't need to be as unique as it used to be. So it's not really a problem anymore.

Thus far, I wound up not having any kids, and my brother, with a different name, wound up giving my name (almost) to his son. So the family tree will look a little off-kilter.

  • My name was supposed to be Amadeus, but my father decided on Christian because religion.

(My middle name is Matthew because Bible.)

I was named Melanie because my dad and mom like some singer artist with that name and they like the sound of my name. I think my name means "dark". I don't think my parents knew about the meaning but the meaning doesn't really suit me...

  • The meaning of your name is a lot cooler than mine imo. I only know one Ben if it makes you feel any better lol. It's a Russian name(but apparently is also Nigerian or Greek.:/ huh, the more you know), so that's probably why you haven't heard it before.

I'm just glad my parents named me Benjamin opposed to just Ben, considering Ben only means "son". That would have just been totally uncreative. Jamin means of the right hand (or something like that) in Hebrew, so that's where the whole meaning comes from.

How is your name even supposed to be pronounced? If I didn't know any better, I would just pronounce it like it's spelled lol. Inn (as in a place where people stay the night) - ya (as in yah). I'm assuming that is totally incorrect though.

  • Well, It's pronounced een-yah, I can understand why people often think it's in-yah though. You weren't too far off, I've had people think it was pronounced ein-yay.XD

Crazy George is a name i earned years ago. I was always the "crazy" one, and when alcohol and guns are involved... Things Happen.

Does that name truly resonate with who you are, or would you change your name if you could, and why?

I don't think so. I struggle with the beast every day. I don't think I'm crazy, just had a bad shake in my past, and i been paying for it ever since.

    I stopped Caring long ago.

I was named for a friend of my parents. She's in jail now for drug possession. Thanks, mommy and daddy.

  • But is your name really George? I only know one George. You'd think that name would be common/popular.

  • You would think, but i think being a George is a lot to deal with. I believe your name shapes who you are, and some names carry heavier burdens than others.

  • All right here goes :P My name is Ashur, which is an Assyrian name (Assyrian being my ethnicity). I don't really remember the full story behind it, but I think it's because my parents wanted to name me after the king of Assyria Ashurbanipal. I also googled it and found out my name is the name of an Assyrian God. So I like my name a lot, wouldn't change it for the world ^_^

  • Glad somebody likes it.

I like Christian Matthew. Especially Matthew - that's one of my favorite names.

  • Yup :P

which is an Assyrian name I've never heard of that race before. Is it somewhere from the Middle East?
