A film unlike any other. Lars Von Trier's Antichrist is one of my all time favorite contemporary films.

    enter image description here

One of the most deeply disturbing and moving movies I've ever seen, only featuring two actors for virtually the entire movie (save one scene in which a toddler is cast in the prologue sequence).

A complex film about grief, misery, and sexual horror the likes of which left many viewers shocked and angered. Yet it's also an artfully constructed movie written by von Trier while he was hospitalized after a traumatic depressive episode.

5: Let Me In/ Let the Right One In

    6: The Descent

  • Poltergeist

An excellent horror movie from top to bottom. It hits every mark perfectly, and although the effects are dated (face peeling scene) it still holds up 30 years later.

  • I think Silence of the Lambs is a pretty good contender for a high tier horror film. It rides the fine line between psychological horror and gross horror, while not over doing it like modern Hollywood Popcorn flicks tend to do.

  • You know, I never even thought of that as a horror film until right now. Its very cerebral, but it has all of the marks of a horror film. Good pick.

I never really saw it as a horror film but more of a psychological Thriller/Mystery

  • I can see where you are coming from, but there are definitely horror moments too. I would say it's a mix of both, really. But, yeah, I tend to like psychological horror movies more so than typical horror. Most horror movies nowadays are too cheesy and over the top.

  • I am extremely tempted to say Stranger Things, considering I just binged watched it yesterday and loved it immensely.

But my favorite horror movie is probably Saw 1. It had a creepy atmosphere and I loved the twist at the end. And probably because it was one of the first horror movie series that I followed as a kid.

When I was younger I saw the ending of this movie and it scarred me for five years. The ending was just so fucking scary. I literally started crying and I refused to sleep in my room by myself. But I got over it thankfully

  • Scream

I love the mystery aspect to it, even if that's lost when you rewatch it. Unfortunately, I think the series is dead after Wes Craven's passing.

  • Wes Craven? He is one of the reasons why I love A Nightmare on Elm Street.

  • Oh yeah, dammed. REC was damn scary too. I think the way they did the first person perspective makes it all the more immersive and scarier.

  • Jesus, that movie scared the shit out of me as a kid! I'm not so easily affected by horror now (unless it's smart and psychological horror, I end up finding most horror movies too cheesy nowadays), but back then, I was terrified to be in a room alone with a TV for several weeks after. :p

yeah... you weren't alone there. i'm seeing Rings (part 3) in the theatre next month. if it's as scary as the 1st one and way better than the 2nd, i have a feeling that fear is coming back for awhile.

  • The Thing (1982)

    The Fly (1986)

The Hour of the Wolf (1968)

Basically, anything where, even if there are monsters, the main drive of the film is the main character's paranoia, dread, and/or guilt.

Fade To Black (1980) Hard not to be my favorite when I'm friends with the leading lady.

Thanks for the recommendation, though it wasn't a remake, it was a prequel. The premise of the 1982 one was a lost Norwedgian expedition, and the 2011 one follows it. I thought it was relatively mediocre, the main problem being the executives' decision use CGI, even though the production had been planning on using practical effects. Here is what could have been:

  • Don't really have a favourite. Im more old school, i don't like the new horror movies and im not a fan of the supernatural movies like Conjuring and Paranormal Activity.
My favourites would have to be in no order

    • Halloween
    • Friday the 13th
    • Child's Play
    • A Nightmare on Elm Street
    • Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    • Scream
    • Psycho
    • The Invisible Man
    • Night of the Living Dead
    • Dawn of the Dead both sequel and remake
    • The Fog
    • Jaws
    • Alien
    • Terror on Tour
    • Cujo
    • Neon Maniacs
      Just a small list.
If anyone is a horror movie fanatic more slasher 70's 80's type, please PM, i'd love to chat with someone who shares the same interest because most of my mates either love comedies or marvel movies.

  • Wrong Turn, who could not love Cannibalistic mutated inbreds. :)

  • Alien or The Thing

  • The Babadook was the first time in a long time where I've been creeped out by a horror movie. It's definitely one of my favorites.

Cabin In The Woods is also a top contender for me. As is Let The Right One In and it's Hollywood remake.

  • These! Also, The (1988) Blob. Freaked me out as a youngster and the concept still creeps me out a little.
