What games do you think are overrated?

  • Exactly! It had everything to be AMAZING. An amazing art style, a brilliant soundtrack, and an intriguing story, but the gameplay was a mess and the game was way too short to appreciate the story.

It was a game I wanted to love so badly but it felt unfinished. Still has amazing OST though.

    Oblivion

In short, I learned that no matter how good a story is or the lore (which is my favorite aspect of rpgs and supposedly what Oblivion excel ins) I can't enjoy it if the gameplay is so awkward and clunky it breaks my immersion. I have yet to complete the game because I can't play it for more than a couple hours each year. I just can't find the fun in the game no matter how hard I want to.

In truth, though, I would never say it's overrated because it's small indie game and I don't really hear it talked about outside of it's soundtrack

I guess. Its just that I finished the game recently and just needed somewhere to vent.

Heavy Rain. Not a bad game by any means, but definitely not the masterpiece everyone says it is.

  • Dishonored

    Life is Strange

    Shadow if Mordor

  • Undertale

  • You guys are going hate me for this, but....The Last Of Us. Now i like TLOU, but i don't think it deserves a 2nd game. A lot of people love it and want a 2nd game. I love it too, but to me, is just another zombie game. I think is a little overrated. (My opinion)

  • I am curious, what did you find overrated about Dishonored?

Dishonored Life is Strange Shadow if Mordor

  • From games I played this year and did not enjoy were wwe 16, mad max, Dishonored, minecraft(not the telltale one i didnt play yet), Life is strange, stars wars battlefront, Arkham Knight (I loved the game but just so much bat mobile :'/.

  • As far as Battlefront is concerned, it's pretty unanimous that its beautiful but a terrible game. They had a perfectly fine series they were adding on to and could've just done everything the first 2 did and add on new content while updating graphics but no they just......I can't even tell what they were thinking when they made this game. Probably: we're EA, will just make a crappy game, people will buy it cause of the hype for Star Wars and then we can milk them with DLC.

So, as time was passing through, I would also like to add a game on my overrated games' list and that is Life is Strange.
It had lots of potential and I really liked it but after the finale, it was a major disappointment. The choices didn't matter at all, the voice acting needed some work and the story had lots of flaws. Episode 1 and 2 were like fillers, episode 3 and 4 were amazing and those two gave me hope that the finale would be amazing. But for me, the finale was a huge disappointment... I really wish that there won't be a S2 of LiS...

  • I love the game, but it's definitely overrated. I only play the game for its multiplayer now.

  • FNAF and I agree with @Wolfenus54 on Life is Strange.

Amongst those I've already mentioned I'd now add the Uncharted series. I had never played any of the games before, so, since I've always heard very good things about Uncharted, I purchased the Nathan Drake collection to fully enjoy the adventure. Now, I'm not saying that Uncharted isn't a good series, I've had enough fun with it, but is it as good as everybody says it is? Nope. The story is meh and frankly absurd, the characters are stereotyped and the gameplay isn't particularly innovating, so can anybody tell me why this game is so damn appreciated?

  • But that doesn't mean his opinion is wrong. S1 being better than S2 is not a fact, it's an opinion. Besides, there's a huge difference between disliking a game and thinking it's overrated. There are plenty of games that I love but I still think they're somewhat overrated.

  • 1)The Legend of Zelda Series:I don't even know why people consider it the best thing in existence,it was amazing but not anywhere near perfection.
2)GTA San Andrea:It was brilliant and even I consider it to be a masterpiece of it's time, but nowadays? It's mediocre.Shitty AI,cheesy story, very poor graphics (even for a 2004 game). And the new "update" just salted the wound even more.Still love it though :P
3)The Half Life Series:I know it innovated the game industry forward, but it still was kinda repetitive,I think people only play it nowadays for mods.
4)The Elder Scrolls Series:It may have the best lore I've seen in a video game before, but other than that the game is alright. And with how people consider Fallout 4 a disappointment, the series' future doesn't look so bright.
5)UnderTale:I don't know much about the game so that is kinda unjustified, but I feel the game is shaping up to be the next FNAF.

    I don't think there's a game that has achieved perfection,yet.

    • Journey
    • Fallout 4 - Highly over hyped and given passes on various issues
    • MGS V
    • Her Story - Viva's acting was good but not something stellar that made me get into the concept of the game. More so believe her performance is overhyped.
  • Did you just criticize the graphics of a game made back in 2004?

You can't say a game is overhyped because it is old...

  • Mafia 2 and Tomb Raider. The most disappointing games I have ever played. I expected a lot more.
Mafia 2 set a great scene, awesome environment. But the characters were just terrible, bad story, sub-par shooting mechanics and driving miles between every objective with no fast travel was just so tiresome. The ending was also pretty bad...yet, so many people love this game. I wanted to love it, I love Mafia/crime stories but this was just bland.
Tomb Raider is one of the worst games I have ever played. It got so hyped and so many people loved it and I just can't see why. Average story, superhuman Lara which removed all sense of trying to survive in this 'hospitable' environment, every moment in the game was the exact same thing (move, shoot/puzzle, repeat), fighting was repetitive and the list goes on. Very average game...as were the tombs. Only thing this game nailed was atmosphere, that's it.

Compared to the other Elder Scrolls games, it's a step down from it's predecessors in almost every way.

Agreed. Same with Fallout 4, I play it, I enjoy it, but then I remember Fallout 3 (and New Vegas!) and can only feel disappointed.

Betheda are making better looking games, with better combat, but they aren't making better games. The quests in Skyrim and Fallout 4 are so forgettable and bland, whereas Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 were sprinkled with amazing ones. Nowadays, Betheda just don't even bother. "Go here, kill that... again. I don't care. And neither do most of you. Lulz" That's their approach to everything now. :(

I played Morrowind, loved every second of it, same with Oblivion, and same with Fallout 3, New Vegas too. Then came along Skyrim, and I enjoyed it, but it didn't feel special like the others did. And then Fallout 4 was even worse. Bethesda make great games.

Those games are just not RPG's anymore. At least they certainly aren't ones I have any interest in. And people are so blinded by the quantity offered in Bethedsa games -- they ignore the fact the quality just isn't there. So yes, Skyrim or Fallout 4 would be my top picks for overrated games. Because I sorely wanted to love them as much as critics do, but I just can't.

Also (even though it's already been said) Life is Strange. I loved the first episode, and the second even more so. I really liked 3 too. I was thinking, finally, a worthy competitor to Telltale! And then Episode 4 happened which IMO was a bit of a mess, especially with the universe-swapping cop-out whatever in the ending (that they ended up retconning completely as if it wasn't pointless enough... and then they went and retconned the entire thing by the end-end) yeah, Life is Strange started strong, they seemed like they could rival Telltale, and then unfortunately they, in my opinion, just dropped the ball, and kinda fell apart... ending up, not quite deserving of the credit it garnered.

I'd also like to throw the Witcher in there. God, the internet loves the Witcher games. But I tried 1 and couldn't get into it. I then played 2 and it was the same thing. Dull characters, and I'm all for no-hand-holding, but how many times can they tell me to go to a place, without giving me any fucking clue as to where it is? And I lol'd about how so many raved about how dark, gritty and mature it is. "DID YOU SAY SOMETHING, OR DID YER JUST FART!?" I think I heard from guards more often than the guards in Skyrim ever said, "I used to be an adventurer like you..."

Plus having sex scenes does not make something mature or "gritty." That's so not how it works. So yeah: Skyrim, Fallout 4, Life is Strange and the Witcher.

  • I can't remember if I commented on this or not.
But in all honesty, I think ANY game can become overrated.

  • I don't think you know what overrated means.

Because many people loved the characters- particularly Drake, the visuals for the time they were released were impressive, the platforming is solid, the set piece moments were also considered to be impressive. Gameplay is standard, I agree but never became tedious for me.

And if there's going to be a second season of LiS, then I will probably just watch playthroughs of it unless it's better than the first season.

Agreed. Deleted the game from my PS4 after I finished the finale.

  • Didn't see your post the first time i went to this page. My bad.

As for Dishonored, I didn't find the game's world to be compelling ( characters included with the exception of Daud), same goes for the gameplay, which I thought was decent, but not as good and creative as the critics and even some of the fans made it out to be. I enjoyed the Knife of Dunwall, and the bigomore witches dlc a little more than the main campaign.

Mate, you haven't answered my question. What do you find overrated about Dishonored?
