Shouldn't this be on LucasArts forum is you want them to see it.
I mean it's cool, thanks for showing it, I just think if you really want something done about it take it to the people who might actually be making the game.
I just wonder how much time that took to put together... sure he makes it sound simple in the video, but how much work is involved in turning the 2D into 3D geography?
I think Monkey Island 1 and 2 are fine as they are in the original version, and I don't really understand why people thought remakes were necessary. I don't really like the new art in the Monkey Island 1 remake either, I prefer the original art.

The reason why they remade them are because they wanted to attract new gamers to the series. New gamers do not like reading, they want to listen, if anything.
And also VGA graphics aren't appealing to the new demographic, unfortunately.

If they decided they had to do a remake, then OK.. but I really don't like the new art. Guybrush's hair looks ridiculous and he's too skinny and tall; for instance.
But more generally I think the decision underestimates young gamers, they're into retro gaming and old NES console games and arcade games.

I don't know that this is necessarily true. Sure I enjoy listening to voiceover as much as the next guy, but even in Twilight Princess Nintendo still didn't record any voices for the characters. Or Mario Galaxy, or Super Paper Mario for that matter. And a great many gamers, some of whom may even have been new, found reading to be just fine there.
VGA graphics I can't really argue with. 320x200 is... not terribly high res. But if I had to choose to have MI2 with voice or MI2 with high res graphics, I'd choose voice over updated graphics any day.
That looked really nice, but just doing the upgraded graphics that he showed.. that was sweet on it's own. That + voices would be a really nice remake of the game if you ask me.
Thanks for the kind words.
My aim was to lay the debate between 2D and 3D to rest. It's a nice little technique to get the best of both worlds. And it can even be used as a base for a 3d level or scene. A next step could be to get this scene into a realtime engine like Cryengine (beautiful ocean ahhh...)
It took approx 4 days for this particular piece. Could be done in 3 maybe if you are dedicated.
The original image used for the projection was just the 700x524 concept art you can get at scummbar.com and which LucasArts released in 2002 (I doubled the resolution with some filtering before the projection) http://www.scummbar.com/games/screenshots/mi2/concept/5.jpg
If LucasArts still has the original painted backgrounds a scan in higher resolution or just a new image with higher res (700x524 is ridicously low-res) could work wonders to improve the results a lot.
Oh yeah and it's me the keylight mood guy Sorry again for starting that shitstorm a couple weeks back..
here are some wallpapers of the scene. I didn't really bother to touch them up extensively, so it's not perfect
the Guybrush in the first one is based on Paco Vink's neat sprite.
Scans of the original art just won't do it, unfortunately. They are probably not big enough to suffice for modern-day resolutions. Redrawn on a bigger scale using the same materials (done with markers, I think?), however - that would be really interesting.
No need to be fully 3D; however, some of these nifty effects should be included if possible. It's the illusion of 3D what made this video so interesting for me. Camera movement could be a nice thing to simulate.
I would stop promoting this if I was you. Lucas Arts has been known to throw a shit fit over this kind of stuff.
"Promoting" means advertising a product which can be bought. In this case, no attempt was made to do anything about which LucasArts could have any feeling besides pride.
That. Is. Awesome.
I wish I could do something like that. I think the best way LucasArts could pull that off is hire you and put you in charge of all the backgrounds. However, I still think it would work best 2D with prerendered 3D backgrounds.
The SMI controls were crap, I wish that verb wheel existed.
That was quite possibly the coolest thing I've seen. Still, I think the backgrounds were great, but still...
Tales has 3D graphics, and I personally think the backgrounds are as good as that (actually better). The only thing that detracts from Tales is the characters and NPC's. I can't see how Lucasarts could do a better job though (well, apart from not recycling ALL the models so you can't tell the pirates in town apart...).
So it's cool for backgrounds but I don't think you could add people and objects easily.

I dont know much about updates and stuff through steam, but does anyone think lucasarts would go to the effort to add a new set of controls for verbs and inventory in the SE, they could just get verbs to pop up by holding down the left mouse button, like in curse and since right mouse is taken up by the default verb action make inventory come up with a hold down of the right mouse button.
I think the problem is that the source for the original game code - if it ever existed in any form other than SCUMM assembly - has been lost. That's why Secret: Special Edition is built on top of SCUMM. The disassembly you get out of ScummVM tools is not very friendly.
In contrast SCUMM itself is better-known - it was ported to Windows as part of the LucasArts Entertainment Pack, and that's where the Steam releases have come from too (source).
Being stuck with the old game code, though, likely requires that the game code only sees character positions that match 1:1 with original resolutions, and probably means you can't stick new frames of animation in either. My guess as to why people were hearing gaps between dialogue lines was that the voice was synchronized with each line of text as it was shown on screen; you can test this out by going into 'old' mode in the special edition and using - and + to change the text speed, then going back into HD mode - you'll find that the voices gain or lose delay between lines as you do this.
Beautiful work, I hope this is the route Lucasarts take with the art, Monkey Island 2 has a unique style compared to the first game (which I think they did a great job special editionising) but there's way more atmosphere to capture in MI2's semi-stylised paintings.
Yeah i must say that verb wheel seems like a very VERY good idea, sometimes companies should get ideas from fans, the same with the inventory system instead of having to open annoying stuff all the time, even in Tales of Monkey Island, i rather have items at the button screen, taking one line.
Just to clarify: I have no intentions of going forward and making any kind of game or product out of this.
Even if every one of the 100 (?) backgrounds would be out there as a scanned concept art. It's way too much work to even consider it and I already have a fulltime job at a game studio
Just make this small calculation: 3-4 days per screen x 100 = 400 days. JEEZUS. hehe
I just wanted to demonstrate what could be possible if they chose this technique and made a little effort.

Still looks freaking AWESOME! MOAR MOAR hehe.
Btw any chance this is possible with day of the tentacle phwettty pleeeeease ^^
Hmm. That really didn't look 3D untill he started moving the camera.
I'm sure Lucas Arts would want to do this but remember the hardcore fans prefer the original visuals. With this look it wouldn't be able to be built on the SCUMM engine so there would be no flip back and forth so they would get hate.

Meh, I consider myself a hardcore fan and I don't have any problem with 3d. In fact, as I said, I'd love to see a remake made like this. This comes very close to the original art, so I doubt people would be aganst it.

Seems like someone found a way to end the ole 2D vs D war
But seriously, this is some pretty awesome software.
I would love to see a 3D Big Whoop done in this style.
Wish they'd make it!

I just beg they dont bring back that HORRIBLE UI system they made for Monkey Island SE damn that really didn work

Just to point out, that Guybrush was drawn by Paco Vink. I think he credited him in the video.
