You enter a dark, cold cabin in the woods. It's pitch black and you're at risk of freezing to death, but you only have one matchstick left.

You can just make out in the dark: a candle on a shelf, a stove in the corner, and a fireplace. What do you light first?

  • Albert and Bernard just became friends with Cheryl, and want to know when her birthday is. Cheryl gives them a list of 10 possible dates:

    May 15, May 16, May 19, June 17, June 18, July 14, July 16, August 14, August 15, August 17

Cheryl then says, "I will now tell Albert which month I was born in and tell Bernard which number day I was born on."

She whispers these to them separately.

Albert then says, "I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Bernard does not know either."

Bernard says, "At first I didn't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but now I know.

Albert says, "Well, then, now I know when it is, too."

    When is Cheryl's birthday?

Albert said he didn't know when it is in order to see Bernard's reaction, and used that to his advantage:

Bernard has figured out that the month isn't May or June, because Albert told him that he won't be able to figure which month it is, and he would've guessed it immediately if it was either the 19th or the 18th, because they only appear in specific months. This means it wasn't a month with an exclusive day that only appears in that month (i.e. May or June), so we can cross those off the list.

We also know that after deducting those two, Bernard has managed to figure out which month it was, and that by knowing this fact, Albert could deduce the remaining days and find the correct date as well, which brings us to this conclusion:

Since Albert figured out which date it was after Bernard had figured out which month it was, it must have been either July 16th, August 15th or August 17th, because only those don't appear twice on both months, and he wouldn't have been able to figure which month is it if the same day appeared more than once. After deducing this, Albert had figured out the day, because he knew that if Bernard was able to figure out which month it was, then it must be the sole month with only one option for a day, that is the month of July.

Therefore, Cheryl's birthday is July 16th.

  • Yup :( although when you say it like that I can't help thinking of some tragic accidents that happened with that recently. Although did you ever hear about the woman that happened to, but because she fell on some red fire ants nest and got stung hundreds of times, that shot her full of adrenaline that might've actually saved her life.

I'll tell you this: You will need to make assumptions and see if they makes sense.
