Is it true that Jesus' miracle of feeding 5000 didn't happen literally?

Just this sunday i heard a teacher telling the story to the kids about Jesus' miracle of the feeding of the 5000. He said to the young kids, so how did Jesus do it? magic?, one of the young ones shouted YES!

Then the teacher said, the miracle was the 5 loaves & 2 fish didn't actually multiplied. He continued, it was because after Jesus prayed, the other followers found it in their hearts to share what they have.

So, my questions are,

  1. what actually happened during the Feeding of the 5,000?
  2. in what verse of the text can we get the proof that Jesus didn't literally multiply the 5 loves & 2 fish?
  3. If what the teacher was saying is true, then why didn't the Gospel writers just wrote literally what happened and not make it magical so people won't get confused or fooled?

  • how can that be if jesus himself was the first zombie

I think this applies to a lot of things in the Bible.

  • or, maybe the teacher was wrong?

Different people interpret religions differently. Teaching religion and saying "this is how it happened" is one of the problems with religion in school (other being that you're pretty much indoctrinating kids). Really no one has any idea what actually happened.

  • It's up to your interpretation.

  • There is a similar story in Islam. Muhammed fed hundreds of people on his army with just only a handful of dates. Dates became rapidly increasing as soldiers eat them. There are many people who believe this as well.

Its about your perspective. Some people found this senseful because there is a God behind it, others call this a fairy tale. I am on fairy tale side.

Also, telling kids these stories and try to make them believe to them is wrong. Kids shouldnt have to take religion lesson until they become teenagers or reach the mental ability to make a comment about religions. Because religion can be a dangerous weapon if it gets out of control. So, try to imply religion idea to the kids is a huge mistake that will lead eventually to the bad consequences in future. But also it is happening in Middle East now.

Never mind the fact that the stories were told orally for generations and then written and re-written by Kings whom are biased, how about the fact that the book was translated multiple times and no one has any idea of vernacular and idioms.

Imagine what what people will think hundreds of years from now when they read phrases like "have your cake and eat it too" or "raining cats and dogs".

No matter what you believe, I couldn't take anything translated from so long ago at face value. Isn't it more about inspiration anyway?

  • i love religious threads

  • Oh Anonymer, why is it always you?

  • Is this discussing religion or discussing our interpretation of a story ;)
