    No reason to panic.

    Not vista this time?
Make sure that your hard drive is visible in the BIOS or POST.

If it is a S-ATA drive you will have to point XP to the S-ATA drivers of your mainboard.

i just changed the hard drive from RAID to the other one, I-something, and it installed. Now i just need to know how to install SATA drivers and make my internet work.

Also, I can confirm Sam & Max now work!

Hi there. Please list the things you already tried and give us the dxdiag info:

Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Now you have two options to make it accessible to us. Pick the one that works best for you:
    1. If you know how, you can zip the file and attach it to a message.
    2. You can upload it to Rapidshare and copy the link to the file into a new message.

this is the file could you check it out

Please install the latest DirectX. Looks like yours is quite old and that should fix the problem.

You might also want to install the latest Sound drivers.

Please help me! I purched ToMI at PAX 2010 booth and now I'm getting this!
    ******************************************
    * Could not initialize Direct3D *
    * Make sure you have current video drivers and *
    * close any other applications that might be running. *
    ******************************************
...is the error I keep receiving when I am on my laptop and I try to start the Tales of Monkey Island. I have no other programs running at the time and in fact, I have rebooted several times and reloaded the updated drivers for my display card 2x now. I see that Direct3D is enabled on the card (at lease the acceleration is, so that should be okay.) I have not yet tried to install this on my desktop yet, only because I have not gotten home yet from PAX! System specs below. DXdiag results, up to "DISPLAY" since it seems I am having a display issue. This is not an integrated card. I upgraded this graphics card upon purchase of the system. I've done everything I can think of, and now I am just flat stuck!

So, something that I also noticed.
Episodes 2-5 do not have the same Direct3D failure,
but all of them crash -- HARD!!!

Picture of the error is below.

Just downloaded the Adventure Bundle, and am getting the classic "The program can't start because d3dx9_41.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." error. I have a Shuttle SG31 running an Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS accelerator card, and have DirectX 11 installed on Windows 7 64-bit. dxdiag reports both 32 and 64-bit versions of DirectX 11 are working fine.

Guys, it's 2010. Should we not be past this by now?

Did you run the DirectX Updater lately?
The game is not asking for DirectX 11, but for a DirectX 9 component. Sadly Windows 7 doesn't ship with all previous DirectX versions up to date.

Thanks for the tip, but oy. We. should. be. past. this. by. now.

The PC platform is decades old. Things should just WORK.

    Again, thanks.

I'm now downloading the games in the bundle. Thanks again, particularly for posting the link right to the updater!

So this is directed a little bit less at Telltale and a whole lot more at Microsoft (okay, so maybe they don't browse these forums, but still): Make DirectX work more smoothly, dagnabbit! It's not an <expletive deleted> standard if it never works the same way twice! Users shouldn't have to kludge here, download there, and install this, that, and the other to "try to make things work." THEY SHOULD JUST WORK already! People buy consoles for just that reason: as a rule, things JUST WORK.

Perching to the choir. (Note: That link is of my own personal meandering thoughts and do not reflect the views of Telltale.)

    hey there

I was also getting this "Could not initialize Direct3D" error message whilst running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit with the most recent AMD drivers. After doing some more experimenting, ending all programs that might have caused errors and such I found out an attached USB-Monitor with its current DisplayLink-drivers caused this error.

The error occured with "The Penal Zone" for the first time - not with any of the episodes before. Guess there's something wrong with the graphic engine. Maybe it doesn't like multi-monitor-solutions.

This should be taken in regard though

Make sure your display color depth is set to 32 bit, and that you have run the DirectX updater.

If that fails please post a dxdiag log.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Then zip the file and attach it to a reply in this Thread.

Oh well, that doesn't look promising:
Display Tab 1: Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 9 is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.

    Card name: SiS 650_651_740
    Driver Date/Size: 7/18/2002 14:18:56, 334848 bytes

    Description: YAMAHA AC-XG WDM Audio
    Date and Size: 7/19/2002 12:25:58, 202880 bytes

That's some pretty old hardware with old drivers.
It might start, if you update the drivers, but it would sure run horrible on that integrated graphics chip.
If you want to give it a try, here you'll find the latest, but still old, graphics drivers and sound drivers.

Unless you want to upgrade or replace the system you're better off playing on the laptop.

If you want to give it a try, here you'll find the latest, but still old, graphics drivers and sound drivers.

Unless you want to upgrade or replace the system you're better off playing on the laptop.

You follow one of the links, then you have to agree to SIS Terms of Service. Once you've done that you'll see a Page where you can select what to download. Ignore that. Instead follow both links again, this time you should see the files to download. You'll have to input a captcha (Type the code shown) before you can start downloading.
Then you unzip the files, and install the drivers.

It's probably a lost cause anyway with that legacy hardware. I would not waste too much time trying to get it to work on that PC, unless you know what to do.

One thing came to my mind though.
Did you actually extract the zip files before you started the drivers setup?
There are those "Zip folders" too in some Windows versions, which might cause problems with only the executable being extracted, not finding the other files. Just a wild guess though.

    What about the graphics driver?

My game has an error message that says:
"Could not initialize Direct3D. Make sure you have current video drivers and close any other applications that might be running. You will need a video card that supports Pixel Shader 1.4."

My video card supports PS 3.0, and I can't run the game properly.
Every time I start the game, there goes that error message of death.

I really want to play the game and I'm also an avid fan of BTTF....

Is your display color depth set to 32-bit?
Do you have multiple displays activated?

Otherwise, please post a dxdiag log as described above.
