Greatest quotes you have ever heard, or read.

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said:

"You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.
Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking."

Buddha put it this way:

"We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves."

Philosopher and Psychologist William James said:

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes. Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives."

The mind is like a hungry infant, it needs to be constantly fed. And what it is fed effects it. So if you want to have a happier life, you have to change your attitude, which requires changing what you think about, which requires changing what you feed your mind with.

    I was seeking this one:

    - Maximilien Robespierre

    and fell on this one:

I didn't saw any mention he said this once, but this one is good.

"Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. It can not be courage unless you're scared." Eddie Rickenbacker

“Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or fascist dictorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peace makers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” Hermann Goering

    • Without individuals we see only numbers: a thousand dead, a hundred thousand dead, "casualties may rise to a million."
with individual stories, the statistics become people-but even that is a lie, for the people continue to suffer in numbers that themselves are numbing and meaningless. look, see the child's swollen, swollen belly, and the flies that crawl at the corners of his eyes, his skeletal limbs: will it make it easier for you to know his name, his age, his dreams, his fears? to see him from the inside? and if it does, are we not doing a disservice to his sister, who lies in the searing dust beside him, a distorted, caricature of a human child? and there, if we feel for them, are they now more important than a thousand other children touched by the same famine, a thousand other young lives who will soon be food for the flies' own myriad squirming children?

    Some G.K. Chesterton quotes.

"Impartiality is a pompous name for indifference, which is an elegant name for ignorance."

"Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die."

“My country, right or wrong,” is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, “My mother, drunk or sober.”

"If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly."

"It's terrible to contemplate how few politicians are hanged."

  • "We do not need to get goodlaws to restrain bad people. We need to get good people to restrain us from bad laws"

    Why not both?

Deleted that, as I've seen it phrased better by other people.

At this point we have neither good laws or good restrictions on bad ones (at least where I live). We need a legal system based on minimizing social harm, not maximizing revenue and slave labor for the state.

  • Not a quote but Invictus is a poem that I learned for a recital and I fell inlove with it:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

    Also Chaplan's legendary Dictator speech:

  • "Life springs from death; and from the graves of patriot men and women spring living nations." - Padraig Pearse.

  • who's this fucking snowball?

  • "I may be on the side of the angels. But don't think for a second, that I am one of them." -Sherlock

I don't know why I love that quote so much, but I just do.

  • FINALLY MY SAVED QUOTES CAN COME TO USE!

“If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it's not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.”
    ― Dalai Lama XIV

"Just because you're hurt, doesn't mean you get to hurt someone else."

“Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?' 'That is the only time a man can be brave,' his father told him.”

''On your death bed, you are visited by the person you could have been''.

"Death is only the end if you think the story is about you.."
