Your favourite game EVAR!!

...or some of your favourite games ever, it's hard to pick one I know

I'm gonna go for Super Mario Galaxy myself, because i've never played a game that had me so enchanted. Everything about the game from level design to music, control techniques mini-games EVERYTHING is just pulled off so charasmatically and well. I remember the first time fighting Bowser and when he goes into attack mode after I hit him, a massive vocal choir joins the orchestrated score just, and I grinned a massive grin.

So tell me yours people, so that we may argue and tell each other we have no taste :D

My favourite game would have to be Link's Awakening.

It was the first game that was mine (before that, games were either my parents' for Nintendo games, then my brothers' for Super Nintendo games or at best "the kids'", which included me but them too).

As a result, it's the first game that I ever played first rather than having to watch someone else play first while waiting for my turn. I also got to play it whenever I wanted since I didn't have to share it. And last but not least, it's awesome!
I actually purchased two games when I bought my gameboy, or when I convinced my parents: Link's Awakening and Mario 2, since Zelda and Mario were two series I recognised. Later I also got Mystic Quest.
It sometimes feels now that it's so hard to find good games when at the time every game I purchased was good...

Anyway, I really liked the story in that game, the gameplay with the various objects you could use but only two at a time, the fact that as you got more items you could explore more and more of the world, and the giant chain of trading. And you got to have a chomp!

It's also the first video game I ever finished, and I replayed it over and over again. I still have it of course.

Banjo-Kazooie will always have a special place in my heart. Its sequel was pretty great too, though some people don't agree.

Another favorite of mine is the Spyro the Dragon trilogy for PSX. I can't really choose between them, together they make one classic, simple, and fun platformer. (with great music) It pains me to see what they did to this franchise nowadays. It's AWFUL. :|

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is probably my favorite of the Zeldas yet. Lots of exploring, great worlds. Some people don't like it just because of the "tedious" triforce quest near the end, but except for the weird money gathering, I like it! Majora's Mask was a tough competitor with it though.

The Phoenix Wright games are more like interactive novels, but they are really great.

Paper Mario is one of my favorites too.

Other notable mentions are the Ratchet and Clank games, and the Sly Cooper trilogy. The latter is pretty overlooked, but they're actually really fun and very cleverly written.

Awwwww Links Awakening, it was my first Gameboy game and first game that was all mine too!! :D Remember taking the big dog chomp thingy through the swamps and all, and the 2D side-scroller bit? Pure brilliance!

I remember finally stealing something from the shopkeeper in that game, but then everyone called me thief :(

    Hard... very hard...

As I can't pick a favorite I'm simply going t name a few I've enjoyed very much in different genres. Fallout, Jak & Daxter 2, Civilization 2 (only with the awesome custom scenarios and mods, Red Front or 30 years war anyone?), Myth 2

I loved having the chomp, and the view change was great too! There are so many great things about this game :)

Pecan, you cheater, you named like ten games xD
(I love all of these, that I have played, though.)
By "sequel" to Banjo-Kazooie, do you mean Banjo-Tooie, or the new one where they thought "we need to make Kazooie look more like a girly girl!"?

My favouritest game evars is Half-Life, because it's the game I compare every other first person shooter to. To this day I still believe it to be one of the finest pieces of interactive entertainment ever created, and despite some pretty good attempts, no other game has come close (with the exception of HL2, which came fairly close, but not close enough!).

other favourites include Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Ristar, Metroid Prime and Sam & Max Hit the Road.

Now whilst I LURVVVE Half-Life with all of my 4 hearts, I would say that Half-Life 2 is a superior game, the story-telling's better, the action's better, the puzzles are better, it's just better!!

Though I never played Half-Life when it first came out so i don't think i'll ever fully understand the impression it made

What are you talking about? There's no game after Banjo-Tooie. Especially not a game called Nuts & Bolts, nope, doesn't exist.

    Too...many...console...players.

I think I have to go for Deus Ex, Majesty, Baldur's Gate 2 and the like.

No, it's not called Nuts and Bolts. It's called Grunty's Revenge. :D

Agreed, Nuts&Bolts is not a platform game, but a pimp-my-ride simulator. Too bad, I still remember the summer holidays when I bought the first B&K. My parents had probably never heard that much « can we go home now ? ».

Now, to my best game ever…
It’s Shenmue II. I’m a player since a long time, I was six when we first had the NES at home. So, I have a lot of very good games to remember, especially in the whole 16-bits period. But well… Shenmue II was for me an incredible experience. I was sixteen when I played it, and it changed a lot of things for me. For the first time, in a game, I was free. I was free to do, or not to do, I was free to be lost and to ask people to help me wherever, whenever. I was free to play, I was able to earn money and free to spend it in what I want, I was a stranger in a foreign country, I was lost and walking straight on was not a solution.
I’m a long time player of adventure games, and it was the first time I saw an arcade game, or at least a game looking like and feeling like an arcade game, right on my TV, letting me live a human adventure. For me, this was only possible with adventure games. Shenmue II proved me I was wrong. Really wrong.
And it has changed me. Adventure games already had some influence in me, that led me to be curious, interested in many things. But Shenmue pushed the switch definitely. At some point that I bought today plane tickets to go in Asia to learn chinese.

For those who have never played it, I, of course, recommend you to try. However, it’s an old game now, so it could look a lot less impressive than in 2001. I also recommend you the xbox version, better than the Dreamcast one, for just one reason : loadings. The Dreamcast version is insupportable because of this. GD-Roms are basically CDs, so it loads slowly. Xbox, thanks to DVD, is a lot quicker. And some people will say « yes, but the dreamcast one is in japanese, so it’s better ». Well. China is not Japan. It was true for Shenmue, but not for Shenmue II.

Anyway, just because of the epic story, of the beautiful backgrounds and landscapes, of the last chapter (where you learn to appreciate what nature is), of the chinese philosophy, and of the music, this game is something you should try if you can.

Some tracks, just to let you sense the environment of the game…
    Main theme
A location in the natural landscapes of Gulin
    Another soundtrack from Guilin’s location

If we're talking about games in general, then Warhammer Fantasy Battle is definitely my favourite, I've put more time, effort and money into Warhammer than any other hobby/fandom I've ever been involved with. Because I love Games Workshop, and Games Workshop loves me.

With video games on the other hand, it's really hard for me to pick a favourite. I've lost considerable portions of my life to The Sims 1&2, Baldur's Gate 1&2, the Pokemon series and the Fallout series. But if I absolutely had to pick a favourite, Baldur's Gate 2 would probably take it, I've lost entire weekends to that game but I can still go back to it now and find new things to do. I just wish they'd put more potential romance interests into it, because it sucks if you're playing as a female character and you don't like Keldorn.

That reminds me, I haven't installed BGII on my laptop yet...

My top four (can't pick just one) goes as such:

    1. Rise of the Triad
    2. The Neverhood
    3. Blood
    4. Silent Hill 2

I love all four games equally, so disregard the numbering.

This is actually the same feeling that gives me my favorite game, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The world was huge and unexplored, and I could go off and do whatever I wanted. I was even free to kill non-player characters, and even those who would be important to quests later on. That is real freedom, power, and consequence to me.

Firstly, Nuts 'n bolts is still a great game, it's just nothing like the first two.

Secondly, Paper Mario is the greatest game of all time in history ever.

I don't think I can name one favourite, but can narrow it down to these 5: Fallout, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, The Longest Journey and Monkey Island 2.

    Jak & Daxter 2

    Yesssssss

I would have to pick one of these.

GTA4 including TLAD and TBOGT episodes
I've been a huge fan of GTA since when I first tried GTA1 on PSX. To be honest I feel as if I have grown alongside those games my whole life. I don't really like the ones previous to GTA4 anymore simply because I have played them to death and because the things that truly loved about them consist of parodies, copypasta and generally lacks originality. I didn't realise that a lot of the ideas were taken from other movies when I was introduced to them

I was blown away with GTA4 though. I feel as if this game just did so many things right for me. There are obviously some things that you can call flaws and things that really disappointed me but I choose to ignore that and read between the lines.

    Warcraft 3: The frozen throne
I love everything this game does in terms of multiplayer. This is purely subjective though. I used to play this game very competetively back in the day :)

    Gears of war 2
Again from a multiplayer perspective. The shotgun brawls just never get old on me :D

    Well...

1- Super Mario RPG: I learn english with that
2- Kingdom Hearts: For the "exploring Disney Worlds" thing. Not the emo stuff.
3- Super Mario Bros 3 and World: Mostly because I spended days watching my dad playing and giving ideas. That were the best weekends in my whole life

Annnnnndddddddddd *shouts loudly* WII FIT! *go to hide*

Well, as far as biggest time sinks go it has to be a tie between Deadly Rooms Of Death and Trackmania.

Honorable mentions go to Star Control 2, the Unreal Tournament series and, of course, Civilization in it's several incarnations...

np: 2562 - Techno Dread (Aerial)

I'm not really all that unique, but here is my list:
    • Ocarina of Time
    • Hit the Road
    • Day of the Tentacle
    • Tetris
    • Bejeweled
    • Phantasy Star Online

    Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

    closely followed by

Secret of Monkey Island and Curse of Monkey Island

Oh for me that game is up there! I loved that GTA's grown up with me, from something pretty immature but undeniably fun into this great crime-epic. Niko Bellic's one of my favourite protagonists of all time. The expansion packs didn't have the same impact but I ploughed through them and enjoyed them. BOGT was just over the top and great fun, TLAD wasn't quite as good I thought but there's something irrepressable about rolling down an airport runway on your hog to attack some corrupt politicians plane whilst Run to the Hills is blaring from the radio.

I also wanna name drop Broken Sword, I played it when I was young and it was just a pure joy for me, my first proper adventure game I played :)

The thing about the expansion packs is that they outline the main story and continue to expand it. That's what I love the most about them. As for the over the top action, I don't mind. The missions can become a lot more interesting just by overdoing it a little bit :D

Super Mario Bros. 3 and Mega Man II on the NES. Both are beautifully crafted, offer an incredible amount of gameplay and are truly challenging.

Broken Sword, Day of the Tentacle and The Secret of Monkey Island on the Mac.

I don't own a PS3 or a PSP, but I've played the demo at Target, and it immediately inspired me.

Next to Braid, the best game I've ever played has to be-

    Little. Big. Planet.

Think about it; since when has there been such an inspiring, colorful, fun game as LittleBigPlanet? Never before has a console game given a player such ability to play, create and share. It has inspired a whole new genre of it's own and no other console game might ever compare to it.

It's one of the reasons I regret having got a DS and Wii once they came out instead of a PSP/PlayStation 3.

I remember I bought Morrowind, but I kept stealing everything everywhere, so I never really got far. Seemed quite bottomless though, I suppose it’s a huge quest :)

If I had to pick a large selection, let’s see…

    NES :
    • Kirby’s Adventure

    Super NES :
    • Uniracer
    • Killer Instinct
    • Mario Paint
    • Sim City
    • Super Mario All Star (compilation)
    • F-Zero
    • Super Mario Kart

    Nintendo 64 :
    • Conker’s Bad Fur Day
    • Banjo Kazooie
    • F-Zero X
    • Mario Kart 64
    • Super Smash Bros
    • Paper Mario

    Also, on some other systems…
Theme Park (PC), Theme Hospital (PC), Super Mario Sunshine (GC), Kung Fu Chaos (Xbox), and more recently Flower (PSN), Viva Piñata (360), Crackdown (360), Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy (Wii), Little Big Planet (PS3), Street Fighter IV (PS3)…

Then, if it comes to make a top 10 of my best adventure games :
    1. Curse of Monkey Island
    2. Broken Sword 1&2
    3. Sanitarium
    4. Normality
    5. Nightlong
    6. Day of the Tentacle
    7. Grim Fandango
    8. Sam&Max Hit the road
    9. Beneath a Steel Sky
    10. Full Throttle

It's impossible to pick just one game (most posters here seems to agree with that statement).

But I think that all the Gabriel Knight games are among the best ever.

Grim Fandango, Sanitarium, Call Of Cthulhu: DCOTE and Silent Hill 2 are also on the top of the list.

Day of the Tentacle is my all-time favourite game.

As well as adventure games (which I've spoken of many times in these forums!), I've always liked Amiga platformers such as:
-Fire and Ice: The Daring Adventures of Cool Coyote
    -James Pond (the whole series)
    -Bubba 'n' Stix
    -Benefactor
-Wiz 'n' Liz: The Frantic Wabbit Wescue
    -Bubble and Squeak

And the game I'm currently hooked on is Spore.

    1. The Secret of Monkey Island (PC)
When I first played this, I expected something incredibly lame. I went completely by the graphics.
I give Ron Gilbert's adventure game a lot of props for being able to completely blow me away
even in the summer of 2004 when I first played it. The theme song is what did it. It's been my favorite ever since.

    2. Paper Mario (N64)
My first Mario game. I will never forget the feeling of beating this game for the first time, nor Luigi leading the parade at the end. It had the cutest graphics ever, and one of the coolest and most fun storylines in a Mario game. I've beaten it enough times to call myself a true gamer.

    3. The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64)
One of the darkest, most epic, and hardest games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. I first played this many years ago on my cousins N64 and we spent a year trying to beat it. Finally my mom bought it from my aunt for me and I beat it on my own on my own N64. Then I went back and beat it again. Take that Ganondorf! And that! I love this game. But unfortunately, sometime I lost it, box and all and I have never found it since.

    4. Banjo-Tooie (N64)
On top of being one of the most engrossing games ever made, with so many collectible items and memorable characters, this game has one of the most endearing duos ever brought to a controller. Between the conscientious bear Banjo and the wise cracking bird Kazooie, they manage to scrounge up a lot of trouble. But it's all fun and absolutely a hoot, and I have fun every time I take them through the huge worlds they must traverse, from a creepy circus to a crooked mine shaft.

    5. Mario and Luigi - Superstar Saga (GBA)
When I first picked this up, I thought it was a sequel to Paper Mario. No joke. Even though it wasn't that, I wasn't disappointed. The hilarious ramblings of the plumber duo and their overcomedic adventure to recapture Princess Peach's voice is an experience I've had over six times now, and the game has still not lost it's charm. And it has the best bad guy in any Mario game ever made.
If anyone wants explanations for any of the ones after this you'll have to ask me. I'm too lazy to describe them all.

    6. Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door (GCN)

    7. Monkey Island 2 - Lechucks's Revenge (PC)

    8. Megaman Legends (PS1)

    9. Megaman Legends 2 (PS1)

    10. Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars (PC)

11: Megaman Battle Network 3 (GBA)

    12. Luigi's Mansion (GCN)

    13. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

    14. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

    15. Mother 3 (GBA)

    16. Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)

    17. The Jungle Book (GEN)

    18. Sam and Max Hit the Road (PC)

    19. Donkey Kong 64 (N64)

    20. The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past (SNES)

And as an added bonus, my top ten favorite freeware games of all time.

    1. Quest For Glory 2 VGA - Trial By Fire

    2. A Tale of Two Kingdoms

    3. The Infinity String

    4. Trilby's Notes

    5. Noitu Love and the Army of the Grinning Darns

    6. Fedora Spade

    7. Gunz - The Duel

    8. Syobon Action

    9. Guardians of Paradise

    10. Combat Arms
