I picked it up randomly at the time in the sale, it was pretty good but I think I got stuck somewhere and I didn't know where to get an walkthrough so I ended up giving up. Apparently it doesn't work on modern machines but someone is trying to remake it here...

Beneath a Steel Sky is definitely worth playing, it runs on ScummVM and it's freeware now :)

Another recommendation for Gabriel Knight 1, too. GK3 has one of the most ludicrous opening puzzles ever made, but get passed it because the rest of the game is really satisfying to play.

Magnetic Scrolls' 'Wonderland' is a simply fabulous piece of text adventuring, if you're up for that.

If you've got a DS, Phoenix Wright is one of the best adventure games I've played till Tales of Monkey Island (plus, it's really funny)

If you have a DS you should already have played :
Professor Layton and the Curious Village

In fact you should buy or borrow a DS for that game ^^

Yes, the three Phoenix Wright games are brilliant :D

I'll probably replay So Blonde in the near future. Never had the time to finish it, but it was a funny adventure game.

I've heard that's a good game, but that's more puzzles then Point and click.

Yep but I find it hard to believe that someone who likes point & click don't like puzzles & enigmas ;)

In any case, if you have a DS I strongly recommend it to you

No one has mentioned Simon the Sorcerer? Great game very much inspired by Monkey Island, I strongly recommend the the first one starring Chris Barrie!

And I'm sure it's available for free as abandonware too.

How about Star Trek: 25th anniversary for the Nintendo (not the one that came out for the PC a year later with the exact same title). I thought that game was underrated.

I can't believe I forgot about the Star Trek games: 25th Anniversary (pc version in this case), Judgement Rites & A Final Unity - the 1st two are based on the original series and the last one on the next generation.

Yeah those are the ones I remember, I had 25th Anniversary for my Amiga 1200, it was painfully slow even when HD installed

It's not free, but you can buy it cheap at gog.

    A Vampyre Story
is suppossed to be pretty great. (I just ordered it from Amazon) so I can't give you an actual review but the Amazon reviews looks great and it seems to have won several awards.

It's an adventure game from Bill Tiller, who's responsible for the artwork and such from COMI.

His company is Autumn Moon Entertainment

On a side note: it looks like he has his own piratey adventure coming soon, inspired by his wish to work on another Monkey Island game, per his blog.

Also, like others, i recommend Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 that can be played on ScummVM.
(GoG sells them reasonably cheap. While you may be able to find an abandonware version somewhere, GoG sells the full "talkie" version of the game.)

If you feel like going on your own pirate buried treasure hunt, try and pick up copies of the Original Adventures, if you missed any of them, or would like to play them again.
I highly recommend Grim Fandango. (make sure you patch it before ou play it on a modern PC)
All of these LucasArts games are wonderful and memorable.

ScummVM hosts freeware versions of 'Beneath a Steel Sky', 'Flight of the Amazon Queen' and 'Lure of the Temptress', knowing that the first one is often highly recommended.

I'm going to reasonably assume you've already devoured the Telltale library of games.

Other than that, head over to Adventure Gamers and see if anything strikes you. Many of the games recommended in this excellent thread are available there for digital download.

Great game, yes! With logical puzzles, a fascinating dark story and a really surprising ending.

Kyrandia 3 was fun, I hope it will run with the DOS box.

The subtitled version is also included. (just bought it)

id deffinitly recommend gabriel knight games - ive always been a fan of fmv games and gk2 did it really well without sacrificing puzzle quality and game play, other games that did fmv well are tex murphy games go to gog.com to get them all. especially the pandora directive and under a killing moon, pandora is generally considered the best in the series.

haha i was just about to edit my post and recommend that - if you like lots of horror and gore the original is a great game. a bit quick and easy but scared me to death when i was younger lol. phantasmagoria 2 wasnt quite as scary as the original but still has its fair share of extreme gore and controversial stuff and is an enjoyable romp while it lasts. 2 of the best bad games ive played! i say best bad games as technchically there not very good, short, easy and really bad acting!

Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive are two of the best adventures ever made, and both are on GOG now.

another cool p&c adventure game in the style of monkey island and simon the sorcerer would be the late "chewy: esc from f5" (1997) ... and "the feeble files" is good too

I'm not sure if any one noticed, but Lucas Arts released The Dig, Loom, and others on Steam: link.

Damn I just remembered two of my favorites.

Discworld, which is excellent and hard as hell (I haven't played it in a long time, but I remember having to pull my hair)
Discworld II, is pretty good too, and looks really good.

They're both funny as hell. Well I'm biased I love Terry Pratchett...

I think these are really underrated.
