I don't know which writer said it, but his words were: "Kill your darlings". And I kind of agree really - TWD wouldn'd be all doom and gloom if the protagonist himself bit the dust. That really drives the point in: the world sucks. Hard.
And as bad as it was to see Lee die since I liked him, I could never say he is the best character ever, not even in the TWDTG universe. He IS kind of bland, which I guess is done on purpose to balance the more colorful characters like Lilly and Kenny. And if you start comparing him to some people you can meet and even play as in other games, then he disappears in their shadows. But he was a good character, but for reasons people might not think of: he was essentially a container that the player could fill with his responses and thus form his personality (to a certain extent - there were limits).
I think topic author meant Lee was the best PLAYABLE character ever. It's not the same to compare Lee with Kenny or other character. I just can't imgaine another S2 Character, so i want him to survive somehow... After all we have been through... You just can't kill of main characters like that...
Sure, I agree that loosing Lee was a kick in the nuts, but I think it drove home the point that the world is a sucky place. And yes, you can kill characters like that - TTG has shown that they are well capable of writing well thought-out characters that we love to hate, love to love and hate to love (got all that?). Having Lee survive would just dull the entire experience and make the entire idea silly.
Besides, to use another cliché: The good ones die young.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I thought Lee's character and personality was rather.. forgettable.
And this is why I loved him so much. He was just a normal guy, trying to survive and look after his group. I think this was intentional really as I'm pretty sure a lot of us had become attached to our Lee and, after all, The Walking Dead is known for it's realistic portrayal of human survival.
The real reason why people love Lee is because he is the gamer. You are Lee. Every time I made a decision that resulted in death of another character it was like a personal failure. When he died I felt like I failed, failed to keep my self alive and failed to stay by Clementine's side and protect her. This is why he is the best character ever he provokes emotion in the gamer. Now this summer I played 400 days..while it was ok it left me not feeling any connections to any of the character's except for Vince which I have a feeling while be the playable character this season. We might just play as Wyatt as well.

Yep. I think it is easier to become attached to characters who are more emotionally stable and "normal"
I also played 400 Days, and the only reason I could not fully connect to any of the characters was simply because we did not see enough of them. I did however love Shel's story (I too have a younger sister so I can relate) and I hope we get to see a lot more of her in S2.

However, each character of 400 days DLC was much more interesting than Lee. I'm pretty sure that new playable character will be better than its predecessor.
P.S. Yes, it's would be great if Shel will be is Season 2, I like her.

Remind me to drop you three times when I'm playing the Walking Dead again .

" The game won't be same without Lee " - It's doesn't mean that game will be worse.

Kill your darlings, period.

Totally agree, with Marumochi. I have the same feeling about Lee.

Ahem i believe the best character is hershel, obviously lol but really lee was awesome.
Yes you are Hersh! I could take or leave Shel. She's such a bore. I'm hoping to see something resembling an actual personality in season two.
I KNEW IT! too bad Shawn dies in 10 seconds he was pretty cool too.
Lee Everett is one of those characters you'll never forget. A hero, like Gordon Freeman for instance.
