  • As I wrote earlier I always prefer the original voices for everything, including movies. Be they French, English, German, or anything else. It's not just about the Japanese voice acting.

You are overreacting, it's not as if all dubs are shit. Of course, original is original, but "Japanese VA's emotions <33" aren't the only emotion in the world tbh.

  • and I hate it with a passion. Well, not really but..... I really just hate it when they surround the so called "Smart" characters with idiots just so there is the illusion that they're smart, while having a simple story plot, and a plot twisting device (Death Note itself) so they can throw wrenches into the story when the protagonist is almost "caught." They did the same thing on Code Geass, and it really hurt that anime as well.

Though I gotta admit, the potato chip suspense scene was brilliant.

  • You would also miss out on original songs and music in original languages in most cases if something is dubbed. Often these are cut or replaced by something else.

There are exceptions of course, which are well dubbed, but I find these extremely rare. Even in case of Jack and the cuckoo-clock heart I still like the original French better than the English, while it has indeed a good English dub.

  • Well, yeah of course. But YouTube is still there (for anime) because I don't even watch much.

Sponge Bob's dub is beg in German though. For me.

I don't like English dubs, the voice actors don't sound trained for the job in most cases, and the voices are too deep compared to the original voices

Firstly, the actors of dubs are actually trained for the job (they are not professionals for nothing). The main problem comes from translating one language to another substantially different one. Phrases, metaphors and idioms can sound foolish in other languages whereas they may not in another, not to mention that you have to ensure that the voice-over is as synchronised with the original animation as possible. The fact that English and Japanese nearly as different as languages can be, is a massive hurdle to be overcome. Ergo, while I do agree that dubs in most instances are inferior to the original audio (mostly), the effort put into them is commendable.

Secondly, it should come as no surprise that the English voices oft sound different from the Japanese ones, namely deeper. The broadness of one's chest helps to determine the deepness of ones voice, and this is directly affected by race. For example, black people tend to have deeper voices than most others, because they tend to have a broader chest. Typically, white people also tend to have broader chests than Asians. As such, a native white English speaker will tend to have a deeper voice than a native Japanese speaker.

I have found Yu-Gi-Oh! related series lately been quite good (spoken in Japanese.)

For a series that was overtook by now real-life card game counterpart, stuff like Arc-V is quite impressive.

There's something special and ridiculous about having people risking their lives and getting injured over a card game that many in the real world perceive as "kids game" even though it's way too expensive for most kids on a high competitive level.

Jack Atlas is arrogant bastard who has appeared in more than one series so far and I love it. There's something about arrogant characters who then have skill to back it up.

It's fun when they get British to voice British characters, Germans to voice Germans (Even if the Germans are speaking English), etc etc it makes the anime feel very authentic when dubbed. Tragic, however, when they get lazy, and do "Mock" accents, and lazier still when they just get all normal English VA regardless where the character comes from no attempts at all to sound regional.

Read or Die OVA DUB was great because much of the English Cast they actually had English voicing the cast (not American English) but English English. Then they cut corners for other cast, like Otto who was German, they got someone who did a mock accent instead, which was funny as heck but sad. Still better than the original Japanese voices though.

It's wonderful though that the official language in the Mobile Suit Gundam Universal Century timeline is actually English at least according to the anime's lore. Char's Counter Attack you can literally read a letter in a character's hand on screen, and it's in english, all signs are in english, etc etc, writing english, maybe not well translated but. So in a lot of respects when they release an english dub, it's actually authentic to the universe the anime is in, when compared to it's original Japanese.

You can imagine how epic Girls und Panzer would of been if they found regional voice actress for the english dub. But no.... no no no!! It was about as lazy as a voice over could be. D=

Hope it was the english Dub. Even the Japanese fans consider it better. lol

Just remember the director worked on Castle in the Sky, Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team, Big O and many other projects over the years. <<< All mentioned are great programs/movies. =D

Irony aside, the art style used on Cowboy Bebop was also used on Gundam 0083, were as some of the animators worked on 08th MS Team. The first episode of 08th is obvious it feels like a space episode of Cowboy Bebop. A lot of them eventually jumped ship and created their own animation studio over the years though called BONEs. So if you like Bebop look up the studio BONEs and their projects. Some pre Cowboy Bebop sunrise projects were also wonderful that many of them worked on including the Gundam films like Char's Counter Attack, F91, OVA series like 0083, 08th MS Team random BONEs members worked on.

BONEs has worked on Full Metal Alchemist, Eureka Seven, Soul Eater, Space Dandy, among many others.

What I love is when say on Eureka Seven they pay homage to my favorite franchise Mobile Suit Gundam, including a series of episodes which are almost a mirror image of the Ramba Ral Episodes from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam. As well as say in Space Dandy the Prince of that one empire commands a Giant RX-77 Guncannon from Mobile Suit Gundam, which caused me many laughs. BONEs members they really like referencing their past works. lol

Gotta admit though Bebop is one of the end all be all anime's ever created. I think it's been on Cartoon Network since like what 2001? Or was that 2002? They still play it on Cartoon Network randomly, so 14-15+ years of Bebop on American TV and it's only like what 24, 25 episodes long? People love it.

I recently finished watching Cowboy Bebop and it's most definitely my favorite anime now.
