Need advice on video compressor program

edited November 2009 in General Chat
Hey guys,

I used to use Dr. DivX. Best program ever. One big problem: Doesn't work on Vista and Windows 7. I've checked forums and everything, everybody says that you can make it work but there are complications, it crashes...basic idea - it doesn't work on my OS, W7.
Sooo, what's the next best thing? Price doesn't matter, compatibility does. Also, I'm sometimes working with 4:3 which then I need to convert to 16:9. The compressor should have this option, as Dr. DivX had. If I can also choose the actual size of the output video, it would be even better.

Help? Please? :D

Does VirtualDub have the features you need? It's free and open source, and there are many developers of filters out there as well.

I'd suggest Gordian Knot, but since it was apparently discontinued years ago you might have trouble getting it to work. It was a very nice open source video coding suite with many many options and providing a frontend to various useful open source programs including VirtualDubMod.
There's apparently a successor called AutoGK, but I have no idea whether it will work or suit your needs.

Virtual Dub is great for encoding videos, I use that a lot.

Don't know about the aspect ratio thing, though... I've never had to do that.

VirtualDubMoD (an enhanced version of VirtualDub) for everything encoding. Donno what's the issue with win7 and divx, but if Xvid or AVC\H264 works there, then that should do it. as for resolution, there are video filters a plenty. :P

What editor do you use? Most major non-linear editors have pretty adequate export options, though the only one I'm actually familiar with is Adobe Premiere.

I'm using Sony Vegas 9.0. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the "size limit" option. That's why Dr.DivX was perfect.

I only use iMovie, but it's got all the features I need. Upgrading to Final Cut Express wouldn't really do much for me.

For an excellent video compressor, get MPEG Streamclip. It's free, and available for OS X and Windows. You can export in just about every format imaginable, and even download from Youtube! I swear by it!
