Nah, didn't do it for me. Graphics reminded me of World of Goo, but I was kinda put off.

It looks really depressing, and although it looks cool it appears it's gonna be one of those games that are light on story, but heavy on symbolism. The whole time I would be playing that, I would be analysing all the parts of it and working out what meant what, and I'm sorry but that art is extremely depressing. I'd just feel crap playing it.

I'm gonna wait for reviews, but it looks like a pass for me, just cos of the art direction and the music in the video.

And the puzzles look pretty easy, but I don't think there'll be a goal in this game. Just exploration and symbolism.

It looks awesome. Very nifty, I love all the details. The art is just amazing.

But shouldn't this topic be in General Discussion?

Edit: Man, does anyone know if that's a blend of 2D and 3D, or just purely 2D?

yah i suppose it should.....How do i go about moving it there?

Amanita have been around for a while..their games always have good graphics.
This one was first previewed in 2007.

The puzzles are good, but their previous games have never been too difficult...just really nice games to play, but they have all been free flash games...not games available for purchase, so maybe this is a whole different kettle of fish.

Try out their previous games: Samorost I and II are the most well known..you will get an idea of their quality :)

Yes, beautiful! I've been looking forward to this title for quite some time.

I wouldn't want to play this.
    It looks depressing.
The Atmosphere reminds me of Full Pipe. I don't know why it does. But I really hated Full Pipe. Thank god there was a demo for Full Pipe so I did not accidentely buy it.

Thank you very much for informing me of this, jhuddy! I will check it out eventually. :)

I love it. I'm a huge fan of the Silent Hill series and this reminds me of those games. The atmosphere is perfect for my taste. It would've worked if it would've been even darker.

That's my opinion :) Can't wait for the game. When is it going to be released?

I think this fall sometimes, but thats what I heard at Pax.

I agree. But I don't know what Full Pipe is.

World of Goo was pure awesome, but I didn't like the depressing bits, I just liked the music and gameplay. Stuff that tries to be too symbolic and depressing normally ruins it, and the gameplay in this looks bleh.

Let's wait for a review, but I don't think it will be any good.

    Thread moved for you. :)

I'm starting to get really annoyed by the attitude that things that aren't all rainbows and sunshine along gumdrop lane are suddenly bad. Especially in the case of things like World of Goo and Machinarium, which seem to take it in such a lighthearted and amazingly stylistic way that it's so hard not to fall in love with the world presented to us.

Things don't always have to be an upbeat, slapstick comedy to be entertaining.

It looks beautiful but I think the lack of dialogue will put me off.

Nah, they don't. But this looks pretty depressing, and I like a bit of hope in a story. That being said, I really enjoyed Corpse Bride etc, but I think alot of these things are too artistic and symbolic for their own good.

    Let's wait for a review.

I really hope it comes together well. The art style is FREAKING AMAZING.

    And depressing...

Reminds me of a book thing you had to do for the basic skills test in year 3, it was called The Thing, and it looked exactly the same as this.

We need more depressing adventures. More serious adventures. Or at least less comedic adventures. They're fun and all but there's too much of them. We need variety.
  • edited September 2009
Yeah, more adventure games would be good, but most of them stuff it up.

    Broken Sword for example...

Amanita's games have real heart. I urge anyone who thinks Machinarium will be "depressing" to check out Amanita's past work. I think you will find the atmosphere in these simple flash games, whlle often dark and trippy, is also full of whimsy and humor. Admittedly, Machinarium looks a little more melancholy than Samarost or Questionaut, but I think those with an open mind will find something uniquely engaging and possibly quite moving here.

    My thoughts exactly :)

...and to Fury, what was wrong with Broken Sword?

It was awful! I only played BS3 - Shadow of the Templars, and admittedly, I got it cos George Stobbart was a Guybrush Ripoff. If Guybrush wasn't a pirate, he would look like George. He wouldn't be a tool though, and he wouldn't get unexplained superpowers halfway through the game.

The puzzles were awful and half of them didn't make sense, the climbing bits were awful, dialogue wasn't funny, quick time events in cutscenes..., bad voice acting, bleh graphics (cept the opening was nice for it's time) and the stealth. Errrrrrr. Don't get me started on the stealth. I forced myself to get up to that damned castle, then gave up. I think I was close to the end too.

But it was awful! First non-scumm adventure game I played, and also the last. (cept for teltale). Taught me that any adventure game not made by Lucasarts is shit. Unless it's Telltale. But that's a recent rule.

    Just played Samorost.

If that's what's Machinaquarium is like, I don't want any part of it. It's just mindless clicking, it's kinda fun but I prefer direction with puzzles. Those sort of flash games are ok, but they don't get me.

If the puzzles are clearer in M, then yeah, I'll give it a shot. But I'm gonna wait until reviews are out.

I've only played the first game, but it was awesome! Apparently the third is the worst in the series.

Please play the first one. It's brilliant. Everything after that was more and more disappointing as the series went on.

Wow. No non-SCUMM games. That...that cuts out a lot of amazing adventures.

I mean, I think the fact that the majority of adventure gamers haven't ever played an Infocom game is a tragedy, but NOTHING other than LucasArts? That's...really sad.

Ditto to the above two posts.
Please don't base the entire Broken Sword series off that one game. The Sleeping Dragon wasn't one of my favourite games, in fact I felt quite let down by it.
Like the others have said, play the first game at least..GREAT puzzles.

As for Samorost..it's not just about the game play, but the visual experience too..it's just a nice game to look at and interact with, it's not meant to be an in depth, will keep you entertained for days, kind of game :)

I doubt Machinarium will play the same. The time it has taken to develop, I'm pretty sure it will have at least, a little more depth.
Don't write it off before you tried it ;)

I tried the game and oddly enough my Toaster is powerful enough to run the game.
But I really didn't like the gameplay. everything felt slow.
The graphics are detailed but I don't like them much. But I am amazed how much work was put into the visuals of the surroundings. But you are still left with some more or less ugly mousepointers that don't fit into the game too well.

Broken Sword > Broken Sword 2 > Broken Sword 4 > Broken Sword 3, but I still liked Broken Sword 3 far more than any Sierra adventure game ever created.

Looks good! It seems really interesting, and the graphics and character designs are lovely. I'm definitely interested in this one, but might leave it a while before buying it. I have so many adventure games to be getting on with at the moment, but I'll keep this game in mind.

Thanks for posting the link, jhuddy! :)
