I do have 2 cats though. Between the two of them, my wife and I joke that we have a cat and a dog.
Between my two cats, we have one that loves eating people food; one that plays fetch; one that will lick you forever if you let it; one that greets you at the door; one that likes his belly petted...
we don't have problems with barking or peeing on the carpet though
Currently we have our black, fat, tail-less cat. His real name is Zorro, but we all just call him Fede (Danish for Fatty) and he seems ok with that. He loves to eat and annoy my mum wanting to be let in and out all the time.
We also have a stray cat called Max who lives outside, he used to be inside but then just preferred to be outside but he really wanted to be inside last Christmas but when he shat under the Christmas tree twice, his inside privileges was taken from him.
We also had 2 kittens who was following Max around, but we have seen non of them in ages.
And finally we fed a stray orange cat we called Tyson, but he has also disappeared now.
Ok I know where all this leads, I sound a lot like a cat person, and as much as I like cats I do like dogs just that little bit more.
So I love both almost equally, but just leaning a bit more towards dogs.
When I get my own place, I will buy my self a little Pug, I love those dogs.
I never liked dogs. Perhaps because I used to be a mailman and dogs HATE those.
Cats, on the other hand, are awesome. We used to have three and I've been seriously considering getting one again because they're so much fun to have around.
Dogs all the way. I find them a lot more adorable than cats, more friendlier, loyal. Cats have a demeanor about them to me that isolates you almost. I sometimes like to mock cats, which I know is cruel, but they can be freaky at times! XD
I prefer dogs, dogs are always cheerful to see you and are rarely grumpy, whereas cats just scowl at you all day and scratch your face until they get food, then they are good as gold, then resume being mean again.
on a side note, @ all the people who like cats but claim to be allergic... the most prevelent reason people are allergic to cats is because of the detergent like cleaning substance they have in their saliva... however, all cats have a slightly different saliva composition, so it's entirely possible to be allergic to one cat and not be allergic to another... if you are a cat lover, i'd definatly suggest checking this out, because you might be able to find a cat that you are NOT allergic to ^_^ for instance, my friend is highly allergic to my black and white kitteh, while he isn't the least bit allergic to my big red tabby... his mom is allergic to the big red tabby, and not allergic to the black and white kitteh...
I'm a bit more of a dog person. I like cats too, honest! To me cats are like a music teacher's mid-morning latte. To me a dog is a freind you keep and hold and will always keep give you new discoveries to be made. (Like an Adventure Game.) Though the main reason I'm a dog person is because I'm allergic to cats. Though sometimes I perer cats more because some dogs I've seen will bark randomly and ALWAYS want attenetion, which is good at the park, bad a 10:00 PM at night. I perfer the calm dogs who still have allot of energy in them. Other than that they both make great pets.

This is my experience anyway
