He was stationed as a private in the Colony of Vietnam under the French government, and not during the Vietnam war. He was later transferred back to France (gaining the rank Captain sometime in between) and then killed during the German invasion of France in WWII.
Probably too convoluted to be the right answer, but there is my guess.
He was a Captain in World War II and a Private in Vietnam.
He was shot in both wars, but died in World War II.
(I'm crossing out wrong answers here)
Dr. Who
When I was really young I played a whole lot of Professor Layton and that lead to me becoming the master of riddles (u_u) I have a kind of easy one (which came from a history book about Vikings and I never forgot it)~
In comes two legs carrying one leg, lays down one leg on 3 legs. Out comes two legs in comes four legs out goes five legs in comes two legs. Picks up 3 legs throws it a four legs and brings back one leg.

An arm points north, east, south, then west.
Ever in circles, never pausing to rest.
It passes its brother twenty three times,
As the sun passes by and the moon starts to climb.

With potent, flowery words speak I,
Of something common, vulgar, dry;
I weave webs of pedantic prose,
In effort to befuddle those,
Who think I wile time away,
In lofty things, above all day
The common kind that linger where
Monadic beings live and fare;
Practical I may not be,
But life, it seems, is full of me!

There is a normally arranged house. Every wall of this house is north from the center of the house. How is this possible?
Yeah, someone told me that few years ago. I don't remember details but three legs was a stool. Man punished dog for stealing something. Brutal.
House may belong to Kanye West and his slutty woman. They named their daughter North.

Is it at the North pole?? I heard a similar one...
A house has 4 walls all facing south. A bear walks by the house. What colour is the bear?
The answer is white because it is a polar bear
