Deathspank

edited July 2010 in General Chat
Hey guys, I dunno if everyone saw it yet, but Ron Gilbert finally released a trailer for Deathspank.

http://www.deathspank.com/

I watched it and umm... It looks pretty shit. I'm sure the humour will be great, as Ron's other standalone projects were really funny, Spy Fox 1,2 and 3 were awesome. But they were adventure games.

Deathspank looks really low budget, and combat looks like nothing special. I know they are an indy company, but most indy projects stick to 2D and normally have gorgeous graphics, like World of Goo or Aquaria. This, well, it just looks awful.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but this trailer was kind of a let down.

What do you guys think?

    I respectfully disagree, good sir.

What did you think of the trailer?

    Probably this.

I disagree. The graphics are top notch. It reminds me of a happy flappy combination of semi-cell-shaded 2d-artwork onto a 3d world with 3d characters. It has a really unique atmosphere borrowing things from Psychonauts, Zelda: The Wind Waker & Diablo's one-man birdview approach.

The trailer could have used a bit more in-game storytelling instead of focussing on hack and slash. I'm excited, I just hope the gameplay will be as enticing as I think it will be..

I think its going to be great.

It looks like a Diablo parody :)

Diablo games are becoming increasingly silly, so they deserve it.

I have never played a Diablo game

The curved visual perspective is nice, I think the style would work well for Zelda games also

I thought it was cute.. :)

And the music of the trailer is awesome :D

I really liked it. I thought the graphics were very deliberately stylized myself.

I think it looks brilliant, I'm not 100% convinced by the gameplay yet but they haven't shown the adventure aspect.

Well, apparently it's a combination of an action game and an adventure game... so I guess you can lose life, which is not that usual in Ron Gilbert's game, is it?

Yeah, who wants to be totally annihilated?

Hopefully they're saving it for a theatrical trailer. I can see that being pretty funny.

It looks like Diablo meets Munchkin.

It looks like it might finally be the RPG for me. Great art, no random battles, it being completely light-hearted and with fun and funny dialogue (very SMIish). All this accessorising and over the top violence makes it that much funnier.

    "Formerly Sally the Stable Girl."

I really like the art style of Deathspank, and im very hard to please, the little things like the effects of the backround give real dept, and that conversation with the old man... thats the original monkey island humor i remember and love

This video really made me want to play the game.

I saw the demo at PAX (a few times actually) and combined with the questions I asked, I am very impressed with the game. The stylized art really does it for me, screenshots don't do this game justice at all.

I like the art style they chose to use.

Yeah the graphics look totally unrealistic and everything!

(we need an emote that would help to exemplify sarcasm)

I managed to find a bigger video on gamespot that showed off the graphics a bit more, and it looks way better than that tiny video and the screenshots.

I don't know how gameplay will work, but it looks promising. I didn't know this was on consoles, I'll probably get it for PS3 just cos of controls, Console games don't work on PC super well.

Love the colors, can't wait to play it

Mix N Mojo has a few links to previews of the game and interviews with Ron Gilbert. It looks interesting, I'll keep an eye on this game.

I've been a bit sketchy on this art style. When I first saw it I liked it but started liking it less and less the more I saw of it. Now I like it again.

I've been pretty interested in this game but am a bit iffy about the Diablo aspect--cause I've played Diablo, and after a certain point spent most of my time dying because I didn't have the will to grind my way up a few more levels.

But I like this picture, and Sally the Stablegirl, so I will reserve judgment for later.

I'm just disappointed that it's not coming to PC.

One or two previews do mention a PC release. Also, this post on the DeathSpank blog seems to hint at a PC release too.

Ah okay, that makes me feel a little better. I would hate to think that Ron would abandon his loyal PC fanbase.

Release date, price announced. Day one purchase for me.
  • edited June 2010
From what i've seen so far a great game but as there is no WIN/OSX version yet, meh.
  • edited June 2010
I really dig the price, though, and like being able to play Sparkles the Wizard in coop :D
  • edited June 2010
If it comes out on PC/Mac, I'm totally getting this.
  • edited June 2010
Nah, for me this is going to be a perfect game to be played on the PS3.
  • edited June 2010
Me too.... I will buy it for PS3... and like the Monkey Island games I will probably buy it on both PC (if it comes out on PC) and PS3.... so I can play it where ever I feel like playing it.

I will be on vacation in Florida around the time it comes out though... So it will have to wait for when I return... I will be playing MI2 on my laptop on the plane ride though.

Why PS3 over Xbox 360? I've been thinking of getting a 360 now that it no longer gives a jet plane impersonation when it's on and because Alan Wake looks like fun. Is there a reason you think Deathspank wouldn't work as well for that console?
