Best Pre-Walking Dead Telltale game?
I've been a fan of Telltale since TWD Season 1 retail disc came out, and I've played every game to come out since (apart from GoT, which I'm waiting till I finish watching Season 3). I was wondering what, if any, of the Pre-Walking Dead games are worth playing? I just got BttF and TFMI on sale, and I've got the Third Season of Sam and Max, though couldn't get into it. What would you suggest, and can I get it on the PS3/4 since those are my systems of choice?

I'd say Sam and Max: Season 3, but since you don't like that, I'd say that Poker Night and Puzzle Agent are also worth checking out in addition to Monkey Island and Back to the Future (which you mentioned buying).
I'd say either Sam & Max S3 or Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People for me.
Back to the Future was pretty good, Jurassic Park is fun if you put up with the wacky stuff, and the other things the prior posters have mentioned are solid.
I'd be willing to give it another shot. I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy it, so I'd play it again just to figure out why. Thanks!
Is SBCGFAP on PSN? I've always had a soft spot for Strong Bad.
Thanks! I'll have to check it out.
Sorry you couldn't get into Devil's Playhouse (I personally adore everything about it) but Back To The Future was pretty entertaining if you want simple puzzles and a good story. if you want more of a challenge Tales of Monkey island has some pretty clever puzzles with a pretty funny and surprisingly emotional story (as it goes on). And, if you just want to chill out and listen to some funny dialogue there is always Poker Night 1 and 2. If you want a rougher Telltale game that plays kinda like how they play now there's always Jurassic Park which has a pretty interesting story if your a fan of the movies, but also has some messy exploration and some unfair QTE's.
It is.
Loved all the S&M content.
I'll definitely give Devil's Playhouse another go, maybe I just wasn't in the right mood. Should I play the first two seasons? That might be why I'm having a little trouble getting into it.
Please play the 1st 2 seasons or at least Season 2. I know Season 2 is on PSN if that's your only option, but as Sniper mentioned it's not required at all.
It's more of a self contained story but it does have references to past seasons. You might not just like the earlier puzzle games with quirky logic?
I don't know, I like the older LucasArts and Sierra game (with a hint book nearby) so I don't think that's the case. I think I'll try from the first season, and see if that helps. Thank you!
Damn that microwave solution. Damn it.
Back To The Future
Sam & Max is why I came here, and it's still my favorite. Tales of Monkey Island is pretty good, though. Wallace & Gromit were good, too, but you can't get them anymore. And I also like the poker games, the Puzzle Agents, and even Hector (though you have to be pretty tolerant for that one).
I really enjoyed Back to the Future. I couldn't get into Sam and Max. I guess I just didn't like the characters much.
Back To The Future of course! The game that got me into Telltale.
And maybe Sam&Max too.
Except, TFTB isn't "hilariously bad".
Was the post Jurassic Park fallout the last time the team actually involved us? "Okay... So that didn't go as expected. What do you guys want going forward?" I can't stand new game forums anymore. Have they done that again or is it pretty much "We can do no wrong! Check out these figures!" now?
And no, I don't think it really effected how TWD ended up. NO ONE answered with... that. It was a step back into the realms of "game" though. So at least we got that.
woah weird why the hell can't you buy wallice and gromit games anymore? i just checked a few places including this website and you can't buy it, luckily i have them on gog (got the telltale bundle a while back) but it is stupid you can't buy it still, there must be some ridiculous and archaic legal reason for it though
The only two I've played is Back to the Future and Jurassic Park. Hated Jurassic Park, but I loved Back to the Future.
Jurassic Park is honestly not that bad. Yes, the QTE are very unfair and annoying, and it has some really dumb shit in it, but it's an ok game.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I never liked Sam & Max. Just doesn't appeal to me, I guess.
I believe their license to sell the game expired, so you are correct that it was for legal reasons.
Although I don't think they did anything as strong as reaching out to fans, they did acknowledge in interviews/etc that JP was a little too far in some areas, and during Season 1, acknowledged that players wanted more control. Despite that, for Season 2/Wolf/etc onward, they went back to their mindset of making their games feel more like interactive movies. Because, this time around, they have the choice system, their choice to push their games towards interactive movies is a little more valid to people since you are actually participating through the mental role playing of making choices instead of only doing QTEs like in JP.
Still, I think more gameplay in modern titles would be neat, but at least they've learned from JP.
Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse is actually one of my favourite Telltale games to this day, rivaling Tales from the Borderlands and The Walking Dead Season One for me.
I would recommend all three seasons of Sam & Max mainly, but Back to the Future and Wallace and Gromit were great too. Back to the Future's puzzles did lean a bit on the easy side however, Wallace and Gromit was pretty easy too except for the final episode, I remember getting stuck on that one quite a few times actually.
i hate that kind of thing, it is archaic to have an expiration date on selling a game, companies should never sign a contract that means they can't sell their own product after a a few years, it is just so backwards.
Yeah, Devil's Playhouse is my favorite classic-era Telltale game, and just like you, I also think it rivals Walking Dead/Wolf/Borderlands/etc.
Actually it's the opposite of archaic. Legal issues are only becoming more and more abundant. Glad I have them already as well.
true, but it is still backwards thinking
The Devil's Playhouse is, was and probably will always be: Telltale's finest hour.
Devils Playhouse was awesome and Telltales most underrated game
Here's the related thread in the W&G forum, which includes a link to Telltale's official statement, which basically just says their distribution agreement expired.

This is probably another unpopular opinion considering the Walking Dead fans outweight heavily in this community compared to those who helped Telltale Games before that with their money but I gotta say that I would have preferred that they kept element of puzzles around, even if as optional stuff to progress in the story.
So yeah, their height was probably around The Walking Dead Season 1 episodes they made. It still had some very simple puzzles but at least they were present. Also you were allowed to keep control of the main character way more than in the later titles they have been making lately. It seems that they're reeling a bit back in that and giving you once again more scenes to control the protagonists.
Still, I think that Sam and Max series, especially the third season was when they were at height in terms of actual gameplay as a puzzle game and the Walking Dead season 1 is probably when they found a good balance between some puzzles and storytelling.
So I probably would pick Sam and Max Season 3 and Tales of the Borderlands as they're so different by their design and represent probably best of Telltale Games.
