How do you control ToMI?

How do you move Guybrush around? W,A,S,D keys? Arrow keys? Mouse drag? A zany combination of mouse and keyboard?

If you feel like it, explain why you gravitated towards your control method of choice.

I personally mouse drag. I find it more relaxing using only one arm.

Edit: Apologies to my Wii brethren for not including you in the poll. The controls are a big deal for many PC users so the aim of this poll was to test the demographics of the different PC controls.

I like using the mouse drag. It just feels easy to just use the mouse to walk as well as look around rather than using a combination of the mouse and keyboard.

It was quite easy to pick up - I had Guybrush walking around the ship instantly in Chapter 1 and I think it's a pretty clever solution. I'm now quite spoiled by it - I was playing Wallace and Gromit and trying to drag them around lol. I've used the running more as well in Chapter 2 - especially that bit where the
melted pyrite needs to get through the jungle quick

Same here, and while I was put off by it at first once you get the hang of it I find that I like it better than the old point'n'click method in getting around.

I'm using wasd the whole time, can't get used to the mouse.

I just do any :P but I keep point clicking by instict

As I mentioned in other thread - I'm already a big fan of the mouse dragging. I find it a great alternative of the p&c and I like to play the game relaxed with one free hand. :)

I was playing Wallace & Gromit the other day and was thinking, Dammit, why won't you mouse drag? I think just having the option is good.

I like the control method in Sam & Max Season 2, where if you hold the mouse button down (and double click to run,) Sam follows the cursor. The old point and click method was unbearable in sections where screen panned. You just had to keep clicking at every newly revealed inch of screen until you got to where you wanted to be. I understand why Telltale is trying to veer away from that control method, even if what they have tried so far hasn't been a smash success with the fans.

I use WASD, I'm used to it from other games.
  • edited August 2009
W,A,S,D keys are what I used. I've used them a fair bit ever since playing Star Wars KOTOR and I must say that I prefer them to the arrow keys. The mouse drag thing is just stupid in my opinion... but hey, If it suits you them who am I to complain or critisize?
  • edited August 2009
WASD. Though it's a bit annoying that you cant scroll the dialogue options with W and S. If I want to use the keys for that, I'm forced to use up and down arrow keys.

Mousedragging still feels completely unnatural, and with the constant change of cameras it's confusing as well. Maybe someday, I'll get used to it, with a little bit of practice.

I find dragging quite natural and provides much more precise control then WASD. Trying to easily change direction while moving using WASD is a PITA. While it is quite easy to do so using mouse dragging such as in the jungle.

I drag W&G around using a script I made when the game first came out. See this post.

i use pointnclick as much as i can (clicking objects to walk)
my hand hurts holding down the mousebutton(s) all the time, i will never get used to clickndrag :(
its an abomination and hopefully it wont be ever used again for an adventure game
  • edited August 2009
i use wasd. arrow keys are just wrong.
  • edited August 2009
    Whatever I feel like.
And in narrow rooms I prefer the keys.
  • edited August 2009
Arrow keys. I never use WASD if I can help it. I'm left-handed, so my mouse is on that side of the keyboard already, meaning that switching back and forth between the keys and the mouse gets awkward--I prefer to keep one hand on the control keys and another on the mouse. (It's a habit I picked up from too many hours of Half-Life, what can I say.)

I tried just using the mouse, but the click-and-drag always feels clunky to me. Like I'm trying to lasso Guybrush and drag him across the screen.

I refuse to use the keyboard for an adventure game in the 21st century, so it's the mouse drag - with emphasis on drag

Telltale, while not as bad as Wallace and Gromit, the control scheme is still dumb - why could you not adopt S&M's ?

I miss the ability to click on the screen and have him walk there, but the the mouse draging works.

I tried using the keyboard for W&G but couldn't get the hang of it, I ended up using my 360 controller.

I got a bit stuck with running round the calender in EP1 and the controller was still easiest.

Is everyone aware that clicking a hotspot makes Guybrush walk to it? You only have to walk to move the camera around the scene or to go to another scene, it's not really a big deal and I actually prefer it greatly to mashing my mouse button all over the screen to walk around and accidentally clicking hotspots I didn't mean to.

WASD+Mouse. It's second nature to me, even if it's odd in adventure games.

I tried W+M1, but it appears that ol' Guybrush doesn't have a flamethrower.

I actually don't think time is of the essence for that puzzle (just to test my theory, I actually waited for a minute before I started moving after having
    melted the parrot
    and the
    pyrite
    was still
    melted
    ). It's more a question of
    how many screens you travel

Oh, I'm sorry. I completely forgot about the Wii users  Though this really is more of an experiment to see how the PC gamers play, seeing as PC players have all those options.

    Sorry, though :(

It's weird, I played episode one with almost exclusively the WASD controls. Then I played episode two with almost exclusively the click-and-drag control. Strange.

    Same thoughts here.

I really like the new mouse controls. By clicking and holding the mouse button to move you - at least these are my feelings - more get the sense of beeing into the game.

For my share with the new mouse dragging option there is a higher feeling of interaction than it is with P&C.

Running also works fine in this case.

I actually use the 360 controller I always have plugged in in place of WSAD and my mouse for clicking. I prefer actual analog turning instead of being locked into eight directions with WSAD controls. I rest the 360 controller in my lap and use my left hand for the analog stick (and left bumper to run) and right hand up on the mouse. Works pretty well.

Edit: I'd actually love if there were a way to bind the cursor movement to the right analog stick and just go fully controller, honestly.

Love the click-n-drag technique, I don't know how I got along without it!
Went back and played some Sam & Max, and was constantly trying to drag. haha.
  • edited August 2009
It depends on the scene I'm in; sometimes its easier or faster to use drag, or faster to use the keys.

Most of the time I click hotspots to move around, and only use the controls when I need to get back to the full screen view to select another hotspot.
  • edited August 2009
Mainly been using the wasd keys. Mouse control style is alright. Doesn't seem to be an improvement over point n click. It eliminates the need to sometimes continually click on the edge of the screen to navigate certain panoramic environments, and replaces it with the need to constantly press and hold a button to walk. Would've liked p&c to be a possible control scheme, perhaps selectable in the options menu. Not too hurt by it's loss. Every game is different and has different needs.

I use mouse drag because traditionally these games were made to be mouse control only.
Since you can't point and click on a ground location to move... dragging is the next best thing

34% for mouse drag!! Incredible! I thought that was the most stupid control mechanism ever. Obviously, others get along with it far better. Voted for WSAD...
  • edited August 2009
Seriously? Most people use mouse-drag? It seems so counter-intuitive and forces me to use arrows/WASD, not that I mind. I love the arrows. I'd really like the controls to be customized, though.
  • edited August 2009
None of these options, i use Xbox360 controller plus XPadder for beeing able to explore the scene via the right analog stick.

I would love to see mouse point&click support like in Bone, Sam&Max and StrongBad.

As I said earlier, after a few attempts I found I liked mouse-drag alot better than p&c. I think I was put off at first in the same way I was initially put off using mouse for FPSes and third-person action games: hard to use initially, but easy to master. I avoided using the mouse until I realised that I needed to use it to be any good at Max Payne, and after a day I realised that I could not go back to the keyboard.

In a way, I feel the keyboard controls actually hinder learning the drag method, as it gives players an easy way out that isn't actually easier, when if they stuck with it they might get used to it. Then again, some people might not be able to get used to it (like me with gamepads, hideous things), so maybe not.

It is interesting to see that there seems to be a fairly even split between keyboard, mouse and combination, with combination only lagging a little bit relatively speaking.
