We can't play as AJ because the game can't go further then the comics and since that is the case, the oldest AJ will be is 3 Years old.
What Lee Everett said, AJ can't be older than 3 due to the comics, and besides, people got pissed off about a 16 month time skip, imagine the backlash if they did a time skip of several years. I'd much rather play as Clementine again.
I want to play as AJ, I would only watch. I won't have to make difficult choices, or even talking.

Seems like a nice break from hard decisions, to be honest.

Playing as AJ would be possible... but unlikely. Nobody has explored what has happened to the Zombie Apocalypse past 5-6 years from the incident (or outside of USA for that matter).
If Telltale pushed it and put you in control of the 6-year old, then it would exceed the authors' timeline, which I don't think Telltale will do.
Just for record, Carl in the comics starts out with 7 and ends up with 13 years old.
Clem starts with 8 and ends up with 11.
Having AJ with at least 6 years old would mean 9-10 years after the Zombie Apocalypse. It would definitely be interesting, but again, unlikely.
