Rate Monkey Islands: Best to Worst

So, where would everyone put Tales in their obligatory anal listing of Monkey Island: Best to Worst (or - Greatest to Least Great)?

After 1.2 plays of Tales I'd rate them in the following order:

1. MI1 SOMI
2. MI3 COMI
3. MI6 TOMI
4. MI2
5. The other one.

What about you guys?

1,3,4,2, TOMI is coming in second right now but i don't want to put it in 'till it's done. What if episode two is a stinker?

    1. SOMI These first
    2. COMI games
    3. MI2 are pure nostalgia :)
    4. TOMI (A little early to rate the whole game, but Screaming Narwhal episode felt like a real Monkey Island game, Excellent Comeback for the series IMHO)
    5. EFMI (For me this was for Monkey Island what Phantom Menace was for Star Wars, not utter shit but it didn't feel right)

Rating TMI in comparison to the others is silly. And EMI is still a great game - it's the worst in a great series meaning it's still quality.

MI2-nothing has or ever will come close imo. pure class
CMI-stunning artwork, replayed alot more than the others
TMI-providing the puzzles get harder, shaping up to be a classic
    SMI
    EMI

    1. Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge - Adventure gaming perfection.
    2. The Secret of Monkey Island - It is where we all fell in love.
    3. Curse of Monkey Island - Attractive and funny but too many elements are derivative of the first 2 games.

    758. Escape from Monkey Island - Fuck Escape from Monkey Island

Can't rates Tales yet because it is incomplete but if the first episode is any indication it could probably push COMI to 4th place.

Im putting tales somewhere between CoMI and MI1. So far its better than MI1, but can't match CoMI. But hey its only 1/5 of the way done, can't be too quick to judge.

    1. CoMI
    2. MI2
    3. Tales
    4. MI1

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge suffers from very few flaws. It has some obscene puzzle design for a LucasArts adventure, but it's nowhere near as bad as a Sierra or Infocom classic. And it does so much else just perfectly. It's just an amazing piece of work.

I'd say that Secret of Monkey Island goes next. It does a lot more right. It's not bogged down with exposition at the start. There's "I want to be a pirate!" and a general pointing towards the right direction. You aren't given a long intro movie like Day of the Tentacle, you're dropped straight into the world and told where to go. From there, you're given a lot of freedom of exploration. From there, the puzzles aren't too bad but also great brain teasers, and the overall sense of adventure and an overall story wows you in such a ludicrous game.

Monkey Island 3 is next, but a definite step or two below the classic originals....with flaws like character animation, not having the right feel fro a Monkey Island game, and an overly cartoon style in many places. It's like I picked up Day of the Tentacle rather than Monkey Island, and that's by no means a compliment. And the sailing game is tedious. Still, it gets a lot right, the backgrounds and music are beautiful, and the story does ramp up near the end. Puzzle design isn't always perfect, but usually good or great. Voice casting is great, and it is quality work too. Overall it's a solid, fantastic adventure.

Few will disagree with dropping Escape on the bottom, so I don't feel like I should elaborate.

Oh, and I'm gonna wait until the Season is over to stick Tales in. However, from what I've played it has a lot of potential. I could see it surpassing Curse easily, and Secret with a good bit of difficulty.

    2>5>3>1>4 for me.

Monkey Island 2 is still my gold standard for reasons that I am unable to explain. It's not really the puzzles or the graphics... Maybe it's the music?
    Probably all of the above.

    This is easy!

    1. The secret of monkey island
This is the first I played at the age of 10-11, and I played this more than any other game at that time. it was simply perfect for the time!

    2. Lechucks revenge
Second game in series I played. Bigger and better than the first, but they didn't manage to create the same atmosphere as MI1, humor didn't top the first and the ending was horrible (my own opinion)

    3. Curse of Monkey island
The graphics just didn't do it for me the first time I played it, and I didn't like the interface. I was expecting somthing similar to MI1 and 2, not totally new graphics and interface.
Luckely, the game has grown on me, and when I finally got over my expectations and took the game for what it was I really liked it.

    4. Tales of Monkey Island
So far the game is great, and might steal 3.place at the end. I was really dissapointed with the controls at first, and I still am to some point. And that is the sole reason this gets 4 instead of third place.

    5. Hmm...are there any more games? I've played something called Escape from...something, but seriously.....that was not Monkey Island!! It was a piece of sh**

    1. MI2:LR
    2. SMI
    3. CMI
    4. TMI
    5. EMI

MI2 and SMI are really close, MI2 has a better sense of exploration and atmosphere that I felt SMI didn't have. CMI takes the series a bit towards the cartoony side, with Mr. Threepwood seeming more like a stupid than naivë (as I felt he was in the earlier games). TMI, going by the first episode, seems around the same in terms of characterization as CMI, with less world to explore as of right now, it falls down to #4. EMI went overboard with the cartoonification, and in addition managed to feel more linear, and less like an adventure game, and more like a series of puzzles.

Uh, I wouldn't really start rating TMI til all the chapters are out; but to each their own. Seems rather silly.

    2. MI3
    3. MI1
    4. MI4

Not rating Tales until I've played all 5 chapters. It's kinda like rating "The Three Trials" and all the individual chapters of the other games.

    Curse of Monkey Island
    Monkey Island 2
    Secret of Monkey Island
    Escape from Monkey Island

I'll probably have my head chopped off for this, but:

    TOMI: LotSN
    EMI
    COMI
    MI2
    MI

I'm sorry, but the first two were just kinda frustrating. I had a lot of trouble with the puzzles and couldn't even finish them without help until I played them through three or four times. Even then I had to check a walkthru a couple times. Plus, I played them when I was pretty young, and when MI3 came out I automatically liked it better because it had voices, and didn't look like it came from the 90's. By MI4, I really liked the 3-D graphics, and the humor was great! Monkey Combat kinda bugged me, but other than that I liked it.

Are you mad? Even if you put the first two (best) games in the bottom, COMI is much better than EFMI! And while I like the new TOMI it is no way the best one yet, even if that could change after new episodes arrive.

Well, I guess everyone has different tastes anyway, but maybe you should give the first one another try with the Special Edition.

    4. EFMI (The only reason this is above CoMI is because I played it first, and it introduced me to the Monkey Island Universe. For that I have a soft spot.)

CMI is still my favorite for several reasons-- beautiful locations, beautiful music, and there are still some surprises in the game. TMI has been such a great playing experience so far that I'm betting the rest of the game will live up to the beginning. The Marquis is definitely the best villain after LeChuck-- Ozzie Mandrill eats his dust!

It may be heresy, but I didn't really enjoy MI2 all that much. Can't be denied it's a classic game, but something about it grated on me.

    1. Monkey Island 2: Lechucks Revenge - It was more intelligent, darker, and told a much better storyline than the first game. It was a great step for the franchise. I'd consider it as The Empire Strikes Back of the Monkey Island series.

    2. The Secret of Monkey Island - An instant classic that revolutionized adventure games. Nostalgia is also part of the reason why I have such a fondness for it.

    3. The Curse of Monkey Island - I don't think I had ever been so anticipated for a game like I was when I heard the news that a third entry was being made for this groundbreaking franchise. After the cliffhanger that Lechuck's Revenge left us with, I was desperate for answers. Well, I got none and I remember being quite disappointed. But apart from that it was still a fantastic game and I have fond memories of it.

As of now Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island are currently on par with each other. My final verdict will come once the rest of the episodes are released. The move to 3D hasn't quite captured the magic of the original games in my opinion, but they are still brilliant nonetheless.

    1. MI 2, The first one I ever played, and it made me love the series. even if the ending confused me for a bit.

    2. MI 3: CoMI, Second one I ever played, I loved the style the humor, the voice acting, But it always felt short so i put it in second.

    3. Tales of Monkey Island (So Far), I just really liked it.

    4. MI 1: SoMI, I liked this one, in reality all of these games go in first to me except the 4th one which would be second.

    5. MI 4, I didnt hate it, I enjoyed a lot of it, But it was lacking in the pirate department, And the time swamp always annoyed me.

On the overall I didnt hate any of them. I enjoyed all of them. Its just which was I enjoyed more.

I'm not going to put the Telltale game on the list until it's complete, but it looks like the series is going to be fantastic. Anyway:

1.) SOMI (EGA all the way, baby)
    2.) COMI
    3.) MI2
    4.) EFMI

I replayed MI2 for about the third time the other day, and I was really annoyed by the opacity of some of the puzzles. Two puzzles continue to irk me; I solved them back in the day by literally using everything in my inventory on everything in the environment. First, the use for the piano-monkey is something that I never would've figured out aside from random guessing, and, second, the rubber gloves/balloon thing at the end is maddening. Those puzzles are Maniac Mansion-esque in their unreasonable difficulty. Because of that, I can't enjoy MI2 as much as SOMI or COMI. SOMI I love for its originality, wit, and fairness; COMI I love for the art and the audio.

Also, I encourage people to try SOMI as it was originally published in EGA-- not because it looks better (it doesn't) but because it's amazing what the art crew pulled off with sixteen colors and clever use of dark space.

first i was shocked in the first couple of posts to see people rating MI2 so low, luckily this has been alleviated by now.

    1. MI2
    2. MI1
    3. MI3
    4. ToMI (i cant totally say yet, this may just be #3 for me depending on how it turns out)
    5. MI4

    1. MI 2 - LeChuck's Revenge
    2. MI 3 - Curse of Monkey Island
    3. MI 1 - The Secret of Monkey Island
    4. MI 5.1 - Launch of the Screaming Narwhal

I adjusted the TTG episode's number to include an imaginary part, the one which led to the intro scene of LotSN.
I do not think ToMI should be considered part 6, however, as I reject the thought that "Escape from Monkey Island" could be considered part 4. ;)

    1. CMI (as this was the first MI game I played)
    2. MI2 (loved the deep story and the crazy black humour)
    3. SoMI (Classic story and clever puzzles)
    4. EfMI (While I think this game is the most under-appeciated MI game of the all, It kinda stands on it's own as a homeage to SoMI than anything else.)

I will not rank ToMI yet as it can go both ways. The first episode was a winner though! =)
