What happened to showing respect for others?
We've all seen it, people showing total disregard for each other.
And because of not having to face the other person directly, people are especially disrespectful online.
And I have to wonder, when and why has it become cool to show disrespect for others?
Having respect, and showing respect is a very big deal.
It is a crucial element to maintaining healthy- long lasting relationships with other people.
Without respect, there's no such thing as friendship, nor even family.
In fact, without a mutual showing of respect, civilized society cannot exist.
Showing disrespect for others does not make a person cool, and it especially does not make them an adult.
When people act that way, what it reveals them to be, is immature, and self-centered.
People who are truly adult, show respect for others, even when they disagree with them.
Now granted there have always been disrespectful people, and nobody is perfect.
But nowadays, it is the norm for most people to behave that way.
So what do you think?
Why has this overwhelming self-entitled and disrespectful attitude, become so prevalent in our society today?
And what do you think can be done to curb it?

Kids aren't taught respect for others, which In turn means they have no respect for themselves.
One of the most aggravating things to see is this mentality that if you don't have anything nice to say, you're a "hater." And that word is thrown around with such malicious purpose now that it's now a label. But really it's just ignorant children using the term to mask the fact that they're insecure and can't handle any negative opinion that doesn't favor theirs.
People are naturally dumb until properly educated.
I think that's it,we're interacting with strangers online, unknown face & location, not even people we know personally, that's why most people won't feel necessary to respect each other, and there's nothing more can be done about it except the standard moderation rules.
Parents are part of the issue, I think. There are some parents out their that shouldn't be parents, and shouldn't have influence over the future of the human race itself. I think some parents either neglect their child and don't guide them properly, allowing for the media and other people to pick up the slack, treat their children that way and in turn lead them to treat others in that manner, or simply teach their children to think that they're superior to others. There are disrespectful little shits at my school who go out of their way to interrupt teachers, harass people during lunch (this I know from experience) or just make life more difficult for others. I'll bet at least a few of those kid's parents didn't teach their child right and wrong.
If I were a father, I would teach my kids to always treat people with respect and dignity, regardless of how much they dislike or disagree with them.
Spot on. It starts at home just like you said. If you want kids to grow up showing respect, you have to respect them as well. Yes, children are usually wrong or don't know what they are saying/doing, but that's apart of growing up and everyone makes mistakes - adults do all the time. The trick is as a parent is to not look down at their child when they're wrong. Explain to them what they did wrong and why it's wrong. Simple punishing them won't do anything.
'Cause it's really hard.
First of all, people think about themselves the vast majority of the time. To respect others, you have to first realize that even though you have your own ideas about everything, yours is not the only way, and others' opinions are equally valid. And even when they're not, and you have undeniable proof that your views are better, they aren't going to like you for shooting their beliefs down.
It's more than just parenting. TV shows are also all about conflict and saying the "other side" is wrong. Because that's what gets people to watch. It's not a great life strategy, though.
I mess up on this at times, too, but I try.
It's the Internet, shit happens.

The only way to earn my respect is to beat me in a battle to the death. If you win, I'll respect you and that's worth more than all the money in the world.

Respect is earned, not given.
At this point in my life, i do my own thing. I have my three dogs, i have my guns.. I don't need anything else.

That is a great movie.
Respect is for many people a two-way deal, I always see people being disrespectful to people who disrespect them, but allot of the time, people have to want to be respectful, being forced to respect someone for some people makes them disrespectful. If people just showed respect to one another, it wouldn't be something we can earn, I personally think we should earn the respect of other individuals.
People don't inherently deserve respect, I'd go as far to say calling people self entitled and immature is very disrespectful of you OP.
Easy, society is run by baby boomers and most of the teenagers were raised by them.

I'm the "bad" guy in my world.
If you can't give people respect, why should they respect you?
I don't really want peoples respect, what does it get you? What benefit does having people respect you have? You can get them to do stuff for you? I don't have some superiority complex, I don't want people to respect me.
very well.
What does respect give you? shakes head...
Out of the words of babe.
You didn't answer, what does having people respect you give? A sense of superiority?
What it shows, is that you care about other people.
The world does not revolve around any one particular person.
People need each other.
And quite frankly, by not showing respect for other people, a person reveals themself to be selfish.
And selfish people, are short-sighted people.
