My favourite:
The one I had negative impressions of but surprised me in the end:
And my least favourite (I still enjoyed it, but not so much as others)
Favourites are Mass Effect: Citadel and Dragon Age: Trespasser
Least favourites...maybe fallout 3's operation anchorage?
My favourite DLC is probably Dying Light: The Following (More of an expansion pack than anything). Has a much better story than the original game, adds a bunch of new gameplay stuff, cool new characters, an amazing plot twist, map is bigger than all previous maps combined, more threats, etc.
Haven't really played any bad DLC as far as I'm aware because I usually wait for reviews before making up my mind.
Only problem I had with operation anchorage was the glitches and my game would crash randomly on the dlc but getting early power armor that glitches the game into letting you wear all power armor before getting training is great
Mothership Zeta was pretty shit compared to the rest of Fallout 3's DLC. The Pitt and Point Lookout are both atmospheric asf and suck you in, with items and characters that fit perfectly. Broken Steel fixed the ending of the original game and added some great missions. Operation Anchorage wasn't too special but it gives equipment that can carry you from level 5 to level 30, for all play styles. Mothership Zeta is just bland with bullet sponge enemies that, unlike the Swampfolk in Point Lookout, are boring and give no sense of urgency or fear. The only character I remember is the samurai and that's only because he's a samurai, while The Pitt has Wernher and Ashur, while Point Lookout has the Brain and, my favourite character in the entire game, Desmond Lockheart. I plan on going back to FO3 to 100% it and I'm worried about whether I can make it through Mothership Zeta again.
Dead Money is underrated. Sure it was difficult as fuck, but that's what I liked about it.
I hated Mothership Zeta. I shouldn't be complaining about difficulty, but for some God damn reason, I died more on this DLC than any Fallout DLC combined. Those stupid Abomination enemies!
And the stupid layout of the ship prevented me from getting one achievement. GG Zeta GG
I actually like Mothership Zeta. I felt like a badass slaughtering those Aliens, befriending these odd people from different time periods and having a space ship battle at the end. I thought it was cool.
Operation anchorage was such an odd choice for a Fallout dlc. The only reason I'd force myself through it was for that amazing power armor.
Borderlands 2 - Mechromancer Pack
The character sold me the game so yeah.
I both hated and loved Gat out of hell. Like, I got to play as one of my favourite Saint's Row characters but [clenches fist] Dex ))))
I didn't like the non-rpg elements like respawning ammo containers etc, felt quite out of place
I got the DLC with the Ultimate Edition. I went into it, completely unaware of what it was or could be. As a result, I was taken completely by surprise. Fallout for me suddenly went from being an overall lighthearted take on nuckear apocalypse to this survival horror nightmare - and I enjoyed every second of it.
I liked Mothership Zeta. Yes, it did not live up to the other packs, but I enjoyed it overall.
Agreed. Atmospheric wise it was great.
Wasn't really DLC. I agree though. I had a real love/hate relationship with the game. I loved the Disney element, but hated that it was 90% shown in the trailer. The game wasn't fun until you were fully powered(flying for 2 seconds felt awful), but then it was too easy once you were. It felt really unbalanced in that regard. The very first demon encounter took me longer to beat than Satan. The curve just wasn't steep enough. I liked that they got Jay Mohr back though.
I've said this before.
I think Operation Anchorage probably would've worked well with Fallout 4's more shooter-oriented engine. Fallout 3's combat system just wasn't tight enough to do the job.
Best : Old World Blues (Fallout) or Shivering Isles (Oblivion). Dragonborn was pretty fantastic as well.
Worst : Fucking Horse Armor.
Pretty much any DLC is shitty. Most of it is never necessary or is not at all worth the asking price. But the worst of it is when a game is unplayable unless you have DLC. Fucking Mortal Kombat X is a perfect example of how shitty DLC is.
DLC costumes for fighting games are pure bullshit. Seriously, they should just be things the player can unlock within the game (and that's how they used to be). Heck, DLC costumes in any game is bullshit.
As for best DLC, I dunno. There are still plenty of good DLCs out there. I guess I'll just pick Alan Wake's DLC episodes, The Signal and The Writer. They were both good continuations of the story, even if The Writer ended on a cliffhanger that has yet to be resolved 6 years later.
DLC is NOT supposed to be necessary. If it's necessary, that's what people lose their shit about.
Best: 400 Days, Whistleblower, Left Behind
Worst: Awakened
I understand the good ones, but what is this "Awakened"?
The Walking Dead: 400 Days
Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep
The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim: Dragonborn
I can't really name any bad ones that I own at least. I know dozens of stupid meaningless DLCs for a lot of things, but I own none! Although I will say, the pricing model for the Sims games and expansion packs? The games are fun, but the prices are ridiculous!
Dead Space 3
That's the thing, DLC that's necessary to play the game never should be. That's what I meant by "Most of it is never necessary". DLC just shouldn't happen in general if you ask me. Just release the full game, release the full finished fucking game and game developers would get a lot more money because people wouldn't refuse to buy their games.
Oh I'm sure DLC earns them a LOT more money than they are losing. Read what you want all over the internet, but the people whom are upset about DLC are about 1% of video game purchasers.
At least one of the creators of those micro-transaction casual pay-to-play games is a billionaire now. Billionaire.
DLC does serve a purpose. With how long it takes to develop a triple A title these days, extending the life of those titles is important to remain relevant. Lets look at the history of Grand Theft Auto for instance. GTA3: 2001, GTAVC: 2002, GTASA: 2004, GTA4: 2008, GTA5: 2013
Without DLC and the essentially DLC PS2 games, you're looking at what were pretty much annual releases, to 4 and 5 year breaks. Do you think 6 is coming out before 2018? Highly doubt it. So they pump away at DLC. DLC is also extremely important to some indie developers for continuing income while working on new projects.
Sims expansions and DLC are ridiculously priced. My girlfriend loves Sims and the cost for each "full" game is insane. The last two games alone are something like $150-$200 a piece. Sigh. But she loves them. Fuck you EA. You're lucky you have Bioware.
At the cost of 80% of their fanbase and/or their mortal soul. I'm just super tired of all of this DLC bullshit. It just shouldn't happen unless the DLC is worth it. I mean, look at the DLC in Dark Souls 2 or Fallout 3, those are awesome. They're like entire games inside of the game. That's DLC done right. Adding characters, weapons, costumes and mini-games via twelve dollar DLC that could have just been included with the main game as rewards for completing specific tasks is fucking stupid. That's how you lose trust and engagement in your video game. Look at Blizzard, they've watered down WoW with DLC and shitty expansions so much that it's basically just a glorified facebook game now, and nobody wants to play it, and now a shit ton of people hate Blizzard. The only love Blizzard is getting anymore is from Overwatch, but people still hate the company.
Look, I know you can make the excuse that this is to boost profits and make more games for that franchise in the future, which is partly true and it's an okay thing to do. But they need to at least make their DLC fucking reasonable. They can't keep packaging unfinished games and passing the rest of the game off as "Extra Content", when that is clearly not the case. In fact, I'd be willing to bet a million dollars that every single Kombatant in Mortal Kombat X's Kombat Pack 1 were already in the game. They were there in the very coding, just locked behind a paywall. If you looked in the games files, I'm damn sure you'd find evidence of that.
Shit, I fucking HATE David Cage games and I hate The Last of Us, but at least the DLC for those games are reasonable! Heavy Rain's DLC added an entire second story to the game, The Last of Us: Left Behind does as well! And those games are some of the prime examples of how the gaming industry is devolving! And don't even get me fucking started on Lego Dimensions. I'm all for the Amiibo kinds of ideas, because Amiibos are cute little collectables and you don't NEED them to play any of the Wii U games (except for Mario Party 10, but fuck Mario Party 10. Same with Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival or whatever it's called), but the fact that the creators of such amazing games had the audacity to fucking price Lego Dimensions as a full game, and lock certain areas for good unless you bought a 5 dollar figure is not only a large inconvenience to the player, but a fucking disgusting business tactic, it's fucking stupid to me. That's like the Kombat Pack times 80 billion because you actually NEED to buy these little shitty figurines to get the full fucking experience! You can play MKX without the Kombat Pack, but for most cases you NEED these shitty figurines.
I'm not denying they're making a lot of money off of this (Because of stupid people who don't know what DLC should be) nor am I saying they shouldn't make DLC for games, because god knows you need more money in an industry where shit like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and... ugh... Five Nights at Freddy's are all dominating the market, but if a game developer is gonna do DLC, fucking do it right. Make DLC worth purchasing and make it at an affordable price. You can get hours of enjoyment off of the DLC in Bethesda's games or the Ballot fighters in smash brothers, or the 3 GAME LENGTH AREAS in Dark Souls 2! You'll play the newest CoD map for 3 minutes before saying "Boy, I wasted my fucking money on this." I just wish some game companies were just fucking smart about things and cared about their players.
I'm really sorry for going on this rant, this is just a subject I'm very passionate about, as I've been playing video games since I was 4 years old. So seeing the gaming industry taking such a nosedive in quality is heartbreaking to me.
I just said it has a purpose. I'm not saying that it isn't being violently abused. The reason I brought up GTA as an example is because Rockstar does do DLC right. Every game of theirs that I've played in the last 15 years has been complete(granted GTA5 had an awkward release and hilarious AI bugs). GTA, LA Noir, Red Dead. All complete games and all their DLC just added to each game.
Where do we draw the line? People can argue that the LA Noir DLC missions were "cut from the game". How do we truly know? Perhaps the story and missions were written and planned, then they decided that it was an easy game to add new missions and expand upon it. Games take over 3 years to make. There was lots of time to do this. Just because DLC is ready upon game release doesn't mean it was cut from the game. Just something to consider.
That's why I mentioned above that the DLC I have issue with is story DLC that impacts the narrative beyond just the DLC. Like Dragon Age Inquisition... or Mass Effect 3-Javik(Damn it Bioware stop this shit). While paying $5 for a costume or weapon pack is stupid to me. I don't "hate" it. If people are going to pay for needless stuff like that, all the power to 'em.
Map packs... I'm not touching with a ten foot pole. Multiplayer DLC has become it's own thing. These games are now their own genre. Everyone whom plays them accepts it and hungrily awaits to shell out more money. I know these people. They aren't upset by it and just think that it's the way these games are. They are getting worse and worse as stand alone titles(although ironically, the major initial culprit, CoD, I hear is getting a little better). People paying full price for Destiny or Battlefront for the content that was actually on disc, is crazy.
Mass Effect 3's Citadel DLC is pretty amazing!
I can agree. While I dislike most of Rockstar's games, I won't deny that they do a very good job with their DLC.
And I can kind of agree with some of your other points, although I still stand by my point that pretty much 70% of DLC is either unnecessary or stupid. Bethesda, From and Rockstar do it right though, and I respect the hell out of that.
GIT GUD.
Pitt & Point Lookout were my fav Fallout 3 dlc's
GOOD DLC's
Fallout 3 - Point Lookout & The Pitt DLC were great.
Borderlands 2 - Raid on Digistruct Peak. Up to OP8 is hilarous.
RDR - Undead Nightmare
Yeah dlc costumes are usually in the game but behind a paywall take playstation allstars battle Royale everything like extra characters and costumes are in the game but unusable unless you pay for them o agree with they should be able to be unlocked for free
The power armor would also unlock training early in the game so you could wear any type of power armor after picking the winterised armor
I just dont know why radios weren't in the game because you can sometimes hear music from the cars but can't activate it yourself but gameplay sold me the game
I liked Point Lookout for its intro. That mansion shootout was sweet.
I haven't played a ton of DLC's but one I really enjoyed was Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker. It's such a perfect balance between story, character development, and action.
Man, Outlast: Whistleblower was great. It's one of the cases where the DLC ended up being better than the game.
