That's the point, It's Disgaea in platform format.
Actually I've not had that much trouble with Disgaea (it probably helps that I started a new game after losing against midboss the second time you fight him, and got the ridiculously overpowered Pleinair on my team. Her evade is so high, it's easiest just to try and get enemies to attack her, miss, and then have her counter-attack. The third battle with him was relatively easy after that.).
deadlinejon: I couldn't really say for sure whether you'd like it or not. Like I said, it's insanely difficult, and it does contain a few spoilers for other Disgaea games, if you ever get into the series.
I'm enjoying it though. Apparently there's a lot of replayability, seeing as the level layouts and cutscenes change depending on which order you play them in.

I'm just wondering: how much time does it actually take to get through the game? I mean just to get through and see the story at a normal pace. I realise that you can put in endless hours to perfect things, but that's not my thing. I started it once and got quite bored levelling my characters in the same battles over and over. Not to mention item world...
I've not finished any of them yet, only recently became a fan, but my bro beat Disgaea 3 in about 40 hours, with relatively little grinding.
I'm about 20 hours into Disgaea DS, which is just a port of the first game, and I've not had to grind much either (apart from starting the game from scratch 11 hours in, but it only took me about another 2 or 3 hours to get back to where I was).
There's the extra story after the credits in Disgaea 3, where the enemies are apparently a lot harder, so there's a lot of grinding involved there though. I'm not sure how hard the Raspberyl DLC is, it's not out here yet, but I'd imagine that requires some grinding as well.

Aha, well I really like the characters so maybe I should give it another try, then. 40 hours is about reasonable for an RPG.
I have a lot of trouble with RTS games. Any game that involves a lot of multitasking is very stressful for me. The hardest was Homeworld. I think it was mainly because the units carried over to the next level, so if you barely made it through the last level, you were basically screwed on the next. Also, Starcraft Brood War was impossible to beat near the end of the Zerg campaign without cheating. I still have a save that is 10 years old from the third to last mission that I intend on completing.
