Who's your Hero?

I have no idea if someone has posted this yet (Hell, I bet even I posted this at some point, IDK), But I'd love to know who some of your Heroes, Role Models, Etc. are! There are a lot of awesome people in this world who have done some awesome things, and Some of us look up to those people.

I'll go first.... Eh hem, My hero is Rebecca Sugar. Rebecca Sugar is 28 years old, and is the Main writer, animator, and song writer for Steven Universe. She also composed some things for Adventure Time (as well as writing some episodes of it), and Created the New Cartoon Network show, "We Bare Bears". Rebecca is my hero, purely because of all the amazing things she's done in just 28 years of her life, Her writing's amazing, her animation style is awesome, her singing is heavenly, Rebecca is just one of those rare people that purely exist to ensure that humanity's still got a fighting chance. Not to mention, Steven Universe tackles topics that no cartoon would be brave enough to tackle. Rebecca Sugar is a huge inspiration to me, and my hero. (Jesus, I feel like a kid in 2nd grade talking about my Dad/Mom and how they're my hero)

Going to be honest, I'm pretty awesome...In fact we all are. If I ever need to look up to someone I look in the mirror and realize how strong I am and it keeps me going even further.

Didn't know you were such a narcissist. Seems unlike you.

(If you haven't realized, I'm completely joking. You know, just in case.)

  • Naw, I'm not a narcissist, I realize there are several dozens of things wrong with me but I do realize when there's good things too.

  • Well, you know what they say.

    Confidence is key.

  • I don't have a role model or feel the need to have one because I don't want to look up at someone and say I wanna be like him or the next version of him, I would rather be more unique and be known for my own accomplishments or being me or being special in a way no one else could.

I swear i'm going to look back on these comments months from now and think of myself as super cringey.

  • My great-uncle. Old guy basically raised me, pretty much entirely responsible for the person I am today. Danish resistance fighter in WW2, later Royal Danish Navy, and later a dog-sled trainer in Finland for his later years in secluded retirement.

Dude's a badass. 97 and still kicking too, which is surprising given all the cigars he's smoked on a near-daily basis.

  • That's exactly what I wanted to say. Kind of.

  • I'd have to say my grandma. She is the nicest and most caring person and I love her more than anything in the world. I try to live my life like her by being nice to people and doing things for others. I'd have to say without her I would probably not be here.

  • Your uncle must be one hell of a dude. I see why you look up to him.

I'm going to be honest, I don't think it's a good idea to idealize anyone. In fact, I think it can be a very dangerous thing to do! Why? Because everyone has faults, and everyone has their bad side, and if you blind yourself to that fact, it will lead to huge disappointment for you.

So instead of idealizing other people, my advice would be to focus on making yourself the very best you can be, to be the best version of yourself.
See people for what they are, both the good and the bad, and try to focus on their good points.
If someone chooses not to act in a good and honorable way, if someone chooses not to act in good character, even after you've advised them against a certain course, well then thats on them.
Don't let their wrong decisions drag you down!
Instead focus on what you do as a person, as you are the only one who can control your actions, and are responsible for said actions.

  • I don't have a hero. I have people (few at best) I respect, and appreciate, but I can't think of anyone I regard as worthy of hero status.

  • I ain't got none. Here's a song by Foo Fighters for ye:

  • That's a pretty great way to think about it. Sadly, I, as a person, am a lost cause. Not ever gonna be "good", because I simply can't, and in fact, won't be good. So that mentality died for me. But there are people I respect and look up to, not Idolizing them, but I respect them and I am inspired by them. So that's what I'll do.

  • Major General Smedley Butler

    http://fair.org/new/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/smedley-butler.jpg

Butlers served in the Marine Corps for 28 years, where he distinguished himself on battlefields from The Philippines to the Western Front, winning two Medals of Honor in the process.

He eventually retired and began a career in activism. In 1932, he stood up for disenfranchised veterans (the bonus army) during the Great Depression. In 1933, he exposed the Business Plot a corporatist conspiracy to overthrow the American government and replace it with a fascist dictatorship. In 1935, he authored 'War Is a Racket', a searing indictment against America's imperialist 'Banana Wars' and corporate war-profiteers.

He was heavily criticized and ridiculed for pretty much all these things, but Butler was never one to abandon his position, on or off the battlefield. History vindicates him as a courageous, principled and loyal man, but I don't think he gets anywhere near the amount of recognition that he deserves.

Respectfully, you are only a lost cause if you choose to be.
You can be whatever you choose to become!
If you want to be successful, then make decisions that will lead you to be successful.
Same goes for the type of person you want to be.

If you think youre predestined to be like this, I would say, again respectfully, that you're wrong.
In my opinion, there is no such thing as fate.
How our futures turn out, borrowing unforseen circumstances, is dependant on us.

  • That's pretty much my mentality. I don't consider myself to be good for anything and even if there are some rare things at which I'm at least somewhat good, there are always people who can and will do them way better than I'd ever be able to.

    Cheers for a lost cause.

With all due respect, and I'm not saying that you do this, but sitting around and surfing the web all day is not going to bring you closer to anything that is worthwhile in life.
In order to get somewhere in life, you have to be willing to work for it, to put some effort out.

If you are 16 years of age or older, that I would recommend personally that you find some part time work, as it will help you to do three things:

1- Will put cash in your pocket, which I recommend saving so that you can buy yourself a car/truck.

2 - Will help to learn how to work, which is something you need to learn how to do, as no-one is gonna give you a free ride.
Being able to take care of yourself is your responsibility, no-one else's.

3 - It will help to boost your self-esteem, thereby making you a happier person.
No-one can do that for you, only you can.

You don't have to give me "all due respect", really. I pretty much know that already. I currently study in college (well, university, but it's college all the same around where I live), so I don't have a lot of time for working, even if part-time. It's good advice, nevertheless, but it's just that the work I may find can at this point be either 3 things:

    1. It's long hours (would interfere with my studies) and/or not worthwhile in terms of pay.
    2. It's something that I have no skills for doing.
    3. Something I have skills for, but lack experience/qualification (in this case it's translation/interpreting).

Believe me, I wouldn't mind working because having no money obviously sucks but I lack the time and, sadly, the opportunity to do what I can actually do pretty well (again, talking about translating. Nobody'd hire me over a guy with full university education and 10 years of living, for example, in the US).
