Where can I start in the expanded Universe of ME series which book what comic do I have to play the games?

The first 3 Mass Effect novels are pretty good. They relate to the games though. The first is Revelation and is a prequel to the first game. The second is Ascension and is set between the first and second games. The third is Retribution and takes place between games 2 and 3. Avoid the forth book, Deception(different writer), as (of last publication)it contains numerous continuity and factual errors. It's also the weakest book.

  • None of the actual books and comics feature Shepard as a main character. So they're all really expanded universe.

The novel Revelation and the comic run, Evolution, have to do with the First Contact War.

The comic run, Redemption, directly relates to Mass Effect 2. It connects the prologue to the main story.

Invasion is a comic run revolving around Omega.

Homeworlds is an interesting run of 4 comics where each one follows the story of a squad member of the third game.

I have not read any of Foundation. That one is 13 comics of original stories. Might be something worth checking out if you want to venture further from the games.

  • I recommend Halo Fall of Reach. It tells the whole backstory of John 117 and of how the Human-Covenant War had started. It's a great read.

  • In my opinion, the Halo books by Eric Nylund—The Fall of Reach, First Strike, and Ghosts of Onyx—are the best. Definitely start with The Fall of Reach.

  • And I can really follow it as a newcomer?

  • Yes, the book introduced me to the universe before I had ever played the first Halo game.
