Playing Dark Souls For the First Time, Any Tips?

Alright, so I finally got a decent computer and picked up the game on Steam for 3 Euros. So far I am having a blast with this game, it's gorgeous. The PC controls suck like hell but hey, the harder the better right? Anyways, I just wanted to ask if any of you pros for some tips or secrets. Especially on the Covenant part, I'm really torn on what to choose. I stand between the Sunbros and the Darkstalkers, which do you think I should choose? I recently got through Blighttown (FUCK THOSE MOSQUITOS!) and now I'm at Ash Lake (like the most beautiful place I've ever seen) I'm playing a melee knight and my favourite weapons are the halbeards. So yeah any weapon tips, secret tips or just overall advice is appreciated.

Lots of dodging and good timing.
As well as trial and error . You learn through experiences.
Sometimes it's best to fight naked, making dodging way more effective or at the very least the most minimum amount of weight for armor. Experiment with this to see what you are comfortable with. Also, punch every chest before opening. It damages them, but not break em. I do this just in case a nasty surprise awaits from it. Also, invest on something range. Bow or magic, it'll help down the road against annoying enemies like anything that can fly. Also, if it stands still or sits and does not attack, chances are its an npc. Talk to them, exhaust all dialogue and always say yes if a choice is given, unless it's a trick question. Hopefully that helps.
Also, master the art of parrying and riposte if you can. It doesn't work on all enemies, but when it does it saves the day. Also backstabbing too. Don't have to be sneaky, just get behind em, attack, and let animation do the work.
Thanks for the responses guys, I'll remember your advice.
Try not to die.
Return it. Buy rise of the tomb raider instead.
The only advice you need.
Right. The game is easy, I just suck.
This might be a lame advice, but in the forest/woods near where you meet the talking cat (can't remember it's name) there are lots of hostile NPCs which will respawn and gives you lots of XP for killing them, it's a really good place to farm XP. Also, focus on getting magic and fire spells they will help you a lot against future bosses. The most frustrating boss in Dark Souls is The Four Kings imo.
Watch your weight so you dont fat roll.
Talk to everybody As often As possible. And don't forgot to Upgrade your weapon by the Smith in "Undead Parish". Other than that, just Play it. You will get better.
Hmm... Well, always play online. It's very helpful. Don't underestimate the game, always be on your guard. Keep your shield up, don't trust messages that are close to a ledge, don't waste items unless you absolutely need to, when you're opening a chest never have anything less than full health, Upgrade your weapon at the blacksmith, and keep your distance from enemies unless absolutely necessary. It's a really amazing and breath-taking game, and honestly one of the best looking games of all time. It's basically The Legend of Zelda's spiritual successor, which makes me love it even more.
Okay, while I love Rise of the Tomb Raider more than I love my own family, don't dis Dark Souls, dude. It's beautiful and really fun.
