Zotac GTX 1060 6GB versus MSI GTX 1060 3GB? Please Help me decide which to get?

I'm planning to buy a GTX 1060 card, I know the other one is 3GB while the other is 6GB.

*The MSI as far as what i've read in the internet has good reviews. and has OC
*However, the Zotac is 6GB and they say a 6GB version will have faster FPS by 10% for high end games like Tomb Raider, etc. Plus, The only store in our area had a price drop of it, which is cheaper by 20% from MSI's GTX 3GB.

here are the links:

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1060-3GT-OC.html
https://www.computershopper.com/components/reviews/zotac-geforce-gtx-1060-mini-6gb

Please help me, which one should i get? or, if you were the buyer, which one will you get, & why?
I'm buying to get a decent card that can run the latest AAA games that will be released at least until 5 years.

Thanks in advance

  • Unfortunately, I agree. Zotac are a low-end brand and 3 GB is too low if you're looking forward.

  • how about Palit GTX1060 Dual Fan 6GB?

  • Much better. That seems like a decent card. I'm not too familiar with the brand, but their reputation seems fairly good. You have the performance, the memory, the cooling, seems reliable. It checks the right boxes.

  • Good card and reviews...just remember that you need at least a 400 watt power supply to get the most out of it. And it does take up 2 slots because of the fans...just something to keep in mind.

  • by 400w, that means the total wattage that the psu has, right?
or is the 400w for the GPU only?
    i have a 700w PSU.
i'm sorry i'm a noob i don't know what they mean when they say "Recommended System Power Supply" in the card's spec

  • how about Radeon cards, i've seen cheaper prices of them, are they good? if yes, what would be the Radeon equivalent of nvidia's gtx 1060 6gb?

  • i'm eyeing on Gigabyte Radeon RX 580 Gaming 8GB Graphic Card.
A youtube review shows it has more FPS than GTX 1060 9GB. But how about the brand? is gigabyte any good?

  • Well I know them from mother boards...lemme check

  • Here is my issues with the 580 and the 1060....they are older now...I question how long they can keep doing good fps at high resolutions compared to the 1070ti and the 1080 or even the Vega 57(AMD) It may be in your interests to continue to gather money for a card that can truly last a few years. I just bought a new PC and well I went a little nuts...but it was a total upgrade...but I do feel sorta good about it...I am sure when it gets on my desk..I will feel WAY better.

  • I'd stick with Nvidia for GPUs. Radeon has had some compatibility issues with some games. If you're focusing on gaming, go Nvidia.

  • by the way guys, i was watching this review, and i think i'm leaning back to NVIDIA now, coz they say the RXs are bigger in size i think they said it occupies 2.5 slots.(compared to NVIDIA's 2 slots)

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=gNhvmP8yNE4

And the guy says, there's not much difference. only 3-6 FPS difference between the 6GB and the 3GB.

I'll only be playing at 1080p at most for the AAA Games Like Batman AK, or ROTR, or GTA V.So will the 3GB be enough? and If yes, how much drop will it loose when I use a screen recorder like MSI Afterburner?

  • I would really avoid the 3 gb...yes it is ok for now...but as newer games come out...you will want that additional 3 gb for insurance. Just because it is cheaper and is currently doing good in scores...just remember what games were doing a year ago....you say you want it to last 5 years...3 Gigs ain't going to work out in the long run.

Hey guys, how about this one,
    guru3d.com/articles-pages/msi-geforce-gtx-1060-aero-itx-review,5.html

They say msi is one of the top quality makers of graphics cards. but will the single fan be an issue?

Will it be better than the Zotac mini?

  • hi guys, sorry for the long reply. i eventually bought a gpu. the problem is, it doesn't have a VGA output.

I feel dumb asking this but i'm doing it anyway coz i have no idea how GPUs work,

Does the GPU affect the performance of the motherboard in terms of increasing its FPS in gaming? (Meaning, I can just plug my monitor to the motherboard's VGA output)

or do i need to connect directly to the GPU's video output (inorder to see the effect of the GPU's performance)?

  • you need to plug into the gpu...so you will need to update your monitor.

  • i think i'll just get a DVI-VGA Adapter.

  • Hi Guys, I'm having a bit of a problem. When i installed the new PSU and MSI Graphics card, and then connected the male VGA to the motherboard's VGA output, and turned on the PC, the monitor said, "No Signal."

Is this normal? I mean, does the GPU actually disable the motherboard's video output once it is connected to the motherboard's PCIe slot?

  • If you power up the computer and it doesn't beep menacingly at you, your hardware is working fine and connected properly. Same if the computer is running normally(you hear the fans going)... Usually, but let's just assume it's okay because...

To answer your first question, yes, most motherboards will set a GPU port as the primary port when it's connected. Some motherboards have an option in the BIOS to switch it, but that probably doesn't help you since you can't see anything with the GPU connected.

  • i guess i'll only find out when my adapter arrives. i was worried i messed up the hardware installation but i think i replaced every connection i took out from the old PSU with the new PSU's connections.

  • was my PSU the problem?

As long as your GPU(I don't know which model you bought) doesn't require a higher wattage than 650, your PSU is fine.

  • My GPU is MSI Geforce OC GTX 1060 3GB OC Dual Fan. I wasn't able to get the 6GB version :(

  • It only recommends 400W. 650 is more than enough. Don't worry about overloading it with that build. Throw another hard drive in there if you want to in the future. Increase the RAM(just make sure your motherboard is compatible with the type you buy, this one does matter). Point being, your PSU is good enough.

  • Ok Johro. thanks for the advises and tips i'll keep you posted once my adapter arrives.

  • Hey guys, just an update. but i think is a major issue. have you ever experienced lagging in Walking Dead A New Frontier? or is it just me? Just right at the start I noticed FPS drop at the Zombie Horde and while Javi is driving the van. I even turn everything to low and 1280x720 resolution.

  • What is your CPU?
I had laggs too because of G-Sync .
If you have G-Sync monitor turn it off.

  • I tested now the ANF.it is weird with 382.53 drivers it runs great but with the latest driver it has laggs.

  • You must sometimes delete the game and reinstall it or find for the settings file.
Maybe delete your save and start over.

  • Is it just in ANF?

    Intel i5

  • yes just ANF. Batman & Guardians run fine. or at least not noticeable (for Batman I only noticed it in the rain scene in episode 1 where he tries to enter Falcone Building.)

  • what driver is that? NVIDIA?

  • I don't know what G-Sync is. I can't find it in NVIDIA Control Panel. I can only see Vsync and I disabled it. Still getting the problem.

G-sync doesn't cause lag and only works on certain monitors(if I'm not mistaken, you are using an older monitor, so it shouldn't matter anyway). V-sync causes lag.

Edit: Some people whom were running the game at a higher refresh rate have found that locking it down to 60hz has helped.

  • I'll try that.

Do you set it in the Display Settings> Advanced Display Settings > Display Adapter > Monitor?
