What's with the overtones of this?

Hey - what's with all the gay overtones in this saga? In the first episode the Marquis was all freaky - especially that groaning puzzle solution....but now this second episode is almost like a one-trick pony. The mer-people with their gender ambiguity, the Isle of Ewe comments, the Morgan comments about DeSinge wanting the "whole package." Etc etc etc. I'm as open-minded as they come, but this is over the top. WTH? This game is for kids too. And frankly, the whole lumberjack/good for 24 hours/hey sailor stuff is starting to bother me. Slimy.:confused:

It's only gay if you think it is.

Yeah, what's next, Telltale? Pirates breaking into song??!!!

Huh? Did you mean "if" not "of?" - and that's a crappy reply - no one is missing the subtlety here because it is not even subtle. Of course now all the bashers will come out - I'm just saying I think there are other things to spoof - plus the "jokes" here are so stereotypical (with the eye make up on the mer-men for example) I would think that even gay people would find it unamusing.

Ah. This is like the Phallic symbols thread. If you are really out to find it, you will.
Ok the merfolk thing is obvious, but other then that I didn't notice any other 'gay-undertone' anywhere...... until you pointed it out that is.
I bet Freud would have something to say about this :)

Wow - so much for free speech. Are you a happy little basher?

Maybe in Germany it's easier to explain these things to your 10 year old playing it - but thanks for your support.

This game is for kids too.

Not necessarily...? It's 10+, isn't it? I've never thought of MI as an entirely "kid-friendly" franchise anyway, because of the innuendo (gay or otherwise), not to mention various disturbing elements (MI2 is pure nightmare fuel even for me at some points).

Speaking of, there's plenty of innuendo to go around in the previous games, too. It's hardly new in Tales. A lot of it is what you read into it, too...hence bobdevis's Freud comment. The "whole package" thing with Morgan and DeSinge, for instance--didn't even register on my radar for any kind of innuendo.

As for the mer-folk: sure, their gender is ambiguous. They're fish. What did you expect? Personally, though, I read Anemone as female (or as close to female as mer-people get), so...just your regular heterosexual innuendo, there. Your mileage may vary.

I don't feel it has to much gay-jokes in (and I belive Alemonade and Beluga are female and librarian is male).
And you can't denny the existance of gay (and woman in their bras) people for any reason. You may like it and you may like it not, but they're still there.

    "Ahoy there, fancy pants!"

    'nuff said.

They beauty of vague suggestions is that you only pick them up if you have a dirty mind yourself.
10 year old kinds are therefore quite safe as they will totally miss them.

I played Secret of Monkey Island when I was five.

I read Anemone as a flamboyant transvestite or crossdresser. =p

Monkey Island's fanbase have grown along with the series, and innuendo isn't new to it. Anyone remember Largo's bra?

If the merfolk have no concept of gender they may be asexual not gay or bi or straight

Oh I get it now. This whole thread is a flame bait.
Caribbean Queen is not actually serious. He just wants lots of replies. Caribbean Queen, Drama Queen.... clever...
  • edited August 2009
Hey bobdevis keep it clean this is no place for your flam(ing) war of words. It's just my opinion - honor it - the jokes are obvious for a 10 year old and anyone who thinks a 10 year old doesn't "get the gay" is really uber-naive. Kids are pretty savvy. This game isn't just for adults - it is for children too. Maybe it just isn't suitable for kids. Pity.

I'm a woman. And I'm not against anyone or anything - I just feel that the game has too many gay overtones. That's it. No need to insult back and forth. It's just too much for me. Sorry if you feel you need to attack an opinion. Shows how far we've come here - where "diversity of opinion" means you'll tolerate any opinion that is YOURS.:cool:

If the jokes are obvious for a 10 years old, what's wrong with them? It the 10 years old gets the joke, it doesn't teach him anything. He just thinks "What a funny gay joke" or "What a lousy gay joke" and that's it! And heterosexual jokes are much more obvious in Siege of Spinner Cay (
    Siege of Spinner Gay
    )
And as I said, you can't denny the existance of gay people.
And why aren't you complaining about voilence? Come on, Guybrush gets his hand choped at the very begin!

  • edited August 2009
No I will not be "angry" and I please wish you would not try to use the tactic of pidgeonholing someone as some "hater." As I said - this is just not what I thought would be the main mast of humor in this series.....it's a one-trick pony. And boring. And the easy way out in terms of humor-development. Maybe the Lair of the Leviathan will be tho tho thcary and then we can all laugh heartily me lads at the oh-tho-clever thexual humor. Har.:D

There was another thread around here someplace where we were discussing the game's ending--aside from the potentially brain-breaking finale, there's the bit where
LeChuck gets his leg rather gorily ripped off.
I think the general consensus on that was that it was one of the most disturbing scenes in the series so far.
I played Secret of Monkey Island when I was five.

Overachiever. :p And eh, I'm not saying kids won't play these games (they do, obviously), just that a lot of it is going to go over their heads and/or not be entirely appropriate.

There really isn't a lot of gay overtones. The De Singe just acts very flamboyant, but I never really thought of him as gay. And if he is, so what? It's not like the game is showing anything graphic. As for the Winslow thing, I just found that to be funny. Everything else seemed to be regular jokes with no gay undertones. Also, this games isn't exactly made for ten year old. All the games are made for people a little bit older.

Because while the game can be funny and silly, the stories are usually very serious filled with spooky areas and plots, deaths, betrayal, and very sadistic villains who enjoy gutting people alive. The gay jokes are the least threatening thing for kids in these games. They will find out about it soon enough, but wouldn't you rather them find out in a lighthearted manner, than in a violent or awkward situation? Don't take this as any form as bashing as I respect your opinion, but this really doesn't seem to be an issue.

:confused:Perhaps you know dumb 10 year olds. The ones I know (even 8 year olds) would not be in the dark about this type of humor. Sorry to sound mean, but I'm getting a little defensive here. Seriously can you think that kids will not get these references? C'mon be serious.

Yeah, and so what if they do. There are gay people in the world and they will learn that soon enough. Better they learn it in a lighthearted manner, than from seeing it on the news with people filling their heads with the wrong ideas.
