Just got back from the theaters, what a great movie. I still prefer The Force Awakens, as I felt that that movie, while very similar to A New Hope, had better characters and much more consistent pacing and writing. With Rogue One, the first 20 minutes or so felt like a jumbled mess, especially with all the planet hopping and flashbacks, and while a character like Jyn was fleshed out, K-2SO was a good comic relief ("There's trouble on the horizon...there is no horizon."), and Chirrut was basically the Star Wars equivalent of Toph Beifong, none of the other characters were really that memorable.
Now with that out of the way, onto some of the good things about this movie. Acting was stellar all across the board, and much like The Force Awakens, the effects were great (much better than the prequels, that's for sure). And I agree with what a lot of people are saying here and all over the web, this is definitely the darkest Star Wars movie yet. There are times it doesn't feel like a Star Wars movie, but an all out war movie, especially with the whole cast getting killed off, I really wasn't expecting that from a Star Wars film. And the Vader scenes on (what looked like) Mustafar and at the end were amazing and, again, very dark. It was much darker, but not too gritty that it took away from the enjoyment.
Overall, a great film, I'd give it an 8.5/10.
Also, just in case anyone didn't realize, the story of this movie was developed by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, the same Gary Whitta who was the story consultant for The Walking Dead Season One and writer of Episode 4: Around Every Corner.
i get cha. yeah, they could of saved 1 or 2 and had them make an appearance, even brief, in episodes 8 and/or 9. especially since people love things like that. oh, the age of killing characters in entertainment that we live in. lol
Sure, but what I'm saying is that this movie could've tied in with the OT without all the new characters dying - one or two of them could've… more gone to hiding for example. I'm not saying it's a problem that they all died though, I actually quite liked this approach.
Was I the only one expecting all the characters to die? Due to the 'Many spies died to get us this message' part in A New Hope and the fact no one of these people were mentioned in Episode 4. Because you ask the question, if the rebels had someone as experienced and good as Jyn then why didnt she stick around?
I'm pretty sure that the reason why this has surprised many people is that they didn't think Disney would have the balls to do it. Can't really think of many Disney films where every main protagonist dies.

But I suppose thats me being picky haha
A proud Star Wars fan here saying: NOW THAT WAS A STAR WARS MOVIE. Forgive my honesty but I enjoyed more than The Force Awakens.
The cameos, oh the cameos. I loved that Red Leader (Garven Dreis ) and Gold Leader (Jon Vander) were part of the fighter squadrons in the Battle of Scarif. Also, surprised by R2 and 3PO.
The characters were commendable. Even though they all perished, they have won a place in my heart.
And the fighter battle and fights in the movie were top notch.
And of course who can forget the piece de resistance: Lord Vader himself. Until coming back and doing research, was I surprised that Vader's citadel was on Mustafar.
And his talk with Krennic, "Be careful not to choke on your aspirations director" My response: BADASS.
Near the end, when the troopers see the red saber glow and Vader, sheer brilliance.
So, I give Rogue One a seal of approval from a dedicated fan.
I just got back from the theaters. Rogue One easily became one of the best Star Wars movies so far, better than The Force Awakens in my opinion. It's easily the darkest Star Wars film I've ever watched. Yes, even darker than Han Solo's death and Order 66. I really wasn't expecting the whole main cast being killed off. I was just beginning to feel attached to some of the characters like K-2SO (Who is 100% better than C-3PO), Jyn, Chirrut etc.
What I didn't like about this movie is that it lacked lightsaber battles which makes it not feel like a Star Wars movie. Every movie had lightsaber battles, don't judge. An amazing movie, 9.5/10. Also, you wanna know what's sadder? I found out that Carrie Fisher died, after I watched that movie.
I have a question by the way:
Who is the actress who played Leia at the end of the movie? I want to believe it's Carrie Fisher but she looked old to do that. Did Disney hire someone who looked EXACTLY like Fisher?

Tarkin as well if you didn't notice already. You know "you may fire when ready." A lot of other characters like Gold Leader also made an appearance though they recycled A New Hope footage for that.
Just saw it last night, after Carrie Fisher died. Stayed through the end credits. The very last credit is a special thanks to Carrie Fisher, which of course, was there before she died, but is now more meaningful.

Rogue One is so much better than TFA.

the power of CGI my friend.

Pretty sure one of you guys might have said it already, but I got a very Halo Reach vibe from the film, for obvious reasons.
Vader's scene at the end was really nice, but the movie itself was average.

I recommend to Watch Nostalgia Critic's review of this movie It's really funny (but watch the movie first of course)
Brilliant.
I love it when combined with this.
