Chapter 3 (Don't read if you haven't played)

Well, I just finished chapter 3 and... well... my feelings for it were very mixed. I'll just list what I thought was 'good' and what was 'bad' about it. NOTE: You really don't have to agree with me.

The Good

-Murray! What else can I say? Brilliant way to bring him back!
-Very good laugh out loud moments, and plenty of them.
-Puzzle with Morgan as the fake wife. Nuff said.
-Great sound/graphics. Seems to be less character reuse, at least better disguises to the reused models

On the other hand...

-Puzzles are much harder than the previous episode. Often have whacked out, crazy, and round-a-bout solutions that confused me. Had me almost looking up a freaking walkthrough in the first twenty minutes. Hint system is better than in TMI2 but not much.

-I just didn't like the relationship with Morgan and Guybrush in this one. Last month she thought he was a swashbuckling hero who was witty and brave, this month she regards him as a total wuss. The whole fangirl thing really made her character more likable for me, and now...?

I think that their relationship made a very realistic one. Morgan never met Guybrush before, only heard tales of his many accomplishments, but not how he achieved them. She assumed he did it though pure skill and attitude, but she learns here that it's not the case. He does it through negotiation and wit. That's why she lost respect, but she eventually sees how he still gets the job done and begins to really fall for him romantically instead of just having a crush on him.

The only problem in this chapter for me was the cliffhanger, it's essentially the same as chapter 1 with Morgan holding them hostage, but we know who she is now. I was hoping for something with LeChuck or Elaine. Other than that, great episode, best so far for me.

I agree with darknessofheart on the relationship. It made sense to me. Morgan never met Guybrush in person before. She built him up in her mind as a specific type of person and was disappointed that he was not exactly what she expected at first.

Strangely enough, I thought this episode was easier than the previous ones. Maybe it's because I always disable hints and maybe the hints in the previous episodes are more obvious? No idea why I'd have exactly the opposite impression.

My only complaint is that this episode seemed to be very short. I was a little disappointed to finish within a couple hours with only a total of about 4 small areas (The Screaming Narwhal, upper inner manatee, lower inner manatee, undersea).

I wanted to press the hex button with the severed finger, it wouldn't let me :<

I loved it, still hoping that Guybrush and Morgan end up together.

Nothing against Elaine, just time for Guybrush to mix it up a little.

I second everything Bloodshed said. I'm not too upset about the easier puzzles, its more of a good thing than bad, because in the first two episodes it usually was something silly that held me up from completing a puzzle. (not noticing a bucket and wandering for several hours, etc.) This ones puzzles were perfect, they required just the right amount of thought from me - but because of that i drove through the episode faster than the last two. I think id rather have it this way then inflate gameplay time with a hollow experience.

    Also, Murray.

I thought all the puzzles were logical (MI-logical, at least).

I actually needed more help in episode 2 to be honest, episode 3 I only got stuck two times for a short while but everything made sense and was fun, brilliant chapter. A negative would have to be the lack of new music! compared to episode 1 and 2, music is lacking in episode 3 which is understandable though considering the locations.
  • edited September 2009
I didn't find the game harder than the previous ones. In fact, I only got stuck for a couple of minutes at a time and on a couple of occasions I feel almost like I stumbled on the solution by accident before getting the chance to figure it out - but I still thought the puzzles in this chapter were of excellent quality, the most consistently good that Telltale have ever done.

As for Morgan, I think you missed the point - the idea was that when she saw Guybrush at work it wasn't quite how she expected it - he's hardly the smoothest of operators, after all - but then by the end she realises he gets the job done against all odds, and is back to being a fan again.

the puzzles were great. just hard/easy enough, and all very logical by MI-standards. I agree with those who said this has been the best episode to date. I laughed more in this one, and never got completely stuck as in the previous ones. When I got stuck in this ep I just had to go a little further in my mind, and there it was. I had to go a little further for every puzzle, and the line of thought was never broken. It was very well balanced. Can't stop writing about it :)
About the music, did any one else get annoyed by the tune playing while you sink to the sea switch as soon as you hit the bottom? I liked the first one better. I think it was the Largo from MI2 (thought it could have been merely a resemblance) Any one else noticed this?

I thought it was the Kate Capsize Music sting?

I thought it was the Kate Capsize Music sting?

The music as you fall to the bottom is indeed the music from Kate Capsize's boat - you also hear this when falling from Skull Island in Curse of Monkey Island.

At the bottom of the sea, the music is a variation on the bridge section of the captain kate music which you hear while standing on the bottom of the ocean (one of my favourite bits of MI music). This is also heard when you open the umbrella on Skull Island in CMI and there's also a version of this bit during a brief moment underwater in Escape from Monkey Island.

Ever since I saw that this episode might partially take place underwater, I was hoping I might hear this bit of music, and I geeked out when it happened.

I dunno... I actually thought the harder puzzles were a good thing. The only place I actually got stuck was when I didn't realize that the hook could be used with Murray's chest(I remember trying it before, and Guybrush said no. I don't know why that happened), and when I couldn't see De Cava's monocular.
But otherwise, I actually liked the fact that I got stuck. One of the best points of MI2 was that it was the hardest, remember?

I didn't hate Morgan, but I didn't like her either. I thought it'd be interesting considering the last episode, but it wasn't as much as I expected.

But otherwise, I'd say it's the best episode yet.

Move the Negatives into the Positives section, and you have my point of view. Everything expressed as a negative in this review is a positive as far as I'm concerned.

I found the puzzles in this one easier and more logical than the last two, but then my mind is pretty twisted. :D
  • edited September 2009
I'm surprised you thought this one was harder, personally there was a lot of moments in Chapter 2 that took me a very long time to figure out, I even had to check the hints board once or twice for a push in the right direction. But with this one, I pretty much breezed my way through, the only thing that took me any amount of time was finding one of the expressions (on the painting).

But that being said, I still found this one a lot more enjoyable. The puzzles were much more logical, and as you said there were a lot of very funny moments. I really enjoyed the Face Off puzzle and communicating with the manatee's. Once again it felt like a good call back to the older games, without directly copying them.

The only time I actually found this to be true was the puzzle involving the glasses because I never noticed that he actually put them down and they could be picked up (I think this should have maybe been made a bit more obvious). I had to look up a hint for that one (luckly *just* a hint, once I found out I had to do something with those glasses I was able to figure out the rest).

The rest of the puzzles were very clever in my opinion. They felt a lot "smarter" than previous puzzles. I particularly enjoyed the ones involving (spoilers coming, the thread title warns you already so I'm not marking them):
-Getting Morgan to go on a date
-The Locket (*great* puzzle!) and Voodoo Lady stuff
-Sea Manatee language puzzle (I loved all the generic "How do I get to the library?" type phrases :D)

The puzzles were fantastic in it, however I didn't find them all that too challenging. They were diverse though, and there wasn't a forest in sight!
The characters were good, and there was good parts of dialogue.
Murray was a big plus, great to hear his voice again, and class humour. And he made watching the credits entertaining, in a Whose Line is it Anyway style.

Was a bit short though, and having completed it means I will have to wait for quite some time for the next installment...

I laughed when Guybrush went Voodoo Lady! Hehe! :D

Great game! Perhaps the best chapter so far!

.. and Murray in the end text! :D :D

As someone else stated, I'd add the negatives to the positive side and actually just leave the negative out as I see this as close to perfection as possible.

Same :) I was glad we were able to work it in. The diving/underwater theme is one of my favorite pieces of Monkey Island music. We probably spent more time than necessary getting the full-on homage to Monkey 2's ship diving sequence in, but it was hard to resist doing.

It was worth it. Oh, it was so worth it. Thanks for actually doing it, you guys.

call me a genius, but it's easy (or exactly hard enough). haven't been really stuck one single time.

    The game is great!

    Loved Chapter 3 completely.

Loved Murray (his look and dialogue were bang on - felt like exactly the same Murray from Curse), loved the throwback diving sequence (with music), loved the tarot card puzzle, loved the new characters, loved the characterisation and plot development, loved the Manitee conversation (did anyone else think about the love conversation between Guybrush and Elaine from MI2 while playing this?), loved the face off puzzle and loved the locations.

This, in my opinion, is the best chapter so far (and that's saying something). Yes, its quite easy, yes, its quite short and yes, there was no BIG cliffhanger. But these aren't faults. Tales of Monkey Island is an episodic game and there's no need to be disapointed - there is much more to come.

I'm so glad Telltale are moving the game in new, exciting and fun ways. The writing has been superb and its great to be able to believe in these characters again.

Murray is definately a huge highlight. If there is a second season, I hope they will wait untill then to use him again as I would hate to see him overused. But then again, the way that Telltale have dealt with him, I would probably be extremely happy to see him return every month!

Big thumbs up from me. I am really looking forward to the next chapter.

    Just finished it.

Chapter three was lightyears ahead of chapter two, and quite a bit better then chapter one.

    -Puzzles were fun and logical
-Almost all secondary characters *had* character(the chief failing of the second game, with the first only saved by de singe), there was obvious work put in to differentiate the stock ttg character models, and they had interesting personalities.
    -Voices felt nice and clear
-It was funny throughout(the second was not, and the first struggled towards the end)
-Murray had his best outing yet
-Set piece puzzles were great (gurning, voodoo lady & manatee travel dictionary)

All in all, fantastic. If the final two games are of this quality I'll be very happy.

i think Episode 3 was quite satisfactory(*cough*manatee), at least the levels and puzzle were 'less jungle' and more innovative.

The shot of Guybrush opening the chest that Murray is in was amazing.

The. Best. Chapter. So. Far. I love it! The puzzles - it took me way more time to figure some things. On the other hand they were brilliant! The whole thing with the dialogue with the female manatee, the thing with the locket, the game with the faces, the attempt to join the brotherhood...I can't even mention everything that I liked in that game! And I particularly loved the sound when the fish played that musical instrument. :D

It was awesome that you guys did this! :) and all the cheese squigglies.....and the monocle.... best episode ever! (for more reasons than all the MI2 references of course though)

This is something I thought as well. As much as I loved Murry in this episode, I wouldn't want to see him come back to soon. So far they've been good with not simply shoe-horning characters in for the sake of having them in, so hopefully they keep that up.

    Really?!?

I still found this episode ridiculously easy (especially compared to Monkey Island 1, 2, and 3), but even compared to past Tellate games (some episodes in Sam and Max: Season 2).

(That's not the say the puzzles weren't fun--much funner than some previous episodes--and logical).

Anyway, 3 was definitely the best episode yet.

Are u kidding me? Dificult??? c´mon!

I just completed the game in less than 3 hours, with Hints off, and trying to talk with everyone and everything...

The "Harder" one, for me, was the first...

    Dificcult Rating:
    ToMI01:38/100
    ToMI02:22/100
    ToMI03:28/100
    SOMI:68/100
    MILR:81/100
    COMI:78/100
    EFMI:47/100

I dont know if im getting smarter, or the games r getting easyer... But the "puzzles" are actually very obyusly... Take head from Santino, distract guy, slash head. Old Painting... Use corrosive yellow liquid to see obviusly needed face for Face combat... Duct "tapped", use corrosive yellow liquid, to solve it... Need to learn manatii, use picture in decavas picturo and press button... What was hard????

I think this episode is a real breakthrough in puzzle design - it actually had more conversation / action puzzles than the usual "try-and-figure-out-how-that-item-fits-where" routine. Loved the cages puzzle, absolutely adored the face-off puzzle (also the reprise - that nun was soooooo hot :D ), and also loved the manatee wooing, although that one took me a lot of time. One thing to note, LotL was a bit easier than the first two games, but it was still OK for me.
The music was done very tastefully, it usually nicely bended into the background, but if you pay attention, there are a lot of good tunes to discover. The voice acting was also first class (special thanks to Morgan and Bugeye), and I've always liked the graphics. The humour seemed to be flowing constantly probably courtesy of the characters, but I kept smiling as I played.

All in all, Lair of the Leviathan is easily my favourite piece of the ToMI series - it may be one of the best games Telltale ever released. I'll replay it like a week later, and see how it holds up. Until then, great job, and I wonder what else is in store!

I liked chapter 3 very much, but then again I liked this whole series so far. Some of the Puzzles took me awhile and I was glad there was a hint system. But Managed to beat it without going online for a walkthrough once.Story was good too I just wonder how they're going to wrap it up in 5 chapters? The Manatee Mating reminded me of insult swordfighting.
My one complaint I guess with chapter 3 is we had one short cutscene with Lechuck and Elaine. I really wanted more clues to what they were doing....
  • edited October 2009
I enjoyed chapter 3, but I must say that I am surprised anyone found it hard. I am not a very experienced adventure-player, but I found it much easier than the previous 2 parts. Except for a bit of trying until I won the facial expression-contest some fiddling with the tarot cards to get the book, and giving the female manatee the correct answers it all went extremely smoothly for me. Of course this may very well be just a matter of your form the day you play it.
One reason for it being easier for me is that the objects were all very obvious; I didn´t have to search for anything. It was the only of the three episodes so far where I never looked into a walkthrough.

Overall it is another very good episode, and for me only slightly inferior to the second; I had a few more laughs there, and it seemed a bit longer.
  • edited October 2009
Loved this episode! The characters were terrific, and the writing was very funny as always.
The puzzles were the easiest so far for me, but also my favorite. They were quirky and fun, but also had a logical solution. I love all the the extra care and details that's been put into it. This has been my favorite episode yet. I'm really looking forward to seeing the last two episodes.

I think Morgan still does have a fangirl crush on Guybrush.... But since he is all about Elaine she is acting like she doesn't as a defense mechanism.
