"We're thrilled to continue our growth and bring our unique style of scripted entertainment to the next generation of digital media, and do that across thousands of different devices. Our top priority is to continue fostering an environment where the most talented and creative storytellers in the industry are working side by side with the world's biggest creative partners. We're already working on some of the biggest franchises in entertainment, and when you add our unannounced partnerships and upcoming original IP, it's clear the most exciting time to be at Telltale is now, and there will continue to be more and more opportunity to innovate ahead of us."

While announcing that Kevin Bruner is stepping up to CEO of Telltale, Telltale also announced today that they have an original IP in the works. What do you guys think?

  • Damn, how many are they going to have?

  • That's interesting news, hopefully it'll be something worthwhile and memorable.

  • Huh, that's really interesting.

  • The quantity shouldn't matter as Telltale generally has a small number of people handle conceptual ideas for the story and gameplay concepts long before they have a normal sized team working on the game. Telltale's games are pretty easy to make as they essentially have a narrative focus (meaning simple gameplay), are sold in episodic intervals, and mostly have the same gameplay and engine across each title. With Telltale simplifying their gameplay to focus on choice making over puzzle solving from Walking Dead onwards, Telltale's work nowadays is more oriented towards taking a story and putting it through their gameplay template.

Damn, how many are they going to have?

  • True enough it wasn't me being scared about the quality changing as it was i'm impressed that they're taking on so many projects at once.

Just imagine...One day, we will never be Telltale free!

Oh, that's good to hear. :)

Usually, it's a bad "damn", as in "how dare Telltale work on X instead of Walking Dead."

Honestly, I assume you knew most of what I said anyways, but I just used your post as an excuse to make that response to calm down others before the actual complains start. ;)

That will be the day. :p

A new original IP sounds AMAZING! I'm stoked to find out what Telltale can come up with!

  • Yup, I'm glad you did too or I would have gotten a lot of the complaints.

Maybe from now on when I make a good "Damn" I should make it longer like DAAAAAMMMMNNNN...Or just make sure people know it's good...Decisions, decisions... :P

  • what's original IP?

  • An original project that's not based on another media property.

    what's original IP?

  • I remember when I told everyone that Telltale should have made an original IP before and people told me they never do.

An original project that's not based on another media property.

This is your chance email Telltale with your ideas for a game about the Forums. :P

  • Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Wait Telltale is doing another game?

Cool, I just hope they can handle it.

  • Hmmm....I wonder what it could be:

  • Really curious to see what it will be, though I'm sure it won't be for a while. Telltale probably has a ton under their belt so we probably won't be getting the new game till sometime in 2016.

Hopefully with the way the company is growing they can hire a bigger staff and we won't have to wait so long for new game :)

  • Hopefully by original IP they mean TWAU S2.

  • Im going to guess the original ip will take place in the real world and will be a drama.

  • So what genre do you guys think it will be?

    Personally I'm leaning towards comedy.

  • A game to make your own TellTale Games ;3

First and foremost, hopefully they don't become victims of "professional lensing" (the habit of seeing one's theoretical concern only in the familiar terms of one's own discipline, sometimes accompanied by the denial as to whether anyone outside that discipline could possibly have anything interesting to say about it).

Second, this is exactly what's needed now that they've drawn in fans from many corners of the internet. An original work will certainly draw from the areas they're currently working on and create a more diverse fanbase, though perhaps also reveal some hardcore trolls in the process.

I just wonder if they're planning on updating their game engine or anything like that in the process, because some other games coming out this year are going to be quite amazing visually (i.e. The Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt), and I think keeping their old school style may turn away some potential fans just because it doesn't look appealing or "modern".

Once again, I'm hoping for something like Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, or Night Gallery, where each episode is unique but has common themes portrayed differently in each episode.

On the other hand, what if they keep experimenting and instead of tailoring a storyline they're going to start to try and tailor a character that's unique to each player? That is, building a persona that can be inserted into different narratives or something like that? I'm certainly interested to find out what they have in store, even if the price increases a bit, too.

  • 5 games in the making sounds like a lot but congrats to Kevin

It's great to see that they are making a original IP, it will be fun to see what they come up with and it gives them a chance to create their own world and lore that they can do what they want with and with no restrictions.

  • How to distract attention from "growing pains" and turbolent changes: just say you're working on an original IP.

    Mission accomplished?

  • The Wolf Among Us isn't an original IP.

Hopefully by original IP they mean TWAU S2.

  • Excited. Telltale's so known for adapting existing properties that it's a rarity to see them tackle something entirely new.

  • Has telltale actually ever done its own IP before?

  • The closet they've ever had to an IP was the Puzzle Agent series based on an assortment of flash cartoons by Graham Annable.

Has telltale actually ever done its own IP before?

  • Looks like more than five, it says they also have some unannounced partnerships as well.

  • I know, I was joking.

  • I don't care, after minecraft. Whatever TTG.

  • Exciting! Will be interesting to see how the company changes once they've completed all the series they've committed to. Would like to see a new engine at some point though.

  • It's definitely interesting hear, it's about time Telltale take on something original. Still, I wonder why Dan Connors is stepping down?

  • Dan Connors is just taking a role on the advising board I think, he isn't outright leaving.

  • Actually, the recent titles do use a newer engine - Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands, and possibly Wolf Among Us and Walking Dead Season 2.

  • I know he isn't leaving, I'm just curious as to why he would step down as CEO even though he's still going to be an executive advisor and be on the board.

Dan Connors is just taking a role on the advising board I think, he isn't outright leaving.

  • I think it's a "enhanced edition", not a new engine.
They added some little things like the asynch loading that reduces stuttering (and worsened other like the mouse movement or some audio glitches)

  • Being number 2 after being number 1 for ten years will be a tough choice to live with.
    I bet he'll leave within 5 years.

  • Anything is fair game for Telltale right now considering they are very good at writing both types of stories (comedic and dramatic).
