Yeah, that is the better link. Use that one. Takes you right to the Guybrush/Wanderer vote.

At the time of posting (9:30 GMT), Guybrush is losing 44.7% to 55.3%. C'mon peeps!

Thanks for updating this with a better link.

Guybrush has way more video game titles than this Wanderer creep, he deserves to advance to the second round

Good news, we're catching up! Guybrush has moved up to 47.8% of the vote!

    Voted. Guybrush must win.

Also, some of these match-ups are a bit ridiculous... Ryu vs. Abe? Master Chief vs. Bub and Bob? At least keep them in similar genres, if not the same genre.

They're stacking the votes, is the issue. You don't want to have too epic a pairing at the very beginning and have someone like Mario or Cloud kicked out before they have a chance. From a voter perspective, it sure looks hilarious, but it makes sense... IF a bit unfair. You can even see it in the pictures/description- Gamespot is expecting Guybrush to lose.

So I'm really hoping that doesn't happen.

I loved the Sackboy vs Bo Jackson one though, I can't even decide which to pick.
  • edited September 2009
I wish they would cut right to the "Mario and Sonic/Ryu and Ken/etc. and etc." type match-ups, though. That way it won't fall under the curse of the top ten list where either Mario or Cloud take the top spot every single time.

    "Top Ten Characters"
    1. Mario/Cloud

    "Top Ten Games"
    1. Mario/FF7

    "Top Ten FPS Weapons"
    1. Mario/Cloud

"Top Ten Places to Visit in Amsterdam"
    1. Mario/Cloud

    Ech.

They really did pick a brutal pic for Guybrush, and their explanation of him was sort of weak.

Well, even if Gamespot is trying to stack the matches, lets prove them wrong. That should take a chunk out of any of the gamespot editors brackets.

I think the gamespot vote with guybrush and wander is biased the description is un flattering to guybrush and prases wander and most comments are ppl insulting guybrush or ppl saying they never played it it seems ppl are voteing witch game is best not the charecters

...this reminds me why I rarely fit with the normal gaming population.

    Bonk is better than Mario.
Nights is better than modern-day Prince of Persia(and it's real close if we're talking classic)

Lara Croft better than Parappa? Lara Croft's character is "Boobs with a gun".

Abe is clearly superior to Ryu in terms of character.

    Modern gamer culture sucks.

What, POP is a real classic. I still remember playing it as a little kid and it doesn't fit in the image of the modern games.

But anyway : vote for Guybrush, the vote for him is increasing slowly and he can win! :)

If somebody defies him, he smacks them to the ground and forces them to follow his orders. And listen to him laugh when he makes a Slig explode... Abe is one brutal bastard. :p

I felt bad for Manny too, they at least could have put him against Dig Dug or something for a real battle. Manny is awesome, but he's done for.

    Voted for Guybrush.

On the topic of the vote though.

I still don't get why people choose Cloud Strife. A rock has more personality than him. Honestly, go get a rock, and name it cloud, and talk to it, and you'll probably get the same response as you would get from Cloud.

It annoys me to hell that people choose him. Yeah Final Fantasy 7 was a good game, blah blah blah. Doesn't mean Cloud was a good character. Annoying Angsty teen. Even Squall was better than him, atleast Squall managed to gain a personality through the game, unlike Cloud whom still manages to be emo even in Advent Children.

Sorry for the little rant, it just really pushes my buttons.

The competition is incredibly biased. The creators obviously don't want Guybrush to win or they would have gotten their facts straight and not made him out to be such a pathetic "hero."
  • edited October 2009
Ok Guybrush may have lost but Link is being beat by Gordon Freeman... Its really close... He cant lose...

You are probably the only person on these forums who thinks that. I'm not saying your opinion is invalid, just that this is probably the wrong place to look for support on your views.

I blame that more on Guybrush's profile. It was terrible. Even I didn't feel like voting for him. They said he was a "hapless hero" and that "he tends to be rescued by his more-capable ladylove, Elaine Marley"

Compare that to "Wander does battle with 16 titans, whose massive size and special powers make them challenging foes to bring down."

I'm sorry but eff off Gamespot!

I've loved Team ICO for a very, very long time, even before Shadow of the Colossus became such a popular game. (I still prefer Ico, though.)

I can't tell you which is the better game, because it's a lot like comparing, I don't know, Spirited Away with The Big Lebowski. But then again, the quality of the game doesn't matter, since this is the best hero - but really, can you compare Chehiro with The Dude?

Apart from the unflattering description Guybrush got pasted with (and I've seen people vote for Wander based on that), Guybrush isn't as well-known as The Wanderer. Most people who'd vote for him have no idea who Guybrush is.

Frankly, the whole thing is really, really stupid, and Gamespot should know better. It's bad enough that flimsy excuses for character like Sephiroth win so very often. I wouldn't take Guybrush losing as a major point, or as any sort of indication other than a reaffirmation as to why Gamespot is one big joke.

I also wanted to add that the Monkey games were pretty revolutionary during their time, and that there's a reason they hold-up so well today (I interviewed a pair of ten year old girls on the subject a while back). Even the newer ones are revolutionary in their own little way, as they do what no-one in gaming has managed to before: tell an excellent story in monthly installments, while somehow keeping it fun and interesting. (In chapters; Sam and Max's episodes hold-up pretty well on their own, as do Strong Bad's, etc).

Again, I love Shadow of the Colossus, I love Ico, and I've played through each game several times and studied them. I know the Colossi's names by heart. But comparing them is really, really silly, and you're just better off thinking of each game on its own.

I know Gordon is beating Link, but I have a feeling that the tides will turn at the last second, and it'll end up being Mario vs. Link. Yet again. Oy.
  • edited October 2009
Gordon is pretty awesome, but he won't win.

    Stupid fanboyism wins again. Gah.

Nintendo = Fail. As a kid, it was fun. But now, the games are dated and old and should be catering to a better audience, they're terrible games, they just appeal to kids.

Wait, what? I'm no Ninty fanboy (my last Nintendo console was the N64), but I'd have to say that their established franchises are pretty timeless.

I mean, I'm sick of seeing Mario/Samus/Link plastered all over everything as well, but honestly, there's a reason for that: most Mario/Metroid/Zelda games are quite well made and well received. If they only appealed to kids, or if they were "terrible", then it wouldn't be an issue in the first place.

And what do you mean by a "better" audience? Kids and casuals are allowed to play games too (just keep the kids off of XBL and PSN, for my eardrums' sake :p), and when a new Mario/Metroid/Zelda is announced, it's the core gamers that get hyped.
  • edited October 2009
Metroid is a meh fps, Zelda is a watered down RPG and mario is a shallow, simple platformer.

They were great as kids but for each nintendo game, there's about 5 better games.

It's fine it's aimed at kids, but most games company made games aimed at older gamers as well. Look at the Wii, there's no games aimed at adults. There's what, 3?

I would have preferred that Nintendo make games aimed at older audiences, because they have a lot of talent and resources, it seems pointless to waste it all on mario games.

Wait, are you seriously going to say that the Halo and Gears of War crowd is made up of adults? Because I'm pretty sure it's split between high school boys and the worst sort of people colleges have to offer. I doubt there are many people past, let's arbitrarily guess 25, in that fanbase.

I mean, I'm no Nintendo fan either. I had a Genesis as a kid(and computers, obviously). But more or less the entirety of mainstream gaming is made up of immature, lowest-common-denominator tripe.

Thing is, Nintendo is rolling in dough by making games for everybody. That's just how Nintendo is. If you want more gritty fare, try the 360, PS3, or PC. Plenty of stuff out there. (Although, ironically, the "Mature" games are where the kids that you're trying to separate yourself from all convene anyway.)
