What are hardest games that you have ever played?

& by that I don't mean just adventure games. I mean period.

Lets do it in this format.

Computer- I wanna be the guy. This game is just insane, you have shit trying to kill you with ever step you take.

Retro Game- Final Fight (SNES). I never could make it past the cop (the 3rd boss).

Modern Game- Ninja Gaiden (XBOX). I mean this game is legendary for its difficulty. I know that this is a bit cliche... but it really is that hard.

Computer: I don't have a whole lot of experience to draw from, being mainly a console gamer, but im gonna have to go with Team Fortress 2. Not only does it lag horribly, but i get killed before i can even DO anything.

Retro: Legacy of the Wizard for NES! You are given a HUGE, puzzling dungeon to explore, but nobody tells you exactly what your supposed to DO in there, you just have to figure it out.

Modern: Ikaruga(GC version). I suck at the game so bad, it hurts :(

Final Fight is awesome, still plays brilliantly today. The PSP version is a bit easy though because you can just keep topping up the credits. The only way to make it difficult is to limit yourself - pretend you only have a certain amount of money to spend on the arcade.

I've always been rubbish at Pacman. Found Flicky quite hard too.

C64 - Cauldron. I mentioned it here with a link to a remake to get your own impression.

Amen to that. Especially the Black edition. Unfortunately, I have the Xbox Originals download version, and I learned the hard way that you lose all of your saves when you disconnect the HDD... would have been nice to know, since I was at the final boss... >.<

Another toughie: X2: Wolverine's Revenge. Pretty fun game, but if I ever hear the name "Wendigo" again, I will snap.

Ikaruga (Gamecube) was pretty damn hard.

Predator (Amiga version anyway) is also really difficult.

Shadow of the Beast 1&2 were really hard the first times I played them, but not so much anymore.

    Oregon Trail gave me cholera.

    Space Quest 4. Aaarrgh!

Another difficult game (unless you use a resting trick) is - Lost Patrol (Amiga).

There was a part in Donkey Kong 64 where you had to play the original Mario VS Donkey Kong arcade game, and win it TWICE in order to gain access to the final boss.

Oh my, so many hours of my childhood wasted on that mini-game. And I still haven't beat the final boss :( Too hard.

I suffer from PTSD due to the intensely traumatizing difficulty of a certain NES game, one with a title including ethereal spirits and gnome-like creatures. The game Shall Not Be Named, as seeing the title will cause me to curl into the fetal position in the corner. And seriously, how lame does your armor have to be to leave you in your underwear after one hit?

    <shudder>

I Wanna Be The Guy doesn't count because it's not even a game it's just a torture device for insane masochists.

I didn't know that one. I will try to play it, but the Torture starts with the Download at 28 KiB/s

Be sure to give us your thoughts afterwards... and check out some of the playthroughs on YouTube. Pure comedy gold. :D

Curse you! I'd managed to forget that, and now it's all flooding back! CURSE YOU!

For me, it's Bionic Commando Rearmed. I started off OK, but it quickly got to the WTF? point. Actually enjoyed it up until then too. Oh well.

That would spoil it. I am laughing like hell already because of the absurd things happening ^^
It's even worse than Sierra games :D

^ Oh, man. They should have advertised IWBTG as "The Ultimate Sierra Adventure" :p.

But don't worry, you'll be on YouTube soon enough, if just to figure out how the holy hell certain screens are passable. *evil grin*

"I Wanna Be The Guy" is definitely nice work.
When i was designing levels for my Boulderdash style game, I built in as much traps as possible too, but they were at least following the consistent game logic ^^
My testers hated me for that, but so i knew the levels worked as intended.

The hardest game I have played is without a doubt... Megaman. They should pay me 500 wii points to suffer through that game.
  • edited August 2009
Braid. Anyone who's played it will know of the
    several hour long platform wait
    to get that one star.

Come to think of it, the final fight in Tekken 5 was a bitch too. Bastard has two unblockable attacks that do half a life bar of damage & he usually does one after the other at the beginning of the fight (& that is on easy). It is the only game I can actually recall getting so pissed that I broke things at.

On the subject of fighting games... MK3/UMK3. I'll admit that I suck at fighting games, but not so much that I go entire rounds without hitting the opponent once... and yet, MK3's AI appears to have no trouble making that happen.

MK1? I can beat that in my sleep.
MK2? Much harder, but I can still beat it.
The 3D MKs? Even easier than MK1.
But in MK3, I'm lucky to finish three matches before the AI goes into overdrive and slaughters me with uber-combos. Ugh.

Megaman Legends 1 and 2 are up there in the hardest category.
Megaman: Network Transmission for the GCN is also pretty bad; I never beat the first boss.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is horribly tough, as well as the Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Earthbound was pretty hard too. I really had to grind to beat that.

Quest For Glory 2, Broken Sword 2, most AGI games, and SCI games.

I've played a lot of really hard games that have made me say I hope I never have to do that again, and made me grind my teeth in frustration.

I could go through Metroid, Ocarina of Time, SOCOM, Metal Gear Solid, Trilby-Art of Theft, Cave Story, Final Fantasy, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, etc. etc.

But the hardest, most impossible, horrible, anger inducing, teeth shatteringly hard game I have ever played....is Superman 64. Someone shoot the man who made that. It is, without a doubt, truly horrible. It's difficulty is in it's awfulness.

Yet again... I never had a problem with Mario or Sonic. Its cool to see things like this... I mean it really shows you what type of games people are most experienced with.

Thats not hard. Just let the game running and do something else.
    But I agree the
    stars
are all quite hard to get but you don't need them to finish the game.

The online Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game is the hardest adventure game I've ever played.

The Black Dahlia. Jeez, I thought I finally was through with the game, but it kept going on and on (the game is really long!). And the puzzles were getting more complicated, I'm afraid I had to use the walkthrough more than once to get through the game.

    "Solve my maze!"

Ikaruga is stupidly tough. I've never made it past the opening of level 3.

Viewtiful Joe was pretty solid too - Fire Leo broke my heart, knowing I was so close to the end of the game but that I'd never be able to beat that bar-steward. I still haven't.

Other than that it's the usual suspects - Ghouls & Ghosts, the Ninja Gaiden series, and Contra. Contra 4 on the DS is hard as nails.

Oh, and retro-style? Jet Set Willy. The Banyan Tree. 'Nuff said.

For me, it's Ghosts and Goblins.
I've never beaten it, but every once in a while I'll pop it in and try again, for old times sake.

Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero is pretty mental. I lost something in the region of 50 lives on one of the bosses.

Two retro Amiga games spring to mind:

Yolanda - this was advertised as a "great challenge" but was so ridiculously difficult it was unplayable.

Fire and Brimstone - extremely difficult, but not quite unplayable. Nowadays it can probably be completed using savestates on an emulator (if you are patient enough).

The single most difficult point-and-click adventure I have ever played is The Bizarre Adventures Of Woodruff And The Schnibble. Not only is it illogical but there are certain parts of the game that require you to do things a number of times until the action works, without any clue that it'll eventually do something. So even with incredible patience and by using trial and error you may still never complete it. I gave up and started looking at walkthroughs. And it's possible to reach a "game over" in various places by doing things that don't seem all that dangerous.

On SCUMMVM I think it is actually unfinishable. Even after resorting to a bunch of walkthroughs I'm right at the end of the game and can't seem to get something to work!

It's a shame because it's a really entertaining and funny game. It's just so illogical and random.

Okay, I've recovered from my own personal BSoD after someone mentioned The Game That Shall Not Be Named. I've come up with another difficult game (though hardly trauma-inducing). Best of all, it's free!

Those of you brave enough to face some monstrous puzzles, go play The Fool's Errand. May your minds meet the challenge...and yes, I have beaten this game in its entirety.

That's the point, It's Disgaea in platform format.

Speaking of Disgaea, I add it to the list. Why? Well, if you don't grind a LOT you are going to get your behind turned into a pile of bloodied meat sponge. By the way, The level cap is 9999.
