Which supporting character(s) would you like to come back after Tales?

    Bring back DeSinge!
He could have discovered the secret of immortality, but it had to result in death (live as a ghost/zombie scientist). Or he didn't anticipate death and comes back because of discoveries as a ghost.

That'd be awesome as "you can't stop science!"

Yeah, DeSinge was really cool. One the one side, I'd love to see him return, on the other side it would kind of de-awesomize his death.

Maybe he could come back as some kind of horrible sentient mist that constantly whispers in a thousand tiny French voices.

....orrrrr maybe that's getting a bit dark.

How about instead of DeSinge returning, we should have Largo LeGrande return, but voiced by Jared Emerson Johnson. :D

But DeSinge isn't French. He has a French accent, speaks French a lot of the time and has a French name, but he's not French. Says he.

I know he isn't French, (even though he recognises King Louis as his monarch) but he does have a French accent, hence the tiny whispering French voices.
  • edited February 2010
My theory (a pretty obvious one at that) is that he's crazy.

But yeah, thousands of voices whispering with a French accent would be interesting and possibly scary and funny at the same time.
Still, I don't see him returning.

Breaking news, a female character in a video game has breasts! Film at 11.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Morgan has a particularly huge rack as far as cartoon boobs go, she just happens to show a bit more cleavage than most. It's probably a distraction technique.

Really, to me it looks as if Morgan's bust is pretty comparable in size to Elaine's. Elaine just doesn't show any cleavage until chapter 5, and when she does it's not as much.
  • edited February 2010
How about we just bring Morgan's bust back in the next game, and see if anyone notices that her wonderfully developed personality is missing?

It's nonexistent. Read my post on the previous page. I compared Morgan to several well endowed cartoon characters, and Morgan came out pretty lacking in that area. But hey, it's a good thing we like her for more than just her looks, eh? :D

I'm just saying, just because she doesn't have huge breasts doesn't mean she's not hot. Not that I care, I prefer them flat, square and hairy, but you know... She IS very attractive the way she is.

The theme of finding cartoon characters hot is a little... creepy shall I say.

But I am prone to think they're not really cartoons as they don't follow the "four fingers on hands" rule. Or that's just my tiny excuse of not trying to find Morgan attractive (which she apparently is).

Btw, De Singe's not French. He's Burgundian =)

Well, sure, when you compare to Matsumoto and Jessica Rabbit, just about any character is going to come out looking flat.

She's a cartoon. As far as looking good, sure I guess, but what I meant was that she has more going for her than just her physical appearance. Her personality is solid, likable, and downright cute, and it makes up 90% of what makes her character attractive in any form. I never see any comments about her looks as more than just harmless jokes. Because she's a bloody drawing.

The point I was making wasn't that huge breasts make those characters attractive. I was trying to show Thin that Morgan doesn't fall into the category of "Her breasts gave her her fanbase" like Matsumoto or Jessica Rabbit do.

EDIT: Also I counted and the amount of times breasts or a variation of the word was used in regard to Morgan in this topic was a whopping THIRTY FIVE times. Sheesh. She'll be the one to beat Lara Croft in the perverted fanbase category.

She's evil, she's weak, she's not funny and she's ugly.

No she's not. She's a pirate hunter (essentially a mercenary) who is torn by her feelings for Guybrush, she says herself that she values her independence most, she doesn't have to be funny to be great, and she can directly compete with Elaine and Kate Capsize as the hottest female character in the MI series. For the record, if they don't bring her back I will be quite disappointed.

Really, how dare you insult Morgan like that. She's one of the best written characters of any of the games and well deserves to be a recurrent face for future installments. On a side note, any man who says that animated characters can't be physically or sexually attractive needs to get his testosterone level checked. (I'll let the women speak for themselves on this one, but from a guy's perspective if you can't look at a beautifully drawn animated woman and say she looks attractive then you're very weird indeed, my friend.)

Now, getting back on topic, I thought Bloodnose the Pirate was one of the best and funniest recurring appearances of a character in the games. I wouldn't at all mind seeing Wally return as something else equally absurd. They don't need to bring back half a dozen old characters doing the same old stuff, just as Bloodnose isn't a cartographer anymore. Although, I really would like to see Largo again, whether up to his old tricks or not.

EDIT: Ooh, and I wouldn't mind to have some pirates ransack Melee Island and restore it to it's pre-EMI glory. It would be good to see the real SCUMM Bar again.

Yes. I'll admit she's attractive as a video game character goes (and I sure as hell wouldn't mind seeing an attractive girl cosplay as her), but it wasn't until the latter half of Leviathan that I really became a Morgan fan, and it wasn't her looks that had evolved, it was her character. And I fail to see how anyone could not feel at least even a smidge of compassion for her in Pirate God.

This, but also the same with Jambalaya. I wouldn't mind seeing the aftermath of the pirates taking it back after Ozzie's downfall, especially since we never had the opportunity to see it in its naturally piratey state. Maybe we could see Casaba either imprisoned or converted to piracy (though he'd have to be terrible at it, of course)?

Morgan. Her emotional arc is fascinating to follow. I also like Anemone, Hemlock, and Bosun Krebbs, though they need to be developed a little. Show me more of them. Write out a backstory - hint at it.

I'd much rather see new, awesomely-written and well thought-out characters, though. Maybe hear a nice background story or two...

This guy is all about backstories, isnt he? Why not concentrate on the main game itself. Why do people want to see a backstory of half of the characters in Tales.

Personally I dont care about backstories that much. I havent heard people complain about the backstories of Fester Shinetop or Governor Phatt or Griswald Goodsoup or some friggin` Miss Rivers!!? MI game should focuse on Guybrush and LeChuck, Elaine and Voodoo Lady also being the main characters who should appear in every game. And of course Stan, but only in a small role.

It would be nice to see Largo again and a glimpse of the Men of Low Moral Fiber slacking in the streets. The Barber Pirates were also hilarious, but Im not sure if I want to see more of them. Not Murray this time, maybe excluding a joke or a reference but in the future, maybe.

From Tales I wouldnt bring anyone, well maybe Winslow, but that stuff with the map was definitely overrated and he should cut that to a minimum alongside with gross Anemone interracial references.
Some new characters are always welcomed, but i dont want to see a game flooded with characters, not new, not old.

However, Elaine has to be redesigned for the next MI game and the voice actress has to change. They have taken her totally to the wrong direction. In SoMI Elaine was mature, calm and friendly. Now shes just annoying and impatient as hell and looks like a young and spoiled brat. Her voice in Tales is also a horrible mixture of nagging and screeching. The best voice acting of Elaine might have been In CMI but in EMI she sounded also calm and gentile, and took care of her business without making a fuss out of everything, (unlike in Tales) which goes well with the image that SoMI gives of her.

I know this is just speculation for fun, but has any of you considered that this "involving characters from two-four games prior to Tales" might totally confuse MI newbies?

This is a thing I worry about actually. I remember Dave Grossmann in that interview from last year explaining that they left a gap between EMI and Tales and created a fresh story without too many references to the previous games, so that MI newcomers would also have a chance to enjoy a game which entire plot they can follow from chapter 1 - 5 without the feeling of having missed something.

The "LeChuck-chases-Guybrush" and "LeChuck-after-Elaine" business was cleverly diverted from by the introduction of Morgan and the convincing "good guy" act of LeChuck, before in the end, the obligatory showdown takes place anyway (however, due to the fresh plot, it didn't feel all that repetitive).

So Tales has done a lot of character insight work, included background stories, especially to the Voodoo Lady, and now leaves us at a starting point at which so many questions still require an answer, but to understand those, it will be crucial to have at least played through TOMI. If they were now to bring back characters from MI2 or EMI, wouldn't that make things a little complicated for people not as MI obsessed as we are (I heard that that kind of people actually exist)?

To keep the story interesting for us die hard fans and to make it become deeper, TTG should/must continue the character background story - thing and, yes, I would even trust them with a "Herman-is-really-Elaine's-grandpa" sort of twist without ruining the story, but that would mean newcomers would feel lost.

On the other hand, they might continue with creating new plots that don't start off from the ending point of the previous game, but that would be a shame since Tales doesn't really feel wrapped up yet. (Obviously, they can't get Guybrush's adventures work like Sam n Max's, where you open the closet in the office and have a brief look at tropy no. 1, 2 and 3 as token for a completed case).

Another thing I worry about when thinking about this character-interaction-focus thing: The amount and quality of puzzles might severely suffer in favor of yet another cutscene. I LOVED every single cutscene and the way they carry the story on, but I wouldn't want MI to slowly transform from a game to a movie.

Okay, this post's become longer than it was meant to be, but I really wanted that off my chest and thought this thread was a place it'd fit in. ;)

Sure it's possible to draw/paint/animate etc. image of attractive woman, but I would find it extremely weird if someone would develope romantic feelings or sexual fantasies about animated character. I don't want to offend anyone, but it's a lot easier to understand celebrity crush (which happens probably to every teenager) than obsession to female video game characters.

Finding a fictional character to be attractive is different from having romantic feelings. I was talking about the former, but yes concerning some people I've read about that want to get married to a comic book character or w/e, that is quite odd.

I suppose it's important at this point in adventure gaming to win new fans for the genre. Since the "death of adventure games" has been talked about often enough in the last decade or so, I'm sure it would be unreasonable for hardcore fans to expect newbies to pick up all the old games and have the exact game experience we had back in the day.

On the other hand, I don't want Monkey Island, especially, to become like The Legend of Zelda when it comes to the continuity between games. I guess there is a fine line between playing Twilight Princess just for it's own sake, not caring where Ocarina of Time fits into the timeline... and expecting that people should watch Empire Strikes Back before being able to appreciate Return of the Jedi properly.

I agree that I too can trust TTG with just about anything Monkey Island without ruining it, but for my own personal feelings with H.T. Marley, I'd rather it turned out that Herman is just Herman and Elaine gave the Governorship to an old smelly hermit who likes to break the fourth wall.

I can't help it, but when people start talking about boobs or hotness of female video game character, I get to my head an image of a nerd who has never seen a naked woman in RL and drools on polygons.

I admit that I have problems to understand why someone would consider that drawing could be sexy, after all it's just a picture and it does have only artistic value.

Pffew, I'm lucky I only have crushes on MALE characters :P

More seriously, I think crushes on a character are crushes on a concept. Like when you like a character in a TV series, sure they're played by an actor, but the character doesn't exist, either.
I think it's possible to have a crush, for lack of a better word, on a character, or on a game, or on a book, or on a piece of music. Because it speaks to you, it resonates inside of you. You feel like it understands you/ you understand it.

But I don't think even if you have the same type of crush as you'd do on a real person, it would necessarily be wrong or creepy as long as you know it's not real.
If you can read a love story and go "awww", or a sad story and cry, or a funny story and laugh, I think you can read/see a character and feel a connection to them. Sure they don't exist. But when you cried about something that didn't actually happened, you weren't being weird and creepy. So when you feel sympathy for someone who doesn't exist, why would you be?

I don't think it necessarily means you're a loser, either. I think having a good imagination/fantasy is part of staying sane when there are so many stressful things in real life. That's the point of playing games, reading books, and watching movies in the first place. But if when you put down the book or leave the theatre you're done, I think you're missing something.
Because the most important part, the one that makes you vibrate, is the one that lives inside of you.
Between two episodes, you wonder what will happen. Sometimes you create your own version, either in your head for yourself, or for other to see (fanfics, fanart, etc). Sometimes you dream about it. Sometimes you daydream about it. And that doesn't mean you don't have a life outside of it. If you don't it keeps you sane and helps you keep going, but if you do it's still important, I believe.

And feeling strong emotions is something one can get addicted to. Loving that book, that movie, that character. It makes you feel the same things as being in love. You know, at the very beginning. The "I'm drunk on you" kinda thing. It's easy to see how some people would cause that to happen by making themselves total fanboys/fangirls. The more you invest yourself in something, the more you're going to care about it.
Is it stupid or pathetic? I don't think so. It allows you to feel strongly about things that ultimately don't have the consequences they'd have in real life. Sure it's escapism, but in a healthy dose it's good for you.

Morgan is an interesting character. That people can be drawn to her personality, her complexity or yes, her appearance is not surprising to me. That they can feel a connection and love the character, still, doesn't surprise me. That they can have a crush... Hey, that's no more unrealistic than having a crush on a star. When it comes down to it, the star isn't "real" either, or rather, whatever the person thinks the star is isn't what they're really like. So in a way, when it's a character, you know them better.

As for her being cartoonish, well that's what imagination is for. I mean, it's like saying you can't like a character from a book, they're only made of words! But still, they have a representation in your imagination. The fact that Morgan has an official appearance really is just a guideline. She is human, therefore our brains can "convert" her to what she'd look like in real life. Everyone will probably have a different image of it, but that's what I like about it. When you're a fan, you're fan of YOUR version of the thing, which is unique to you, and a part of you, and even though other people are fans, they don't experience YOUR version, so you can always feel like it's really yours an nobody else's.

    I missed you post before.
I don't like double-posting but my previous post seemed big enough as it is, and that's a different issue anyways, so I'll answer separately.

I think it's not too big a worry. There were recurring characters in ToMI, and it was a given that Guybrush knew them. For instance Murray, that GB recognizes. I'm sure people could still play the game without it confusing them too much, since they know there were earlier games.
Similarly, Stan (and GB goes "Oh, great"). He reappears, but it's made obvious that his name is Stan from the start ("ol' Stan had to in flagrante his delicto"), and the background is given if you ask him to defend you, and he lists all the things you've done to him before.
Here you go, people who haven't played the previous games are up to date with the facts.

I think the same thing could be done with any character re-appearing. They can be reintroduced in a way that new players know that it's a character from before, but aren't lost and confused. In some cases it might just take a few lines of dialogue when the character is introduced.

So I don't think it's too much of a worry. I'd totally understand if Telltale didn't go in that direction and focused on new characters rather than bring old ones, though. But I don't think it should be an obligation.

I guess extreme things tend to seem creepy. That, or weird/different things.

I really couldn't get slash for years, even though one of my best friends is a big slasher. But she tells me the point isn't that she believes the characters are attracted to each other, the point is that she wants to see how she can take two characters who are the least likely to ever be in a relationship, and write a story that manages to keep them in character AND make it happen.
It's like a game of wits to her.

Still not my thing, but I guess it's a hobby...

I think a lot of the time people aren't in love with the character as much as they are in love with being in love. Like, they're high on it. So they just cause it and work themselves up. Just like you can be drunk without drinking if you convince yourself.
And part of it is just for fun. I think a lot of the time, seeing everyone go "uh, creepy..." is the whole point. Hence the disturbing threads and stuff like that.

Anyway, what I meant is, you're perfectly entitled to find it creepy, plus sometimes it's the point.

Still, I don't think anyone here is a total fanboy/fangirl of Morgan's in the way we're talking about. On this thread at least, it seemed more of a... er... platonic character-fan type of love :P

    Well, I hope so.

BTW I had to google that slash/slasher thing, because at first I thought that your friend was either a fan of former Guns'N'Roses guitarist or slasher movies. So I was bit confused about what you were talking about. :)

Oh, sorry. For anyone, slash and slashing is pairing two characters, usually two straights males who hate each other. It's a bit like shipping, but usually more sexual and more unrealistic.
It's called that because you put a slash between the two characters. For instance, in Monkey Island, the obvious one would be Guybrush/LeChuck.

Yes, Carla is hot, and I did think of including her when saying Morgan is one of the hottest MI women. I do personally think that SMI's Elaine is hotter than SMI's Carla though.

I think what got me is EMI. I thought of EMI's Carla, and *yeuuhh*... tbh EMI really shouldn't even be considered when comparing character hotness.

So yes, I'd say that Morgan, Elaine, Kate and Carla could each be considered for the hottest woman of MI.

Okay, the culmination is already known - LeChuck fights Guybrush, Guybrush kills LeChuck, Game ends. But those latter backstories you mentioned are the foundation for that ending.

Essentially had all the secondary characters died from the "Pox" then really that wouldn't have made much of a storyline. Guybrush would have no one to champion, and LeChuck would have lost his charm as the sinister yet loveable villain. So backstories I think are the crux of the game, without these facets the storyline would be repetetive dribble giving no integrity to the overall story.

Personally I love them, though some I'd rather forget.
As for "Goodsoup" and "Miss Rivers", they were fantastic characters.
And essential to the story I might add!
Goodsoup = way into family crypt
Miss Rivers = way to get dunce hat/win diving comp!
As for the others you mentioned I really didn't care that much.
AND MURRAY! Are you on drugs? He's an integral part of the game now, we love to know the bizarre ways he keeps popping out of nowhere (Plunder Beach, Blood crypt, Planet Threepwood, Manatee! Where will the tides of evil take him next? Or those darn voodoo kids that found him on the shore?

Furthermore I totally agree with the Elaine redesign. She was certainly irritating, her persona in CMI (whilst limited) was wonderful, she was sexy, energetic, not afraid to ACTUALLY get angry at the protagonist, and her performance overall - excuse the pun - was GOLD!

Then there was her EfMI personage.
Again, all of the above, and I did enjoy the American accent. And for the sake of semantics it really didn't bother me that much.
    The character basically had balls.

    But Tales, beg my pardon...
    She was a total harlot.
She had this weird nasal cockney going on and from the outset I loathed the character.
Even her design was flawed majorly, she seemed like a swashbuckling brat on meth.
Her attitude was skewed and randomly placed as if she was suffering menopause due to the long hiatus between EfMI and Tales.

Especially when she got angry at Guybrush, making him ask the same questions over and over, like 'what must he do' when you're on the ship in the beginning scene. And she just repeats the darn answer over and over just like a script. There was no irritation at the fact Guybrush was lame, she just camly repeated everything despite the pertinence of the situation which really didn't give the scene that authenticity it needed.

Not like the emphatic "Guybrush!!!" she used to give in CMI anyway.

Furthemore she was off swooning with LeChuck, more concerned with monkeys and apparent animal rights instead of Guybrush.

And don't get me started on her detail!
Flawed! She was unchanging, not stoic but rather girly and naiive (not a great Governor). And the hair - there was just too much subtle competition between her and Guybrush over who can use the most hair mousse/product.

I'd like to see character development in future TALES, not the same clothes, same hair for particular characters!

    *******************************************
On the main topic, that being secondary characters returning?
This, but also the same with Jambalaya. I wouldn't mind seeing the aftermath of the pirates taking it back after Ozzie's downfall, especially since we never had the opportunity to see it in its naturally piratey state. Maybe we could see Casaba either imprisoned or converted to piracy (though he'd have to be terrible at it, of course)?

I recommended this in another thread for future Tales and I totally agree.
I want to see post-Ozzie Caribbean.
I want to know whether those secondary characters and islands introduced/converted ever returned to their roots in piracy.
Will we get to revisit Jambalaya? Has it upheld its pirate free status, despite the blatant hypocrisy of 'LaFeet' and the locals esteem for him.
Will grogacino's match grog, or even the youth-raging Grog XD?
Is Casaba still continuing the curfew against pirates despite not knowing the rest of the Caribbean has returned to piracy?

And if you have read this far I congratulate you, but I don't have a dunce hat to award you with... sorry.
And to those who don't know the analogy, this is looking @Mermaid!!!

The very idea you put about new gamers and egalitarianism in gaming
is just not on. I was born 1990, only met with Monkey Island when Santa (I love you) gave me CMI for Christmas. And only in the past 2 years have I actually gone to eBay and bought SOMI and LR!
They are awesome and I'm not changing the future of gaming experience nor the analogous nature of the series, which was first introduced in SOMI, just so some 2000's born kiddy can comprehend the in-jokes.

I have nothing wrong with change, and I've been waiting for change for the past ten years. Winslow and Morgan were great, so were other notables, but in relation to the topic I agree with change in the series.

Though not without a touch of the old too. I'd certainly like to return to Monkey Island including other well known locales, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice old places and names because the gamers of tomorrow don't understand why we are going to Monkey Island, or even why it is part of the title.

Wouldn't that be incest. After all Chucky and Guybrush are brothers. :p

I liked Elaine the Pirate Princess of Tales a lot more, than I liked Elaine the Politician* of Escape. I say, more plunder, less bunny.

*While I follow politics actively in RL, I feel that politics in fiction are often boring and unfunny.

I hope that we won't see Jambalaya again, because it is my least favourite island of the entire Monkey Island -series.

You know what I think would be cool? Bringing back the Monkey Island Cannibals in a different story arc, for example, as TV show hosts or something. They would force Guybrush to do a Jackass competition to win something from them.

Other than that, I'd like to see Kate Capsize return, and while there, actually the whole Booty Island ambiance in an episode. It doesn't mean it would have to be set on Booty (though a 3D Booty would definitely be a plus), but a similar island where "party" is the form of government. And that could also serve to bring back Moose (maybe along with Bugeye, though personally I'd see Bugeye more in Largo's crew, and I think they can go separate ways) the party dude. And make Guybrush screw up his fun again =)

I get the joke, and it is funny. But there is no evidence of that, really. Guybrush did use the skull of one of the skeletons in the corridors under Dinky/Monkey Island to make a LeChuck voodoo doll, but that only proves it to be from LeChuck's ancestor, not Guybrush's. He could be mistaken, and after all, how can someone recognize their own parents just by looking at their bare skeletons?
