Other Classic Adventure Games to play whilie waiting!?

I'm totally in the point and click zone! I'm going to try out Gabriel Knight 1 first, even Domenic Armato recommended it.

Besides the classic Lucasarts titles we have ALL surely played, what should I check out? Simon the Sorcerer? Broken Sword? Has anything more modern turned some heads?

Syberia 1 and 2, if your PC can handle it.

I've noticed alot of people on this forum don't like it, but I personally enjoyed Runaway.

Of course there's all the famous oldies you can play too, they've been mentioned plenty of times in similar threads around the forum.

I'd recommend all 3 Gabriel Knight games. They're all created in different styles and each have their good and bad points (1 is point & click, 2 uses fmv & point n click and 3 is in 3D).

Definitely play the first 2 Simon the Sorcerer (Simon 3D is ok and there's a lot of mixed views on Simon 4) & Broken Sword games (Broken Sword 3 & 4 aren't bad, they've got good stories but the move to 3D isn't perfect). Some older games are now freeware which you should look into, namely Lure of the Temptress, Beneath A Steel Sky & Flight of the Amazon Queen (the first two were created by the same people who made the Broken Sword games - in fact they were their first 2 games).

Other games to look at are: The Longest Journey (and to a lesser extent it's sequel Dreamfall), Syberia 1 & 2, Toonstruck (I liked it!) and the Discworld series (1, 2 & Noir).

There are plenty of others but those are the better ones I can think of now.

thank you so much for those recommendations, exactly what i was looking for!

I've just realised that I tend to use way too many parentheses in my posts (is that a bad thing, I forget?)

Syberias amazing, both of them, a third is now in the works...

"The Longest Journey" might very well be the highest rated adventure game of all time, let me tell you it is frigging amazing... try that, then its sequel "Dreamfall"...

Try "Runaway: A Road Adventure", that was a lot of fun as well...

There are a lot of obvious fits if you want something similar to MI, but maybe one that got lost in the awesomeness of that early 90s adventure game boom was Freddy Pharkas...
  • edited July 2009
Freddy Pharkas! I bought it off eBay so many years ago and never got around to playing it!

Lure of the Temptress, Beneath A Steel Sky & Flight of the Amazon Queen (the first two were created by the same people who made the Broken Sword games - in fact they were their first 2 games). .

I whole heartedly agree with these games. A must-play for point and click.

Try Broken Sword 1 and 2, Beneath a Steel Sky, Space Quest IV and V and The Longest Journey.

Hmm... since someone mentions about the freecode, I think this should be the right place to post.

I have a free coupon code with me and I'm at a dilemma. Should I use it on episode 1 of Wallace & Grommit or should I use it on episode 1 of Bone?

p.s. Not considering Strong Bad or Sam & Max, as I will be getting the entire pack come end of the year.
  • edited July 2009
Personally W&G is funnier....... Bone was sort of ZZZZZzzzzzz for me.
  • edited July 2009
Thankee for the suggestion. Getting W&G at the moment.

Yeah! More adventuring before episode 2.

I was going to suggest The Longest Journey, but some highly cultured and discerning gamer already brought up that particular masterpiece.

Beyond Good and Evil is an excellent game, too.
  • I'd recommend all 3 Gabriel Knight games. They're all created in different styles and each have their good and bad points (1 is point & click, 2 uses fmv & point n click and 3 is in 3D).

To add to this... 1 and 3 have Tim Curry... With a New Orleans accent.

1 has the voice talents of Michael Dorn (Worf from Star Trek:Next Gen)

3 has John de Lancie (Q of TNG fame).

    :D

    Need I say more?

Get yourself Ben There, Dan That and Time Gentlemen Please. These are point and click adventures very much in the old Lucasarts style.
  • Oh! Also! Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist! <3
  • Well there are many good old ones, and the revival of Monkey Island has really raised the interest for adventuregames.

I loved Toonstruck, which I havent played for years because I cannot find out how to run it on windows xp :(:(:( (anyone know how??)

But try to look at this link: http://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/

Most of those games are golden oldies point and click (of course not Larry which is more a type/text game but still great fun).

    Have fun

Well, I already used up my free game on Strongbadia the Free, and I've recently began playing Broken Sword for the first time. It's not bad so far...

I really enjoyed Still Life. I heard they have a sequel and a prequel (sort of), but I haven't played those so I can't recommend them. Regardless, Still Life is a visually amazing game, along the lines of Syberia and Syberia 2, but darker.

I highly recommend Leisure Suit Larry 3. The first two are amusing romps, but the third surprises by being a damn good adventure game.

    I don't recommend LSL 5, though.

    Broken swort 1+2
    Discworld
The Longest Journey (I would call it a classic by now) + Dreamfall (not a classic but nevertheless good)
Gabriel knight 1+2+3 an absolute must one of the pinnacles of adventure gaming
    The Leisure Suit Larry adventures
    Space Quests Series
The entire Tex Murphy Series (now rereleased on GOG)

If you are in for really great stuff and dont mind playing text adventures, pretty much everything infocom has released is a classic and also the old Legend Entertainment adventures, especially the Meretzky Spellcasting games. (A mockery on Harry Potter 10 years before Harry Potter was written :D)

Syberia 1 and 2, if your PC can handle it.

I fulheartedly agree. I'm so happy to hear about a third one coming.

Agathe Christie's And Then There Were None was a very enjoyable play. Not too hard, though, but fun.

Also, if you like difficult puzzles with good plot Keepsake (a little older) is fun, though it feels like not a lot of people have heard of it.

I also like Mystery Island because there are multiple solutions to problems so you can keep replaying to try and figure out all the different ways to overcome obstancles.

Essentially, there are really only two companies I consistantly buy games from at this point. Telltale and the Adventure Company. Let me know if you find any other good point and click adventure game companies. (I'm considering LucasArts, but I think I need to see something good/new/not-Starwars or Indiana Jones come from them, first.)

Deck 13, Ank 1+2 and the 1.5 (3) were really good games, I am not sure however how the english translations worked out (usually a game is somewhat crippled by translations).
Jack Keane however is a love or hate thing, I have not played it yet but i heard mixed opinions about it.

Hey i loved Toonstruck actually recently at my pc. Beleive me it aint easy to run it on windows xp. I used DOSbox freeware. I can help you if you want.

Well there's a bunch of oldies but goodies on steam right now. www.steampowered.com
The Dig is a special favorite of mine, one I haven't played in 12 years. I've been waiting for a WinXP(and up) compatible version somewhere and now it's finally out. That alongside the Indiana Jones games and Loom is good for hours and hours of Lucas Arts adventure goodness.

One that isn't really a classic is A Vampyre Story (http://www.vampyrestory-game.com/) made also by/with some Lucas Arts/Monkey Island/The Dig devs. I haven't played it myself, but other Monkey Island lovers seem to like it and what I've seen myself was pretty decent.

Not old school but I recommend " So Blonde" it's by the writer of Broken Sword 1 & 2 Steve Ince, and has a good dose of MI references.
I'll secound the Simon the sorcerer and revolution recommendations too. =D

Seconded... Discworld II was probably slightly better if my memory serves me.

Does anyone remember Kingdom O' Magic?

Anyone ever play Snatcher? It's a Japanese adventure game from Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid).

Yeah, but only ever played the demo. I've been intermittently looking for the full game somewhere but no luck which is a shame as I loved the demo.

I picked it up randomly at the time in the sale, it was pretty good but I think I got stuck somewhere and I didn't know where to get an walkthrough so I ended up giving up. Apparently it doesn't work on modern machines but someone is trying to remake it here...
