I have a history with many of the stereotypical qualities of a nerd, or rather a first generation geek. I began playing video games on the Atari 2600 in the early eighties, then I began learning to program computers. There was no internet and home computers were very rare. I read science fiction and fantasy books. I played dungeons and dragons. But no one ever called me a nerd or geek. I wasn't an outgoing extroverted kid but I had friends everywhere...rednecks, jocks, student government association, drama class, stoners and partyers, popular kids...I got along with everybody. Nobody messed with me.
Now...I'm still the same person. But now, I know why everyone left me alone. It turns out that everybody thought I was weird. Evidently, weird is a progressive disease because now I'm out of my fucking head.
There's a difference between nuts and weird.
