This whole Cecil the Lion thing is just like Shamu. Except funnier.

Cubs dying is part of the natural world. In some places in Africa the mortality rate for lion cubs is around 50%.

In that his case if the cubs are killed it would have been triggered by the death of Cecil, but cubs are often killed by rival predators like hyenas or leopards. The animals hunted by lions will also kill cubs if they stumble across them. Buffalo for example are big threat to cubs. Coalitions of male lions will also typically kill the cubs when taking over a pride, because it causes the females to go into heat. The new males then mate with them and produce new cubs, with their genes.

Jericho, the coalition partner of Cecil has been confirmed to be still alive (it's been clarified that Jericho is not blood related to Cecil, but is the protector of Cecil's cubs, as male lions work in coalition with each other to protect the females and cubs from threats and outsider male lions).

So, thankfully, the chance of survival of the cubs is greater than it was feared (as without Jericho, the chance of survival of the cubs would be pretty much zero).

  • Hunting outiside of survival and population control is barbaric and stupid

  • I just find it Hilarious how the world is literally going to shit, A Rapture Scare is upon us, America is being run into the ground, This Confederate Flag BS is still going on, The cops Are killing people, There are natural disasters happening everywhere, And in the Midst of all of that, People are worried about a fucking Lion. And I get that the Species in endangered, But come on. Do people cook and eat Lions, or sell them on store shelves? No. So they aren't that Important to survival in my Opinion.

And sure, We can try to save the species, But I think Saving ourselves should come first.

In the end of the day, he made a mistake. We are not perfect, anyone who feels they are perfect can judge them, for they will be judged in the end. It was a animal, that had already lived a majority of its life. The animal probably would of died naturally in the next two years, because the average lifespan is 14, and he was thirteen years old.

I'm not trying to downplay his mistake, but i don't see it as this horrible action this man has done. Imagine having a hobby you enjoy, investing a lot of money into doing something you been wanting to do your entire life, then it all blow up in your face. I honestly feel sorry for the dentist.

  • We cant save our species, like you said there is too much going on, so I dont think its crazy that people are upset about a protected animal being lured out so he can be killed as a trophy. I personally find it disgusting, but I, along with the rest of the world, will have something else to be upset about tomorrow. At least people care about a living creature which seems all too rare these days.

Im glad to hear that. I know nature is cruel and uncompromising and death is the order of things, as Scaeva pointed out, but I cant help but feel a little better thinking that those cubs at least get a chance. And i learned some facts. I didnt know lions formed coalitions, thats actually pretty interesting.

  • If the gov't wants to persecute the dentist for killing Cecil then so be it. If these lions have monitors attached to them then it's hard to believe they want him killed.

When you're dealing with an endangered species, even one is important, as in this case there are 24 cubs, and as far as lions go, it would be lucky if even half of them make it, and that's with a male lion father and another male lion working in coalition to protect them. With the father dead, and only the male lion coalition partner to protect them, the chances of survival for the cubs is likely less than half.

The thing is that by saving endangered species, we actually are saving ourselves. Letting any species go extinct can lead to unforeseen and disastrous consequences, as life is mutually symbiotic, since life forms rely on other life forms to survive.

As I said earlier in the thread:

The reason why we protect endangered species is because the consequences of the death of an entire species can have unforeseen repercussions on the ecosystem. We learned this when we killed all of a particular type of mosquito that were swarming around a body of water and unwittingly caused the death of everything around it that depended on them (including fish, frogs, plant life, other insects, etc). Human beings are just like any other living thing on this planet. We're dependent on the life of other living things. If we don't slow down the mass extinction that's going on right now, we could eventually be looking at extinction ourselves several generations from now.

There's a big difference between hunting and going after an endangered animal that is being monitored for a scientific study by driving into a national park at night and illegally luring it out to shoot it.

I'm in support of hunting. Everyone in my area hunts. Just about everyone in my family has hunted or fished at one point in time. I love venison and freshly caught fish. I'm not in support of illegally killing an endangered animal though.

Even big game hunters are speaking against the illegal action of killing Cecil the lion.

Heck, even lion hunters agree that Cecil the lion shouldn't have been shot, as the act of killing that particular lion was an illegal one.

I'm sure he does. Regret is not a substitute for trial though, as he was involved in an illegal act so he needs to go to court. The professional safari hunter and the land owner who allowed Cecil to be shot on his farm have went to trial in Zimbabwe, but he's in the United States while Zimbabwe is fighting to get him extradited to stand trial.

If he just went back to Zimbabwe on his own accord, the outrage over this incident would calm down a lot.

He's likely going to get extradited anyway. The outrage is only going to get bigger the longer it takes for him to own up to his illegal actions, so he might as well help to make for a less hostile situation at home when he gets out.
