They are mods, they're already praiseworthy.
[Mod edit: I think this discussion has derailed the thread enough so I'm going to ask that discussion goes back on topic. Thanks! -Blind Sniper]
I completely disagree, I don't think anyone deserves anything until they've shown they deserve it.
Being a mod doesn't mean you're immedi… moreately worthy of praise any more than being a politician means you're immediately worthy of praise.
As trust, praise is earned over time. At least, that's how most humans interact with the world around them.
We shouldn't praise authority figures just for being authority figures.
Definitely. There's a real risk with nonsensical authority(/hero, they overlap a lot) worship on forums, especially those with a lot of underage players such as here.
By this I mean, for example, on some threads moderators have got more likes for saying 'this is a good video' than someone who isnt a moderator saying basically the same thing, just because they're a mod.
People see the moderator sticker and feel they have to treat them distinctly to others.
Unfortunately this tends to happen both on forums with volunteer mods and hired mods, though I still think it's extremely important that a change to hired actually-interactive community managers is made soon.
deserves anything until they've shown they deserve it
This...this. Same goes 100% for respect, unless you show me you're someone that can be respected I don't really feel I want to respect you.
I think accepting all the responsibility that comes with becoming a moderator deserves some respect. They are volunteers, aren't paid, and have to clean up a lot of things.

Of course there's that, but I'm talking about day-to-day life. I mean, of course if someone takes up a position that requires a lot of responsibility, that's respectable, but any normal person with a normal life? I can't really feel any respect for them until I feel they deserve it.

We shouldn't praise authority figures just for being authority figures.
Except they aren't just authority figures. Mods have earned that position, I'm sure they don't just pick names out of a hat to see who becomes a mod. Mods deserve any praise and respect they get, since they've clearly done enough outstanding things in the community to earn their position, hence why they're moderators in the first place.

Also completely disagree with this, due to how many people on this forum have said they would be moderators if they were offered.
It's not like it's a job no-one wants to do that someone has stepped up and taken on - loads of people would love it (myself excluded, I disagree with the current system of moderation so would be loathe to contribute).
I think accepting all the responsibility that comes with becoming a moderator deserves some respect. They are volunteers, aren't paid, and have to clean up a lot of things.
The only evidence we have for thinking they've earned it is based on the decision of other moderators, so it basically arrives at the same problem.
I can't remember anything 'outstanding' that either of the new mods here have done before, though you're welcome to educate me. If I knew these things, then I would respect them.
If you can't remember any, yourself being an active member of the forum, you've got to question the impact of these so-called outstanding actions, as well as question your assumption that you'd always agree with every decision a moderator makes (see the first part of this post).

Yeah but Mods has certain powers having a mentality that a mod must earn my respect before I respect him hmmm
Disrespect a mod who hasn't earned your respect see how far that gets you, you will be banned before you can blink and any users disagree about it banned to for mentioning banned users XD
It's all well and good feeling that way but the mods have the power not you

Well, I suppose there's not much you can do about it...
Although I feel a lot of the way people think of you has a lot to do with how you present yourself, and why I feel that grammar is important on the internet. I mean, around friends and all you can be however you want to be and that's fine, but around people you don't know, especially on the internet, I feel that acting (for the most part) professional and not completely either assholish or in a way that only your friends understand you. I don't know, respect can be misused a lot.

I actually never talked about dis respect, only earning respect.
And why would you assume just because I don't respect someone I would outright show that I don't have any respect for them? If I don't respect someone I wouldn't get myself in trouble over it.
And not only would it be unprofessional to ban someone for "disrespecting" the mods, but banning others for disagreeing would be completely unprofessional and would only lose respect for them.
Yeah but Mods has certain powers having a mentality that a mod must earn my respect before I respect him hmmm

This is what I was saying above though - your reason for respecting the mods is because other mods have said they need to be respected - but why are those mods worthy of respec in the first place?
And again, if you havent noticed any impact to such an extent that you cant even give me one single example, then accepting it without a certain degree of cynicism is simply foolish, in my opinion.
All I'm saying is we shouldn't automatically respect people before they've actually done anything we know enough about to base this decision on.
I can't remember anything 'outstanding' that either of the new mods here have done before
Just because you don't remember doesn't mean other people don't, I'm sure mods take note of these things ;]

Well you can always do research, or ask an older mod why they earned their place? I wouldn't really know, I'm just an average old forum user, I really don't pay attention to these sort of things :P

I've done some research into their posting history and haven't found anything outstanding, which is what caused me to raise the question of automatic respect in the first place.
I'm not saying they won't show themselves to be good moderators, I'm just saying they haven't already done so and we shouldn't automatically believe they will just cause someone else thinks they will.

Well I feel the opposite way, there's no reason we should think they'd be a bad mod until they've proven otherwise, just seems kinda silly if you ask me

So you think we should respect everyone until they show they don't deserve it?
Of course, treat others the way you want to be treated. If they haven't earned my disrespect I see no point in giving them that disrespect, don't really see how that's disturbing but fine. Anyway I think we should end this here, it's kinda going nowhere if you ask me :P

I don't know them but Yay!
Time to change the title!
Ditto. But still, congratulations.
They must have left and come back judging by their profile
Hail Mods.
I made a post just like that in the WWoYM thread XD.
I, for one, welcome our new moderator overlords. I'd like to remind them that, as a trusted forum personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their invisible ban lists.
Yeah, you know what they say, great minds think alike and all that.
In the year 2018 everyone on this website becames a mod. #TimeTravel
Thanks a lot for the congrats everyone! I'll do my best around here!
I hope to see you around.
ONE DAY IT WILL BE ME HERE BEING PRAISED AND YOU ALL WILL MY KNEEL BEFORE ME, AND ALL WHO WRONGED ME WILL SUFFER!
We'll see if they do anything worthy of praise first, eh?

There's a difference between 'disrespecting' someone and simpyl not specifically respecting them.
I respect them as humans, I just dont respect them as better than any other members of the forum yet, as I have no basis to do so.
'The mods have the power not you' is also, frankly, a really grim way of telling someone they shouldn't voice opinions.
This is what I was saying above though - your reason for respecting the mods is because other mods have said they need to be respected - but why are those mods worthy of respec in the first place?

Okay. I find that a bit disturbing but you have the right to your view of the world.
Not directly, but by being openly cynical it encourages them to prove their worth.
Dissent is always a good thing in any communities, if it's controlled on behalf of the dissenter.

Hoping he doesn't think so, but I'm thinking I really wouldn't have any opinion on them until they've shown they can be a good mod.
So I'm guessing you loved that PM spam everyone was talking about the other day huh?
This is totally you right now.
