Is it Dangerous to Get Attached?

edited February 2014 in The Walking Dead

During Season One of Telltale Games 'The Walking Dead' the game was praised by critics and fans alike of how easy and well it was to attach to different characters all for different reasons and really testing players on how they feel about certain characters (Heck how many of us hated Larry's guts only to not kill him when we had the chance during Episode 2). With that in mind many people were saddened when their favorite characters would die.

Now that we've already faced tremendous losses (Omid and Lee) - Do you think it's dangerous to get attached to other characters such as Christa, or perhaps the new characters like Luke, Pete, Nick, Alvin, etc.

Now this isn't saying the characters won't be developed or good enough to get attached to but if the player should avoid having to do that in order to not feel any more sadness or pain. Discuss your thoughts.

  • Well since it still is a zombie apocolypse and it still is a Telltale game, ofcourse it's dangerous to get attached. That's what this game is all about. Getting to know and love the characters and knowing the fact they could die any minute.

If we completely skipped season 1 could we saved ourselves from all sad feels at the ending. If never played so we never met ben could we of saved a lot of lives these questions must be asked

  • Attachment is dangerous, yeah, but it's only human to do so.

Sadness and pain are inevitable, so I'd rather get to know someone before they died rather than alienate myself from them just because they might die.

If you feel so much pain and you are almost always very sad about it, then it's dangerous and unhealthy, but I don't think that somebody would feel that much pain and sadness because of video game character.

  • I understand that, and like I said this is a good thing for the game - However do you think people got attached way too easily to characters in Season One (Not to say they weren't very well developed, they all were) and should Season One teach us as a player that we should be more wary and careful about characters before trusting them for whatever type of story.

This isn't bad, in fact it's good. It shows telltale are good at keeping players on edge, and causing them to change and adapt to suit the new story that will come in place. But I just wanted to see what other people thought about this.

  • Yeah, I'd say so. Everyone got attached to Lee and, well, tears were had by all.

Well...yes that's what makes this game series so great. Making people care about the characters and their releationships. I can't wait for episode 2 to be released. Not only because i wanna find out who the mysterious " i thought you were dead " person is, but also because i wanna find out if my decision to save good old uncle Pete pays of.

  • The only character I'm attached to so far is Clem. I honestly couldn't get into anyone in ATR (or as I like to call them, 'those assholes in the cabin').

I just didn't think they were all that interesting. I only care about what happens to Clementine.

  • What about good old uncle Pete? Don't you feel attached to him? Because i do.

  • Yeah, it's pretty dangerous to get attached to anyone in this series. But if you don't, the game kind of loses some of its magic. Being hurt when a character dies is part of the experience that made Season 1 so memorable.

  • I never said or implied that you could feel sadness that is both dangerous or unhealthy because of a video-game character. I simply said 'sadness' and this can be applied to all different types of media.

  • Hmm...for me it does and it doesn't. It does because well you summed it up perfectly it's memorable and nice to be attached however it doesn't cause the game to lose some of it's "magic" because you are always on edge trying to see what the writers or doing or what will happen next which only makes the experience more enjoyable as you have to question yourself whether you trust a character enough for a certain part of the game and whatnot.

  • I like him just fine, and I like Luke as well. I just don't really care about what happens to them; I'm not invested all that much in their storylines.

  • hopefully link works... havent done a vid yet/before.

Anyway, if you feel nothing for the characters or what they go through, there is no point in playing a game like this, where the story is the game, rather than you have a goal and kill anything that gets in your way. If you dont get involved with the characters (some fans gets a little too involved) then you miss out on what could have been some really touching moments. Its the moments of loss that we are confronted by just how we liked or hated a character. As was said with larry, even those that hated him may not have been on board to kill him. You may not like him, but there was still a connection and people didnt want him to go out like that. End of the world shows up, and the strongest guy u come across is layed out by a weak heart and a block of salt lick. Even if you thought it was necessary, its still not a pleasant way to have to kill somebody, if such a thing exists...

  • Mean but hilarious. They should put little quotes at the bottom "I didn't do it!" --Ben Paul rofl

  • I think it just has become harder for most people here to get attached again, we all have been though Season1 already and getting attached to the characters there was easyer for us, because it was all new to us.

Yes, it's dangerous to get attached and I think many people will try to not get attached to any of the new characters, but I don't know how much you can really control it...

Only a few characters from the group survived at the end of episode 5.

Clementine, Christa (attacked, possibly dead as of S2E1), Omid (dead as of S2E1), and Kenny (assumed dead as of S1E5)

It's likely that most of the characters we know about now will end up dead by the end of the season

  • If you are playing this game evading the feels, you are quite frankly not playing it right.

  • Ah the age old question, I think a quote will suffice.

'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.'

  • We can only hope...
