Yesterday, I finished reading Threshold by Caitlin R. Kiernan. A horror novel blended with some dark fantasy, it takes a lot of inspiration from the works of Algernon Blackwood, most notably "The Willows," in that it mostly deals with nature. The writing style of Threshold is sort of stream-of consciousness. At times, it feels like a dream. It's set in Birmingham, Alabama. It deals a lot with paleontology, which I liked. The perspective jumps between several character characters as they figure out what to do about an ancient evil that has awakened under a nearby mountain. I wasn't terribly scared, but there were some well-crafted moments that got under my skin. Overall, I think it could have benefited from being longer, but I loved it. I plan to read the sequel.
I'm currently reading Ready Player One and it's sooooo gooood!
I recently finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I really love the series.
I'm really into Charles Bukowski right now. I've been a fan of his poetry for a long time but some kind people recommended me to check out his prose too. I've recently finished Ham on Rye and Post Office, reading Women at the moment.
The Darren Shan saga
Ppl talking shit on the internet. Yes, I keep in touch with modern day society ?
Srsly though i’ve been giving the goosebumps books a try
I'm reading metro 2033 in preparation for the new metro game, metro exodus.
Lord of the Rings and Percy Jackson are my two current favorite book series.
Been Reading "The Hitchhiker" by R L Stine. But i've been thinking about doing a Reread of A Song Of Ice And Fire, once i get my Illustrated Copy of A Game Of Thrones. Then i'll do my Reread lol.
Currently reading Pet Semetary by Stephen King. Someone on the forum recommended it to me, and it's really good.
I read the first two Percy Jackson books and I loved them! But, I haven't gotten a chance to read any of the others yet.
I'm currently reading Miss Paregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Random Riggs, Scythe by Neal Shusterman and book three of the Uglies series Specials by Scott Westerfeld. That's right I read a lot.???
"Saga" by Vaughan and Staples. Cool comic series. Violence, sex coarse language, people with horns or wings and robots with tv set for head.
I've been reading Zombie Exodus by Jim Dattilo recently with my boyfriend. It's an interactive novel we settled on when we failed to find a zombie book that interested us. So far we've been enjoying taking turns reading a page out loud, sipping on tea, and discussing our next move in the zombie apocalypse. Our survivor is a female named Kate who used to be a soldier. We want to read Tin Star by Allen Gies after we get finished with Zombie Exodus. It's another choose your own adventure novel that's set in the old west.
Dividing my time between 12 Rules For Life by Dr. Jordan Peterson and A Debt Against the Living: An Introduction to Originalism by Ilan Wurman.
For a social studies book club, I read We Should Hang Out Sometime: Embarrassingly, a True Story by Josh Sundquist. The author recounts his adolescent relationships to figure out why he's never had a girlfriend. It's full of awkwardness, but since I greatly prefer secondhand embarrassment to firsthand, I enjoyed that aspect, along with the writing style, which was easily digested and funny. Overall, I'm mixed on it. It's gets repetitive in the second half, and it's kind of wrapped up in these gross mannerisms, like the explanation behind the title—We should hang out sometime, as oppose to, Do you want to hang out?—it's the author's go-to thing to say to get people to agree to see him again, because it's kind of something that we're socially ingrained not to say no to, which seems manipulative. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the book club discussion of it.
Dose anyone here watch any booktube? If your a book lover and you don't watch any you really should, it so much fun!
This is my favorite book tuber.
You should check out the Demonata series if you haven't already. Great books.
Warsaw 1944: The Fateful Uprising by Alexandra Richie. Super grim and depressing but really interesting too. Reading something a bit lighter too, Crooked House by Agatha Christie. First book I've read of hers but definitely gonna be reading some more.
...
Can anyone give me any good horror novels recommendations that are modern day and perferably Lovecraft inspired?
The Deep, by Nick Cutter, is the most recently published book inspired by Lovecraft that I've read. It gets a mixed reception, like most of the Cutter books, but despite their flaws, I always find myself invested in the characters and the outcomes of the stories. Forewarning, The Deep is pretty gross at times.
You might look into the work of Caitlin R. Kiernan. Her novel Threshold is very much inspired by Algernon Blackwood, whose work could be seen cosmic horror with a more naturalist tilt. It's semi-sequel, Low Red Moon, which is better than its predecessor, is basically a Lovecraftian werewolf novel.
Though I haven't read anything by Laird Barron, I hear his work is incredibly close to that of Lovecraft.
Appreciate it, I’ll look into these.
people STILL read?! Lol
People still say lol?!?
People still use the “?” emoji?!?
Yes, yes, and yes.
I'll been reading a ton of novels for school this coming year. Call of the Wild, Tom Sawyer, At the Sign of the Beaver, and Johnny Tremain are the ones I've done so far. All of them are very good books (and definitely classics).
EDIT: for those of you curious enough to look up Johnny Tremain, do ignore the ratings. People obviously do not know it is a historical fiction book for younger audiences. I mean, heck, look at this great (and unfortunately real) book review by an obvious intellectual:
"I hated this book!!!! if u read this book you will become boring and old!
this book pulls you into a wrinkled old time of so-called "action"!!! i could have
found more action by going to a retirement home and watching the 900 year old people play bingo!!!!!! i of course was forced against my will to read this,
otherwise, i wouldnt go spitting distance of it!!!! if you enjoyed this book
(mr.flegar) then you are boring old!! do not read this thing! it's a plague!
save yourselves!!!!!!!!"
I read despacito 1 and I'm excited for the second.
